Can we please put manager doubts out of the picture now? 23:00 - Nov 2 with 3435 viewsitfcsuth

We have a very good manager. A top L1 manager.

Trust him, back him. Still just 16 games with this squad.

We will be just fine with Paul Cook.

Isn't it funny there isn't any discussion around his backroom staff today?

Shouldn't be that much of a surprise. People are either happy that we won or too busy digging out others to dwell too much on our coaching staff.

To be fair Cook did what he needed to do.

There were points where 2-3 more losses would have lead to big questions.

This polarisation is tedious.

Cook had a poor start, and is now getting the kind of results we would expect.

Let's just enjoy the wins when we get them, and hope the form continues.

Quite. Why people are wedded to an 'in' or 'out' camp is beyond me. For those who've always backed Cook, then great you're slowly being proven right. For those that have questioned him, then hopefully he's starting to prove you wrong.

Results are key if we want to get out of this league, obviously. But I will also say that even when results don't quite go our way, the entertainment this year has been miles ahead of anything else we've seen for God knows how long. So yeah, let's just enjoy the ride, not get too high at the ups and not too low at the downs and see where we end up.

I still think (I'm sure I'm not alone) that the remaining games this month will define our season. We had a disappointment against Plymouth and a great win last night, so it's still finely poised. If we pick up more points than we drop against Oxford, S'land and Rotherham we could start to genuinely look forward to a fine back end of the season.

Very few (if any) denied the poor start.

I like to give managers time, time to build something, to build a football side, but the constant negativity around when we were 5/6 games into a new era was so annoying to read. It seemed certain individuals didn't post when we won, but posted 3/4 times as soon as something went against us.

My plea is to let Cook build this squad, we have a top manager with incredible track record, let's all get behind him, his staff, the players and enjoy the journey.

We have investment, we have infrastructure, we have resources, we have the manager and staff, we have the players and we have the best supporters that follow this club around the country.

It is everything we've been starved of, so let's all enjoy supporting Town on the journey.

Amen.

The talk about why people are 'Cook in' or 'Cook out' is largely derived from exasperation at how quickly some people took such a negative standpoint this season. It was all far too early and hyperbolic.

"In summary massive question marks remain on Cook".....

Think you need to have a word with *checks notes* unstableblue who posted the above *checks notes* just 3 days ago.

As the TWTD fractures again it’s time for a trusted performance assessment mod by unstableblue 31 Oct 2021 12:49
So season so far - P15 W5 D5 L5 - 20 points

Last 6 - W3 D1 L2 - 10 points

People referencing last season seems a little misguided as it’s quite clear that the majority of the legacy squad has just not performed at other clubs bar Wilson (was he not injured?), Downes (who really didn’t want to be here)… who else? Edwards was seen as one of our best attacking players can’t get a game.

Also we have to stop this silliness that this is a easy League and we have a god given right to ‘walk the league’, I feel the standard has increased significantly since lamberts hapless attempts. Take Fleetwood, mock them, but they are good and took a point and scored 3 against form Wigan, Rotherham are rocking, Wigan have invested and are flying.

Take Plymouth, extremely well coached, in great form, and have our player of the season, and increasing crowds.

But let’s judge Cook and the teams progress via some clear measures

1. Have more energy, confidence and desire than the opposition

This for me has been a key factor in our earlier poor season form and part of our recent improvement. Marcus Stewart made so many observations about this yesterday, just more energy and pressing across the team. More belief. More confidence. BUT as Edmundson pointed out overall Plymouth had greater desire and won more battles overall. We have to keep improving in this area, none more so than on Tuesday at Wycombe. I feel this measure has a lot to do with the players but also Cook needs to set the mind set. I know they have been using a psychologist at the club

2. Have the better players on the pitch and on the bench

This should be one of our key strengths and a big reason people think we should be top two, but it’s only one of the measures. I thought that we were beginning to reap the rewards of this and beginning to settle on our best team with Aluko and Chaplin now settling. BUT I’m going to give Cook a green card here - the late illness for Burns and Donacien made a huge difference, it so weakened one side which they exploited, and I think Burns would have been a critical threat. But more importantly to the reason the season has faltered is INDIVIDUAL ERRORS! It is the number one reason we are not top six without a doubt. And it’s howlers, game management and silly fouls in dangerous areas. IT HAS TO STOP. I think Cook has to keep drilling it into them, BUT players like Penney need to step up, sort themselves out or be dropped. That was more than a ‘leg up’ for Plymouth it was a ribbon bowed gift

