It depends on the context. If the dad says to the kid, 'I am going out tonight. Would you mind waiting here on your own for a few hours?' and gives the kid an iPad, then he'll be fine. If the dad just leaves the kid in the hotel on his own and the kid has no idea when his dad will be back or what he's doing, then that's obviously child neglect. It also depends if drinking means just a little or actually getting drunk.

It certainly depends on the context.

Even finer margin than that... You can leave your kids alone when they turn 12.

https://www.gov.uk/law-on-leaving-your-child-home-alone

I know a hotel is not home, but how many kids don't have a mobile device with i.c.e numbers in them?

Wonder what tipped off someone to call cops?

Probably the mobile and I.C.E. number that allowed them to ring Mum and say Dad had left them there while he went on the beers ... and then Mum rang the police!

The article doesn't state what "a long period of time" is. It doesn't specify an age because it is about a level of maturity which different children reach at different ages.

Hmm. I expect I’ve left at least one of mine in a hotel at or before that age. Certainly in a room on their own, possibly even leaving the hotel. 11 is year 6. I was pretty independent by then, letting myself in home before my folks got home from work. Spending whole days out fishing on the Gipping, etc. Our oldest is was independent at 12.

As much as we want to wrap them up in cotton wool, an 11 year old is perfectly capable of sleeping in a hotel room or going to ask reception for something in the extremely unlikely event of a problem. But I can also understand if people take a more protective view - it’s a borderline age these days and very personal.

It is difficult as a parent to know when to give how much independence. You hear some horrific things happening but then you can't keep them wrapped up in cotton wool either.

Would love to know the full story here. On face value, if he’s taken his lad to a big game then left him in the hotel room with food, I’m really not seeing a problem. Suspect there’s an angry mum involved.

Not in a strange city, full of strangers whilst they got munted presumably?

That would have to be the assumption. I do remember staying in a London hotel room alone for an evening when I was around the same age, possibly younger and I was fine. Anecdotal but there we are.

You have a point 're safeguarding, staff have duty to call police

Any and every adult in the UK have a legal duty to inform police if a child is at risk of harm. Children Act and subsequent legislation.

I knew someone who used to allow her children to come home from school when she was at work (as a nurse, as it happens). Oldest was 11, then 9 and 7. Neighbour called police. Police investigated. Found that all the children were responsible and capable and knew what to do in an emergency. This is about 10 or so years ago. So investigation doesn't necessarily imply arrest, prosecution or children being put under Social Services. Each case is looked at on its own merits.

But if this child was scared, and went wondering around the hotel looking for Dad, or slept walked even...

Your parents are safe, the Met don't investigate historic cases ... unless there is an embarrassing report that your parents would rather got redacted due to their investigation, that is.

Not really sure what the milage has to do with it, the parent wasn't 100 miles away.

As someone above says, there's got to be more to it. He's not a young minor, as I said he's 2 years from being a teen. I'm not a parent but on the face of it I wouldn't have thought an 11 year old in a hotel room by himself would be too much of a problem.

Some would, some wouldn't.

But if the Dad was going to come back pished then he wouldn't have been capable of exercising a duty of care then, either.

For what it is worth, my money is on the kid phoning the Mum, upset. Mum calls Police and drives down to pick him up.

Or maybe the kid watched Home Alone and started firing nail guns at the Room Service guy's privates, rigging paint can traps, and electrifying door knobs?

I'm sure they'll be relieved to hear! I understand the concern people have re safeguarding and the most important thing is that the child is alright. It will be interesting to see more details on this because the context is the key in my mind. My parents were and still are very cautious and caring, but they did trust me to survive for a few hours and I thank them for giving me that independence. Appreciate that this could be quite a different story once we know the facts but in and of itself, I don't think it is a problem provided precautions are taken.

Yep agree, it really depends on how mature the kid is, you have eleven year olds looking after parents in this country, this is why there really isn't a strict age law on how old a child needs to be..

And the variety of the orders.

My 2 lads are 9 and 13. I wouldn’t go to a Town game away from home and leave either of them in a hotel room to go on the sauce. No chance.

Not as I don’t believe they’d be ok. I just think it’s an odd thing to do. I’d go out, with them, for food and have a beer or two whilst they were with me.

Sounds like a rubbish Dad, to me.

This is exactly where I'd be. If I wanted to get ratted I wouldn't have taken the child in the first place. I completely agree that some children have differing maturity levels but I would have stuck with the law on this one

When I was in infants school I would walk home, wasn’t far and no roads to cross, my mum worked part time in the local sweet shop, I had a key on a ribbon round my neck, I used to let myself in with instructions not to answer the door to strangers and not touch anything until my elder siblings got home half hour later.
At the age of 11 my mum would make ma some sarnies in the school holidays and I would regularly cycle from Bracknell to Windsor and back again, at the age of 13 I was going up to London on the train with my mate for football, by 15 was travelling the length and breadth of the country to away games, all my dad would say to me was “ if I get a phone call from the local constabulary saying you’d been arrested, I will tell them to lock you up and throw away the key.”
I personally think that kids today are far too molly coddled and wrapped in cotton wool.

Bit different to being left in a hotel room miles from home while the Dad goes on the pi55, isn’t it.
