If you were a referee what biases would you bring? 14:43 - Jan 30 with 3492 viewsIllinoisblue

I would stop the over protection of goalkeepers at corner kicks. Goalies would have to be getting attacked by an axe murderer before I’d consider reaching for my whistle.

Automatic yellow cards for any "tactical foul". If you gain an advantage from fouling, you're getting a yellow card.

I'd look for an opportunity early on to book the goalkeepers so they will be careful on time wasting.

All that throwing the ball beyond the 6 yard box, then taking an age to retrieve it, then deciding to take it the other side and accidentally miscontrolling it, and taking an age to retrieve it....

What Lagos said

Plus if ever I reffed a game where Lamberk, Hurst, Jewell or Keane were involved in any way, even if that was just as a spectator or pundit I’d stop the game after 10 seconds and expel them from the ground

I suppose so but just imagine being in charity game and finding Lamberk & Hurst are in the opposite team

Which one would you take out first?

Bring back the offence of obstruction. I'm sure you never used to be able to put your arms out and prevent the opposition player reaching be the ball when trying to shepherd it out of play.

If a team spends too long celebrating a goal, just let the other team re-start the game without them.

i) A yellow card for anyone with poor enough taste wear a yellow shirt. A second yellow, and concommitant red, for anyone compounding that offence by the wearing of green shorts.

ii) Support for the campaign for the removal of the 'seven players or more on the pitch' clause for the game to continue (Law 3), and replacement with 'at least a goalkeeper on the pitch'.

iii) For environmental reasons, teams will NOT change their kits ever again, and will have to source replacements from their supporters when their own supplies run out.

iii.a) This includes optional woolie gloves which may have special features for certain clubs.

iv) Removal of relegation from, and promotion to Division 4, such that any team falling foul of i) & ii) will be naturally marooned in perpetuity at the bottom of Division 4, still wholly within the sight, and subject to the never-ending ridicule of the entire footballing world.

That's probably just bad officiating or he was still in communication with the ref about it. Most games in League 1 they seem to be fairly swift about putting the flag up.

The only reason they do it late in the Prem is because it allows VAR to be used as intended otherwise a wrong call could spoil a perfectly fair goalscoring chance. Obviously that doesn't stop potential injuries and I would scrap the whole lot and just accept that linesmen get it wrong occasionally.

No. Rules are until the player who is offside touches the ball or interferes with play. That's why you see the player running onto the ball and only being flagged when he touches the ball.

I would book any player seen celebrating when their team is awarded a penalty.
Any hugging, hand shaking, high fiving or air punching between the decision and the actual penalty being taken would be shown the yellow.

Assistant needs to stay level with second last defender and they can’t be in two places at once, especially when the ball exits in the half they don’t patrol. There’s really no excuse for referees not being more proactive in policing where the throw is taken from though, it’s ridiculous how many yards are gained in some cases.

It's become accepted that at every throw in in your own half, you can run 10 yards from where the ball went out & then hurl it down the line. Almost everyone does it so refs or linesmen don't want to be seen as pedants as any advantage gained is marginal. Yes, it's all part of the " a little bit of rule breaking is OK". I am much more irritated by the constant delaying of free kicks by a defender kicking the ball away, standing by the ball or picking up the ball, walking back 10 yards & then politely throwing the ball back. Should be an automatic yellow & then players might stop doing it.

Enforce zero warnings for blatant timewasting.

Nowadays players get three, sometimes four warnings if they time waste. Perfect example is KVY, held onto the ball for a throw for too long, got a silly yellow and then a late red card. That’s how the game should be.

If I was a ref, and the goalkeeper was taking ages over a goal kick at 1-0 in the first half, go over and give him the yellow card. He won’t do it for the next 45 minutes. What you’ll see happening is the ball in play a lot more than usual, and more football gets to be played.

If anyone waved a pretend card I’d send them straight off. I can’t tolerate players trying to get others booked or sent off.. and I shall not be told how to do my job

Same goes for crowding referees after every decision. There would be no players left after a short amount of time

That used to be a rule. I don't know why it's not enforced anymore.

I would send a manger to the dressing room for constantly shouting on the touch line. It's really irritating and unnecessary.

yep, any actioned that is deemed to be trying to delay or interfering with the free kick would be booked

similarly the 15 yard gain on the throw ins

it cannot be beyond the capability of the lino to stand where the ball went out - the crowd could then see where it went out as could the ref

Trouble is as a lino that position can put you 20 yards out of position for the next play.

I know what you are saying, as a ref if there are players trying it on I stand in line with where it went out and shout at the taker "no further than level with me". Easier for me to make up the position than the lino and works every time.

Put the fecking flag up as soon as it’s offside.

The ridiculous situation at the moment is going to cause a serious injury before long.

It is a sea change so more than just what one individual referee can achieve. However, I would want the head of refereeing to look to implement the following:

1 Discourage the whole discussion of everything with players. If the referee makes a decision, that is the decision (unless VAR intervenes) and anyone disputing/discussing it (or trying to persuade the referee to book a player etc) gets a yellow card and the original decision increased in favour of the side not complaining (free kick reversed to opposition, moves up 10 yards or throw in within 10 yards of the corner flag becomes a corner, corner becomes a free kick on edge of the area, free kick inside box becomes penalty etc). This would rapidly eradicate dissent and improve the speed of the game.

2 Rigorously implement the 6 second rule for when a goalkeeper gathers the ball (it rarely is) and have a similar limit for all throw-ins, set pieces etc. (would have to see whether slightly longer might be necessary for these).

3 Have a policy that referees should seek to allow the game to flow with playing advantage being sought as far as possible.

This is all rooted in the idea that football should be an entertainment business and professional timewasting is not entertaining.

Agree with 2. Futsal does something similar, writing it into LOTG for the regular game would just stop so much angst that the referee can do nothing about.

3 I also agree with, but this seems to be a generational thing. Some of the old school referees just won't play advantage, just like they won't use dissent sin bins. Some of them are still playing the LOTG from 2015, and perhaps even earlier.....

"Assistant needs to stay level with second last defender and they can’t be in two places at once"

ah yes, I wondered who would be the first to spot that

More so when the ball goes out near the corner flag, and it is a throw in for the defending team. What advantage there is, is lost by the player taking the throw in from far further up the pitch.

Ref can sort this out easily, with a word to both teams before the game. Any gaining ground and the throw is awarded to the opposition.

VAR rules on a mere inch difference - throw in, 15 yards with no complaint.

Offside should be judged by in-play technology that removes the need for human judgement and for VAR to review them. If we can have goal-line technology that works, it shouldn't be too difficult to get technology to judge offsides using a camera that stays in line with the penultimate defensive player and another one that is linked that identifies the moment a forward pass is made. There could even be a robotic flag raised from the mobile camera unit going up and down the side line.