3. Have the better tactical and technical set-up and system of play

This is Cooks wheel house, this is where he is culpable. Is he failing, in part yes and in part no. The defence has hugely improved, the number 10 and midfield width has been clicking. If you’d asked me after Bolton I’d say Cook was failing miserably on this measure. There have been signs of the system gelling and settling. Somewhat ruined yesterday - when we came up against a very good tactical manager at Plymouth. Where Cook perhaps messed up was his selection into the system yesterday… I think he felt Coulson would protect the wolf better… but perhaps celinas energy would have been better from the start

In summary massive question marks remain on Cook, but players are also culpable, illness may have impacted more than people are giving credit. Player energy has to improve further.

Thank you, I welcome any queries?!

....it's perfectly acceptable to have doubts about him.

He finished last season appallingly, and started this season poorly.

We look like we are starting to find a rhythm, but we are still struggling to string wins together.

We are 2 games into a pivotal run of 5 games, so far we have won one and lost one.

The fans that are lauding the manager as if he is some sort of miracle working football genius are just as bad as those that constantly demand his head.

Enjoy the result last night, but don't spaff your wad over him just yet.

When we're sitting what 9th in league 1 after 16 games? Good luck with that.

History would suggest we do have a top league 1 manager, definitely want to trust him and I think it's clear he is getting the backing by home/away numbers and the vocal support at those games.

But come on, as Joe has said, until we're comfortably in the play offs at least, then it's more than reasonable to expect there to be doubts over the job he's doing.

Part of being a football fan is having the right to change your view on things, I change mine week by week sometimes depending on how we've played! There doesn't have to be a situation where your colours are nailed to the mask as when you do this, then you naturally look for points to support your argument.

We're getting there. I love what Cook says in virtually every interview as it's clear he watches the same game as us. Last night was superb so let's hope that continues.

No Joe, no

We have stop this

Cook is an excellent manager who needs time., Plymouth was not the clusterf@ck Cook performance that so many make it… it was a player error issue in defence and attack

Ashton and Cook asked for patience, 20% of this board have not given it

There is a spirit, momentum, energy but more importantly for Cook a system of play emerging

Wycombe are tough, that was a strong side - but they could not handle our switch of play, midfield solidity, movement and width, AND our doggedness in defence

This is a project, it is obvious that is has been slowly improving

Let’s get behind it

....it's a 3rd Division football team.

You are such a drama queen.

I will do what I want thank you, yesterday was superb, the Pompey game was very good and there are clear signs we are moving in the right direction.

But I'm not going to laud Cook as the answer until we get at least close to where we need to be - I'll be sticking with my view that the next few games vs the top sides will tell us where we are - and until they play out I won't get too high with the highs or too low with the lows.

If we can play like we did last night every week then brilliant and Cook will earn the time he will get - if standards fall back down and it continues as two steps forward and one back then he'll get less time.

Everyone on here wants Cook to succeed, even if it is only because they don't like him but don't want another season in this league - but last night has to be the continuation of something, not the high point - Cook's view on things always seems more simialr to those who are deemed as 'Cook outers' who in most cases are just 'Cook needs to do betters'

I’ve been a big critic of Cook and a few weeks ago was concerned that he wasn’t making the best use of the brilliant squad he had pulled together.

However, I think we can now start to be a bit more positive again. I get the point about seeing how the next few games go, but right now, after playing against 2 of the top three teams we can say that our performances have been good and excellent. The form is good and there is no evidence to suggest that we are going to slip back into that early season form again. Every team in this league will have off days, and players will make mistakes - but it seems to me that every indicator, be it results, style of play, level of performance or whatever else, shows that we are on an upward trajectory.

We’re never going to play like last night every week, that’s just unrealistic. I think these two games have shown us where we are (or at least where we can be) so I don’t need the next few to tell me anything else. All they will confirm is consistency or not.

Last thing - you say we should wait until we’re near where we want to be. We’re just 4 points off the play offs as things stand. What consists of being ‘near’ - unless you want to say that only the auto places are good enough.

