Family days out in or near to Ipswich. 10:47 - Apr 6 with 3044 viewsMattinLondon

I’ll be coming back to Ipswich for a few days snd wondered if anyone has any recommendations for days out in or around Ipswich - say around an hours drive from Ipswich?

Must be family friendly and keep a three and six year old attention for a few hours. Open to most things.

TIA.

Might I recommend Bressingham Steam Museum? Never too young to learn about the wonders of traction engines.

For a full day crabbing at Walberswick, attractions on Southwold pier, boating at Thorpeness, walking around Dunwich. Used to take my kids and it was the trip they always complained about the least.

Bressingham, deffo. I loved going there as a child (and still do).

Colchester Zoo, Easton Farm Park are good for kids

Even just Felixstowe with a walk along front, swim at Leisure Centre and time in the arcade on the Pier will keep them happy and easily fill a day with a bit of food around there

Jimmys Farm is closer to Ipswich and decent enough, Easton is better but much less convenient

Jimmy's Farm.

Suffolk Food Hall has decent food, a kid's play area and is on the River Orwell if they like looking at boats.

Jimmys Farm i find is an absolute rip-off and purely all about the commercial side of things now they've had a bit of TV time.

Felixstowe is actually alright and you can also drive to the quay and see if a container vessel is in and being unloaded.

I would say that a day trip to Felixstowe, get some lunch at that beach container development thing and then toddle off for a walk around Ipswich Marina and some dinner somewhere is a good shout.

If I were you I would pop your troop on a train to London and check out some of hot spots before returning to Suffolk to get the family stuff done.

Easton Farm Park and the Suffolk Punch Trust are good visits. If you don’t make no a drive Thorpe Ness mère is a fantastic few hours entertainment - and can be combined with Fish and Chips and sneering are the hooray henries in Aldeburgh. And Friday Street Farm shop is full of tastes of Suffolk - at a price

A trip to Minsmere might give them a new hobby

Not to mention a pub lunch and pint of Adnams in Southwold!

Get out of Ipswich as fast as you can and go to the coast, preferably north of Woodbridge. I like Aldeburgh and Walberswick.

I utterly agree, having worked there many years ago it’s totally brilliant. Have a look at Channel 5s “Inside the Steam Train Museum” to give you more of an idea of what goes on before you visit.

I went with my little nephew last year, brought back some memories from my early childhood. Quite an interesting museum as well and a nice gardens to stroll around.

I think so, there are some nicer bits there now - few nice pubs and Beach Street has some decent bits

I've never had a proper session down there and not sure it will be great for that, but for the kids there is lots and it is very open

Felixstowe has its merits and I go there a fair bit as it’s convenient. Good promenade, little pier, the Ferry, but given the choice I think I’d go to Aldeburgh. Great fish and chips there too!
