The whole concept of showing respect is meaningless nonsense. Its a display of how respectful you are for the benefit of how others see you. It's a societal expectation with no obvious logic.
I wonder if it all really stems from that human inclination to feel guilty about doing something enjoyable when someone else has died.
I'm hoping you don't get an invite to the funeral, otherwise I reckon it will go something like this:

Depends really doesn't it? Certainly annoying for anyone planning to go and a hassle to sort out refunds for travel etc. but for others it might have been a special occasion for whatever reason. Obviously a postponement in any circumstances would lead to the same but a self-inflicted one in the face of official guidance understandably will sting a lot more with people.
If it's not an issue to call everything off then equally it's not much of an issue to keep everything going. If people felt strongly about not going because they've come to the conclusion it's not respectful then it's up to them but to force everyone not to go when thousands of people will be at best ambivalent to the news doesn't seem to be taking things particularly sensibly.
I guess my point is simply this. As a sport football is choosing to show it's respect by moving games from this weekend to another date - I don't believe football is 'forcing' fans to show respect by doing that.
Don't get me wrong, understand the hassle many go to to get to game and the inconvenience it would cause and that some may not be able to attend that match on another date. In the scheme of thigs, it's not really a huge hardship.

Doesn't load but I suspect you are missing the point.
Funerals have a purpose and only a moron would go along and be disrespectful at one because that upsets others.
That is a long way from an active requirement to 'show respect'. What does it even mean? Why is cancelling something connected with respect for someone who died? Why Is it necessary to make a show of respect at all, whatever that means.

As I've said in another thread, yeah go to work no problem, but god forbid you want to watch the football (or other sport) at the weekend.
And for people saying that businesses with recoup profits later on, that doesn't help a struggling business at the end of this month does it? I was going to go to Sheffield next week with Madge's Brother in law and two others. Chances are we would have got food and multiple beers so perhaps £150-£200 between all of us. Well if the games not on, then we won't bother. Times that by multiple groups of others who would be doing the same and it's a lot of people not spending money in an economy that's already getting screwed over. It's a daily battle at the moment, so recouping profits in 6 months might not actually be an option for some.
The sport showing respect line doesn't cut it for me. The sport is the fans, the enjoyment, the despair, the respect paid to fallen heroes or public figures. What better way to pay respect than to have stadiums around the country belting out the national anthem and then paying their respects. All this has done is p1ss a load of people off who work hard all week and have a small window on a weekend to forget about the stuff going on in their lives and to enjoy themselves at a sporting event.

You don't 'have' to show respect - generally respect is earnt.
As others in this thread have said, there are a multitude of ways you can choose to show respect, if you feel you should do. Football has chosen this approach - rightly or wrongly.

If you ask what it means to show respect, which I think you must do if you want to know what is an active requirement to show respect, then I suspect that you may also need to consider what it means in the opposite case of being disrespectful (at a funeral in teh instance you give.)
We are currently living through that Confucian curse of interesting times, with many people finding their way in a situation they have not encountered before. So I think it is not unreasonable to ask the population to show more restraint than usual in their behaviour for a while, both in the formal ceremony that is the state funeral and in the official period of mourning for seven days afterwards and in the current period leading up to the funeral.

The problem now though Homer is that the opening of the Rugby season is going ahead, the Cricket, Great North Run, Boxing.
Fair enough if all got cancelled but it's making it all a bit messy now.
Not just football, the cricket is off. Have been reading around, in 1901 the FA wanted games off but not all clubs went with that. In 1952 football matches were still on, the test match continued but rugby and hockey were off.

So the official mourning period is all about making businesses suffer.. adults not being able to do what they want to do and children not being able to play the sport they love?

Strange mourning period.
If you want to see it that way then I guess it is - to you. But it is also an opportunity for our four nations to pause and reflect on, what for most of us, the only Sovereign we have ever known in our lives and how she conducted herself as a person and as a functionary. It is also a good time to think about the future and how this Union goes forward. Apologies if you find these ideas too weighty, maybe we all do, but that is part and parcel of life in a polity.

I dunno, this news has annoyed a lot of people pro-Monarchy too, particularly seeing as their weekend plans are ruined but they’re all at work today.
Seems there is a limit in how much contempt the nationalist side of the British public will take. Institutional injustices and inequality they can live with, but with short term personal inconveniences people get annoyed.
I can't believe that there are pro-royal people (and I consider myself as one) who would have been angry/upset/shocked/take your pick if games had gone ahead this weekend.
If it was explained that it was a policing and logistic issue and some games wouldn't be able to be covered so took decision to call all games over then that is understandable/fair enough - I expect a lot of pressure on police especially round London games and maybe not enough BTP available to cover some away games
But I've just had a note that all academy football this weekend is cancelled, an U11 side my mate coaches has had their league cancelled, the SIL league is cancelled - it seems incredible that football has taken this totally unnecessary step.
If the funeral was next weekend and Saturday and Sunday's games were cancelled then I think more would understand that - but think this just annoys too many people and is totally unnecessary

I can pause and reflect on stuff several times a day. I don't need to miss the football to do it.

In that case rugby has handled it perfectly.
Having played both games as a youth, I always thought rugby was the classier game, and I don't mean by that social class. And that statement is pure class.

It is a different situation when millions are experiencing these feelings as they go through this point in our lives, do you think gestures and dispositions, even silences, can communicate a collective consciousness. Big idea I know but for many of us this is a time when we hear the ages scrape against each other and we do not want you to get left out, or left behind.