Indeed, let's not get to an extreme where "Cook out" is the call after the Plymouth loss & then "Cook is the messiah" after last night's win.
Plenty of reason for people to have had misgivings after the poor start to the season. Very few were calling for his head, but it was reasonable to begin to question how long he should be given.

Things are without a doubt improving, and we can really dream that this season is going to be a fun ride from here on in - but we are not going to have an easy time over the next couple of months with the run of games we have until CHristmas.

We ran them ragged for a good period last night - but we still needed every one of the XI to stand up and be counted - a fabulous save from Walton at 3-1 was so so important. Football is a low margin game and we need a lot of bits of luck alongside everything else.

I felt we should be competing for automatics, but also feel that is gone now - we need to be pushing up the table and in the top 6 as minimum I think we need to achieve is to cement ourselves in that top 6 - not be in a position where we are fighting for 6th place

You're absolutely right, it is a low-margin game and we've been on the wrong side of those fine margins on multiple occasions. We weren't being blown away by teams. That's why so many fans have pleaded to give the project time and cut the negativity, because we've been so close to picking up more points throughout the season.

On another day, we win at Cambridge and get a third killer goal. On another day, we manage to hold on to the win at home to AFC Wimbledon. On another day, Bonne scores that sitter at Cheltenham and we go on to take another point or 3. Those combined would see us 5-7 points better off - just a win off the top two. It's not like Cook was failing. In many ways, players needed to start taking more individual responsibility on the field, which they did superbly last night in particular.

Joe, no-one is expecting you to laud Cook as the answer. But I think what would be good would be if you could give him a chance to prove himself.

None of us really know how far Cook can take us. He could take us to the Prem with a double promotion, I think it is certainly possible. But he could equally fail to eradicate some of the teams current failings and we end up mid table at the end of the season. But either way, we should really give him a fair crack at the whip and get behind him and the team.

I agree with you.

But can’t help pointing out that we are actually “pushing up the table”! As things stand I’m pretty confident now that regardless of results in the next few games we will be comfortably in the top 6 come the end of the season. If we’re not then we will have have pretty much stagnated in our present position. Even a slight improvement in the 2nd half of the season will see us in the top 6.

Yeah, I think that's fair enough. Although I can understand the negativity in the context of what's gone on over the last several years - we'd got to the point where we needed blind faith to imagine us being successful. Some was way over the top though, for sure. Most people seem remarkably patient and have been happy to see how things unfold. And the support in the grounds has remained very good of course. mazing really considering where we are.

Top 6 is definitely looking most likely given our current position. To get top 2 would require a 20 game / 60 pts winning streak. Not convinced we are that good yet, but its certainly going to be a fun ride.

I don't know where the idea that Cook hasn't had a fair crack of the whip has come from. He got a pass for last season, got huge investment, had huge support everywhere we've gone, very little discontent in the stadium considering we've plumbed new depths for league position. Seemingly no imminent threat to his position from the owners, never more than a tiny tiny minority of fans actually wanting him out immediately.

I don't think he would get anywhere near this opportunity, this patience, at any other club.
A bit of criticism on message boards and podcasts is the least he could expect, surely?

It cuts both ways. On another day the Wednesday keeper doesn't have a brain fart in the last minute and we lose a second successive home game. On another day the very, very tight offside call at Lincoln goes their way and we're 1-1 just after half time with the momentum in their favour. I don't feel like we've been especially hard done by this season, we naturally tend to remember our own "what ifs" but every side we've played against will be able to point to their own as well.

However, you seem to be suggesting that fans should all be supportive of Cook on message boards. Negativity on here won't make an iota of difference to how the team performs & the whole point of the existence of message boards is that fans can express different opinions.

Those who seem to be taking flack today have mostly *self-certified that they have only ever* echoed the manager's own appraisal of his and the teams performance....

Yawn.

He's had all that... but the crucial thing he hasn't had, as many of us have been banging on about for ages, is time.

He's had more time now. And now, the form and results are massively improving. Coincidence?

Trust the process. Trust Phil.

'And now, the form and results are massively improving'.

Morsy that has been perhaps a key in our improvement. Little wonder he was desperate to sign him for us. What a hell of difference in the middle of the pitch to anything we used to watch in recent years.
