Worst tackle ever... 19:47 - Nov 11 with 2741 viewsThe_Major

Sat here watching the season highlights DVD for 2007/08 (Legwinski! Dan Harding! Colchester in the Championship!) and just saw Wilnis get sent off at Plymouth for basically leaping two footed at some poor bloke in green who near enough landed in Exeter.

Got me thinking, what is probably the worst tackle anyone has ever seen a Town player commit? Not talking here about accidental collisions like Wile/Talbot at Highbury or when Luc Nilis was unfortunately destroyed by Richard Wright, but the sort of tackle that results in a card, the opposing bench leap up in fury and you wincing in the stands.

Two of the few players that have played for both sides.

No idea when I began here, was a very long time ago. Previously known as Spirit_of_81. Love cheese, hate the colour of it, this is why it requires some blue in it.

Steve McCall on Trevor Steven at Goodison in 1985... probably cost us an FA cup semi final appearance. Steve was in his mid 20's here, oldest youngman ever.

To be dismissed in those days without a prior caution was some going.

Yes absolutely - I must confess I had to look it up to check, but Donowa's season at Town was jusssst after Putney left Norwich. It got me thinking - are there two players who played against each other in an East Anglian derby on opposing teams, and then again on the opposite opposing teams (if you see what I mean). I can't think of any

One of course where we were the victims was poor old David Johnson Mark I, who was nearly castrated by Lazio.

One that springs to mind recently is the one by a Watford player (can't recall his name but I think it was Scandinavian) on Jonny Williams at Portman Road.

We went on to win the game, but how that tackle never got a red card was beyond me.

His name was Joel Ekstrand. Karma bit him in the return fixture at Vicarage Road (the Richard Chaplow game). He tried to close down Tyrone Mings, Mings did a body swerve, Ekstrand went past him, tried to turn back to where Mings was and promptly tore his cruciate ligament.

Not a tackle, but Downes attempted headbutt in a friendly was pretty nasty.

He went down a fair bit in my eyes with that. But surprising to me how that was generally just accepted.

Attempted?!! He absolutely clattered him. Never seen anything like it at a game of football.

Heartbreaking to see how dominant we were and good chances being missed. To then give Bruce a free facking header at the end of the game.

There was also an attempted emasculation of David McGoldrick that went unpunished at around the same time.

Wish we had a few videos of Thetis. What a legend. Iconic name in my household.

Not a bad challenge, but Bramble's tackle that left Keane afraid to venture into our half for the rest of the game... Remember that being awesome.

Hyam on Judge got a few worked up.

Personally I thought Hyam was much maligned over that tackle, Judge had lost control of the ball, both players dived in for it, unfortunately Judge got his studs stuck in the turf and came off badly.

[Post edited 11 Nov 2021 20:29]

That happened right in front of me and at the time in real time it looked horrendous. At the time it looked a red card all day long. I’m still amazed MM left Hyam on the field after that. It was never going to end well.

The Harald Schumacher nailing of Battiston in the World Cup was pretty spectacular. For Ipswich, Derek Jefferson left his calling card on a few, but then his eyesight was poor!

Of course no yellow it was 'a bad bit of over-reaction' from Putney.

Not an especially dangerous tackle, but this, um, slightly mistimed effort from Micky Stockwell at Leeds in '93 always makes me chuckle. Not a tough decision for the ref to award a penalty.

Love Sticky's expression afterwards. "Yes, OK, I may have got that wrong."

In the home game that season (the 4-2 win), there was of course David Batty basically trying to launch Paul Goddard over the North Stand. Probably one of the most blatant penalties I've ever seen.
