New Manager - Is It Just Me 20:39 - Dec 5 with 4213 viewsOsborneOneNil

..who’s a bit ‘meh’ about it all. It’s normally quite an exciting time, see who our next great hope is, but I’m failing to get moved by it at all.

I kinda think that if Paul Cook, who I wanted here for 2 years, couldn’t do it (or wasn’t given the time to) then who on Earth can/will.

Maybe I’m just worn out with the Town saga….years of false dawns and false hope.

Yep same, Cooks time here aside from clearing out the dead wood has been a failure but in all honesty the names being thrown around literally fill me with dread and I can’t get excited by any of them.

I’ve taken a conscious decision not to get involved in speculation or expectation. After so many recent false dawns, I quite frankly don’t care who it is as long as they deliver on and off the pitch for the club. Whoever it is deserves and needs our backing.

It's 106 miles to Portman Road, we've got a full tank of gas, half a round of Port Salut, it's dark... and we're wearing blue tinted sunglasses.

Problem is. We've had
Keane
Jewell
Hurst
Lambert
Cook

The good news is.. Evans isn't hiring the next one

The bad news is Ashton hired Dean Holden

Fk knows who we will get. But we've not been blessed have we.

Me too. I can't even think of anyone that would excite me to be here. Frank yallop....really?

Anyone top notch won't come here.

I'd consider Michael Carrick. For no particular reason other than he's been coaching at top level and seems level headed.

The issue is that a lot of our players joined because of Cook, and he hadn't exactly lost the dressing room. I can't see there being much of a new manager bounce.

Yep I’m with you on this. Just have a really empty feeling today. Gutted that things haven’t worked out for Cook and am a little uneasy that we’ve perhaps wielded the axe a little too soon.

Not one of the potential candidates mentioned on here today excite me as much as the prospect of Cook being appointed when we finally rid ourselves of the dour Scotsman last season.

Cook’s refusal to be flexible with his tactical approach and the appointment of an unconvincing coaching staff have ultimately led to his demise. But his passion and honesty was a breath of fresh air. I’m really disappointed for him and am really concerned about the next appointment.

More excited than I've been for ages, this ownership didn't mess about with player recruitment and they won't with manager recruitment either. If we can get up they'll make funds available for us to genuinely compete in the Championship. This season has been a huge disappointment but beyond that the future is bright. COYB

When McCarthy went, the choice was Ross or Hurst. Both highly regarded. What was not to like. When Hurst went, nobody seemed available so we got lumbered Lambert. After Lambert, Cook was the standout choice. What have we now? A load of old has beens, people that will no more come here than fly to Mars and two or three ‘names’ who’ve never done anything in the management game.

All we seem to be left with is McGreal. I hope Ashton, O’Leary know what they’re doing.

I'm interested to see who the New Regime go for, what kind of person, level of experience, whether UK or overseas, etc.

It will be a specialised team of coaching staff hand-picked from around the globe.

And a master tactician who'll even have his own marker pen and everything.

You'll see.

In fairness to Cook he came in for one job (under Evans as the old school manager) and ended u with a totally different one (working in a big footballing structure with lots of voices around him)

We are now recruiting a manager to fit in with a structure in place, so it may not be as big a name, and likely won't be a manager with a comparable track record (very few have that) but it *should* be a better fit for the club.

Agreed. Are we really is a position, with this squad, that we think no one can do as 'well' as Cook?

It's not just that. More if it is not one of the "usual suspects" or a "steady hand", but someone interesting from abroad, or an up-and-coming young manager. Or a manager somehow enticed from a higher level.

but I dont get the "they only came here for Cook" angle, when they havent exactly been busting a gut to help him keep his job in the first place.

we havent heard anything from these players in recent months that they are really hurting that it hasnt clicked yet and were doing everything to turn it around, its just been the usual say nothing platitudes about going again.

Indeed. The idea that 11th in L1 is some terrifyingly difficult standard to improve upon is just bizarre.

The recent changes, failures and false dawns must affect interest. I'm very meh. It doesn't bother me in the slightest who they'll pick*. I can't influence it and I'll just see how it develops and continue to support us whoever it is. Too many people get far too wedded to individual managers and then make themselves look silly by desperately trying to defend them when it goes wrong or gloating when it goes right.

I hope whoever we get has a good go at the job and gets us playing decent football and up the league. But if not, I'll lose no sleep when they're sacked.

*(Having said that, I'm not keen on Warnock. But if it was to be him then so be it).

Yes that about sums it up, I liked cook and broadly what he was trying to do in the context of it being a bit of a project. I’m totally patient in terms of the longed for success as merely existing in the championship doesn’t excite me that greatly compared with where we are now. Having said all that whilst I preferred him out of the short list we came to I haven’t any great allegiance to him but like you hadn’t even thought about an alternative at this point or a way forward, so whatever.

Joe - Perhaps you could explain the big footballing structure to me, as I am really struggling to see when and where a clear management system has been put in place that means that we only need a head coach?

If Andy Rolls and Ashton are forming a joint technical/footballing director role, then that’s not been very well communicated.
