Haven't been so excited about a managerial appt. since, well ... ever. 20:40 - Dec 16 with 6890 viewsRyorry

Let's face it, state we're in we weren't going to be able to land any proven top quality man, needed someone wanting to make a name for himself who relishes a challenge & knows enough to take us all the way to the top! (OK, feel free to bookmark this & bring it back to embarrass me if I turn out to be horribly wrong )

I imagine all our players would respect & listen to him & his coaches too, pretty crucial, they 100% need to shape up.

It’s probably because I’m one of the few on here who has been in a situation like this (all be it a lower level) where a manager m, whose players were exceptionally loyal, was sacked and an unknown came in. My point is that professional or not, players are human and that is not going to be a very harmonious dressing room right now.

In my opinion, we’ve gone the wrong way with this appointment. We’ve appointed someone with not a lot to back up his ideas. Players need to trust something and quickly and there’s not much to point to instantly. I’m sure he’s a good coach but as I’ve said, coaching to management is very different. Players in that squad have all played at higher levels, in bigger tournaments and for more established, celebrated managers so this is a majorly tough gig for him and not one everyone in that squad is going to warm to.

"When I did this drill with Cristiano last week" would grab my attention more than "look at these medals I won 20 years ago as a player". But everyone's different!

Eddie Howe played nearly 300 league games as well as England under-21s and started managing at a club he’d been at most of his life where he’s coached for 4 years previously - entirely different.

Julian Naglesmann
Mauricio Sarri
Villas Boas
Brendan Rodger’s

What did all those managers need to get to the top… A chance. Somebody to take a gamble on them.

Naglesman is 34 and one of the list sought after coaches in the world, he had nowhere near the pedigree McKenna has. Does that mean it will 100% work, no.

But is what you are saying complete nonsense, yes.

For sure. I suspect that goes some way to explaining the abject performances under McGreal. McKenna's go this work cut out, but I suspect he's going into it fully aware of the challenge.

Yeah no doubt. Going back to the point about charisma, sometimes that’s enough to get a tune out of players. Unfortunately in McGreal’s case he doesn’t have that in abundance and he’s proved tactically inept two out of three games so far. I’m not sure if that makes McKenna’s job harder or not but either way, what he does and how he is the minute he walks into the club is going to decide whether he sinks or swims with this squad. Hopefully he’s mature and intelligent enough to already have a strategy in place.

Are you trying to say you were a bit of an arse to your new manager, so Morsey could be the same?

Nope played for some nothing clubs in Portugal. If the players don’t respect him cause of his status as a non pro footballer. They should be out of the sport

Why would Sam Morsy who’s played in a World Cup listen to a man a few years older than him who didn’t make it as a professional?

I'd rather we played McKenna over Morsy at the moment.

If the players were that desperate to keep Cook they would have proved it on the pitch. If they were trying, and it was the tactics which were the problem, then it was the right decision to sack him.

What! Why would Morsy listen. I guess being ex 1st team coach at Man United, with players like Ronaldo etc could be a clue

This is far better than the usual suspects who flock around lower league clubs, recruiting their henchmen, obtaining players they know and scuffling about. He has a sound footballing background, will bring in expertise and hopefully contacts in the North west for players and loans.

Cant see him having problems with players or staff at Town.

I think you’re reaching a bit hard there. What I am saying is that there’s going to be a bit of a hangover for sure. Just reading Martyn Pert’s CV. Looks very interesting and well travelled.

His ideas got him to have a prominent role in the first team of the biggest club in world football for nearly 4 years, but yeah other than that not much.

We should just fold the club tbh, if that charming, charismatic, football manager god Paul Cook faired so abysmally then what chance does anyone else have?

Asking, not reaching, so you personally respected the new manager in your situation, it was others that were being a bit arsey?

How did that get resolved?

If that is Morsy’s attitude, the sooner he’s gone the better.

I couldn’t care a less if he’s played in the Intergalactic Cup. He either puts 100% into the club he plays for and is well paid by or he ships out. Same for anyone else.

Don't worry Ryorry even if you do turn out to be wrong you'll never look as stupid as those who search thousands of posts just to try and find one to embarrass someone with, gaining brownie points in any way shape or form is never a good look imo.

I did agree with you up to a point (Charlton) re giving Cook longer, but now he's gone & we're moving on, I don't get why you're choosing to continue in negative mode & looking for the downside in everything tbh.

You might as well at least enjoy this interlude where we can all at least hope, before his first games in charge!

I would have given Cook longer too (on balance), but I understand why he was kicked out and he can have no complaints. As you rightly say, it’s done now. Over.

I think it’s an interesting appointment. I’ll be interested to hear what he and MA have to say.

I don’t understand this angle of they must have been a great player to be a manager. Ferguson and Mourinho managed ok and they’re not alone. Lampard was getting lots of worship on here, but from what I saw from Derby and Chelsea was distinctly underwhelming.

Anyway, the new manager is appointed and I hope he gets people’s patience and support.

This bizarre notion that one has to have been a successful professional player in order to be a successful manager needs to be consigned to the bin.

Age is irrelevant.

This really is a poor post.

We recently had a manager who won the champions league with Dortmund and they players NEVER listened to him. Probably because he was a bone-idle incompetent. I suspect if he's as good a coach as his rep suggests rather than being a tiresome blowhard who keeps vvanking on about his time at Celtic rather than coaching or organising, they'll listen to him.

I'm one of the people who was blamed for getting Paul Cook sacked. PM for the full post.

Playing experience point - Arsene Wenger (never played for a professional club)

The best of this for me is that he is clearly committed to improving players. I suspect that is why he was brought in. Charisma on its own will get you so far but hard work without intelligence just wears people down. It is a risk but definitely one worth taking to break the cycle of the last 12 years. In his interview, he comes across as very thorough, with high standards but also an ability to say the right things to players.

The second best element is that I can see the club philosophy more clearly i.e bringing young players through and creating the habits needed to be successful. Even if only a few get big money transfers it will fund the fees for the more experienced players we will also need.
