So am I, but this is the first time in years I’ve felt this optimistic and it’s based on the club trying to get its act together from the ground up after years of neglect, not just what McKenna is doing - which I think is brilliant.

Thank goodness it’s in L1 and not L2 or lower which was where we were heading as sure as night follows day.

Shambert had us top twice at this point so I'm my holding my horses until the clocks go back we're over that time when Lambert's teams got found out/ran out of steam.

See how we bounce back when we lose a couple before I jump on board but it does look good, going to sh!thousing opposition and getting 3 points has been something we have struggled to do for ages.

I think that's where I am. Bouncing back with a strong performance and a win after a loss will comfort me a lot (though the defeat itself won't).

But we're playing far better now than we ever did under Lambert.

In all honesty, I just don't see us falling off a cliff under the current set up.. Perhaps the odd blip. But can't see it lasting more than a couple of games, if it were to happen...
There's a seriousness about things this season. Just feels different to me. And I could even see us adding to our squad in January, despite the insane strength of the current squad..
If the right player/players became available. I could see us sneaking in there, with promotion and Championship football in mind for next season. .I think, as long as we can stay around top two heading into January. The powers that be, will do what they can to help us push on..

I get the nervousness having had false dawns before, but we never dominated games like we do now. Our phases of play, our fitness, squad depth, cohesive press and ability to find the spare man in their 3rd is way above what we saw under Lambert. This team would brush that one aside far more often than not IMO.

Got to confess to being way more confident, bullish even, about our chances this season.

Saturday reinforced that, with it being exactly the type of game we usually struggle with.

I'm still reticent to believe it's on. If we make it through this month and we're still top then I'll truly be happy to start to believe. Too many false dawns have meant this start has me happy but not carried away by it all...

That old windbag Lambert’s team did make a couple of good starts. However we did not dominate games and we seemed to take the few chances we got and then hang on, by and large. His team was ageing half decent players, journeymen and those that couldn’t stay fit, loanees and panic buys.

This time we are not pinching games. We have deservedly won the five and it could be argued that Bolton and Barnsley were lucky to get a draw.

The defence has been solid for months now and there is depth to the squad. The players seem to know their roles. However, I agree that the test will come when we lose a couple and we will know a lot more at the end of September.

From the outside looking in, the club looks much more organised and settled than it’s done in years and that reflects in the team. Could my optimism blow up in my face? Easily - it wouldn’t be the first time. I’m way too old not to know what could happen.

However, there’s nothing wrong in just enjoying the moment. Better that than looking to criticise all the time as one or two posters on here relentlessly enjoy doing.

But we never really played *that* well and won convincingly. I remember the first season in league 1, we went on that mad win streak at the start, but everyone was saying we hadn't got out of first gear yet. Turns out that was our only gear.

That was Lamberts top gear, easily his most successful spell for us.

This time it feels differnt, with the new owners, manager, back room staff and real invesment and ambitions for this league.

I'm not getting carried just yet

but do expect us to get promoted this season. storm the championship next season and dominate the premier league the season after that and, while I dont think we will win it, do think we will get champions league qualification and obviously win that the season after

Lamberts lot, and this lot don’t even compare

We were all scratching heads in the PL times thinking ‘he’s changed 6 players and we’ve somehow still won’

Now, it’s well planned out and put into action

The main differences with Lambert are:

1) he was a fairly jaded manager working with a demotivated owner, and lacking decent support structure.

2) at our best under him we were very good, but we were always two injuries or suspensions to key players away from being very average and pedestrian.

The contrast is marked between the Evans/Lambert and Gamechanger/Ashton etc/McKenna. And even at the end of last season under McKenna we all knew that injuries or suspensions to Burns and Morsy would stop us in our tracks. This season we hope that they play on through injury-free, but losing either, and possibly even both, wouldn't completely derail our season. We have great cover in every position, except for Goalkeeper, and even there we probably have better cover than most League One teams would reasonably expect.

And then there is the system and coaching. Kayden Jackson under McKenna is a much better sub option than Kayden Jackson under Lambert.

Lots of reasons to see this differently to Lambert's best spells.

McKenna might be carried away by one of fifteen Prem and championship clubs looking for a new manager before Xmas

Personally I’d wait until a couple of top half teams have been beaten

It's pathetic but I can't get over things like the officiating against Barnsley, and as a Town fan used to the hope killing me, it's these things that make it impossible to feel confident until after winning a game. The confidence lasts for a day or two, then it's nerves for the next match. Yes, it's just as well I'm not backroom staff at ITFC innit.

Were we top on the last game before the first lockdown? Wasn't that February? I remember sitting in The Dove after, think we beat Coventry, and no one round the table could fathom how we were top!

We beat Lincoln at home in January to go back top of the league then fell apart so much so we didn't make the ppg top 6

Lambert new how to set a team up defensively, but that was it - his man management was terrible. He literally didn't speak to any of the players and acted as though he was Fergie and could just turn up on match day and players would be so in awe of his presence that they would run through brick walls for him
