Another player collapsed 14:38 - Nov 25 with 6951 viewsJon_456

Wigan have confirmed Charlie Wyke out for the foreseeable after collapsing in training before Cambridge.

There does seem to be an increase in players collapsing over the past year or so.

Are players being trained to push themselves more these days or just a coincidence?

Edit: Was actually in training, not in game.

For a player to collapse is quite a big thing, cant imagine teams have simply not reported on them before.

Agreed.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if, previously, things like this might have been kept quieter as part of the culture within a club.

With everything going on these days, all it takes is one member of staff with an agenda to leak the information.

What a bizarre reply.

Of course it’s more, that’s two within three days that have collapsed, it’s quite a big thing and it’s always reported on.

Obviously Eriksen in the summer.

Plus Aguero and Bowman with heart issues.

Seen numerous people [admittedly on Twitter] ask the question if these incidents are related to Covid and/or the vaccine.

It almost seems to be every week at the moment, with it either being a fan or player.

Either way, I hope Wyke has a speedy recovery and is back to full health soon.

Same on the bbc sport on facebook.

Fristly does Nigel down the pub/on facebook know if these players have even been vaccinated?
Secondly, does the vaccine cause people to collapse? I didn't read about that.

I think these athletes are so highly tuned, it must affect the body long term anyway.

Yes, just been reading a thread on that too, alongside a video showing reports of young athletes collapsing and/or passing away.

Apparently 108 FIFA registered players have died in the past 6 months. (source: express football)

Some ridiculous claims out there, that said, I would be interested in some research about the affects of long Covid on professional athletes.

Currently know someone who can barely walk up the stairs after having Covid almost 2 months ago.

What's wrong with you Sitters? It was a question - not a statement and a fair question at that.

Just looking at deaths (which I appreciate doesn't cover everything) and this is also via Wiki so let's not take it as absolute gospel:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_association_footballers_who_died_while_pla

14 players died whilst playing football in 2021
12 players died whilst playing football in 2016
10 in 2015

Numbers do drop as you head back but, again, as we go further back, are they as well reported as now?

It's a concern, for sure, and worrying but I was merely asking the question.

Maybe not in the UK or Europe but what about other areas? I genuinely don't know just asking.

A real concern and possibly the high press of today could be a contributory factor.

We can only hope he has a speedy recovery.

On a positive note, a bullet dodged by us by not pursuing him in the summer.

Good question. It's always been a thing, although I've not seen a reliable analysis of numbers.

The Athletic had an article on it recently if anyone has a subscription. I haven't so haven't read it, but might be interesting to see what they say - https://theathletic.com/2963733/2021/11/19/someone-collapses-football-pitch-ever

A quick wiki shows sudden death of all athletes from collapse to be quite a longstanding thing: "However, a population as large as the United States will experience the sudden cardiac death of a competitive athlete at the average rate of one every three days" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sudden_cardiac_death_of_athletes

So they've certainly been happening across a wide range of sports, yet we only often hear about the high profiles cases. I suspect there's a reporting bias because of the now claimed link with vaccines by some people. Again, I've not seen anything credible that proves that link to be real.

Probably.. Any UK born ones will have had all or most of:

Diphtheria
hepatitis B
Hib (Haemophilus influenzae type b)
polio
tetanus
whooping cough (pertussis)
Rotavirus vaccine
MenB
Pneumococcal (PCV) vaccine
Hib/MenC
MMR
HPV vaccine
Tetanus, diphtheria and polio booster

If they've travelled, they may also have had:

typhoid
hepatitis A
cholera
hepatitis B
Japanese encephalitis
meningitis vaccines
rabies
tick-borne encephalitis
tuberculosis (TB)
yellow fever

Some may have had a Covid vaccine too

If it was vaccine related then we would also expect to see large instances of this across all professional sport and also amongst amateurs and as of yet I don't believe there is any evidence of that whatsoever.

The first place people go now whenever anything happens is "were they vaccinated".

Getting pretty sick of it to be honest.

There we are - proof that people were being given the covid vaccines back in 2015 and 2016. THEY knew about Covid, and had to manufacture a pandemic to sell the vaccines. WAKE UP SHEEPLE!

(Btw, in all seriousness, hopefully someone will take a look at the stats around this. I'm sure they will - if questions are being asked, med schools/sports science departments in universities around the world will be all over it).
