Town's long run of no penalties given... 19:28 - Oct 2 with 4512 viewsEdmundo

... without trying to start a thread all about a mystery vendetta by the awful refs in this league, why are we so seldom given a penalty?

You tease. I’ve been resisting just this very thread for a while, because it’s all just my blue tinted bias. Not sure I’d go as far to say a mystery vendetta, but we do seem to consistently be on the wrong side of referee decisions. Be it disallowed goals, penalties not given, clear cut fouls not given, when all of these are seemingly dished out with the merest whiff of a opportunity to our opposition.

Do we not put a chocolate on the pillow for the referee, or something? Or is that Tarricco territory.

I'd guess that supporters of all clubs feel similarly hard done by.

You have chosen not ro mention questionable ref decisions which have gone in our favour. Suggests to me that you are being biased.

Our captain should have missed most of the Plymouth game, with us down to ten, and should now be in the middle of a three match ban. Due to a poor ref decision he played the whole game last week and has not been banned for 3 matches.

A 50/50 with Niall Ennis? Well that evens up the season then!

The law of averages would suggest that we will get a few pens later in the season hopefully at least one of them will be at Fratton Park.

You've asked for one example and I've offered a clear and obvious one. You are now describing a genuinely dirty, nasty foul as a 50/50. You are definitely very biased.

Sorry about that. I’ll try and be a better town fan moving forwards.

It’s particularly surprising given how much possession we have, and how much football we play in advanced areas, particulate wide areas with the likes of Burns and Davis on the overlap. The point I’m making is entries into the opposition box are high, so I’m surprised we don’t / haven’t had more pens over the past year.

There used to be an overused stat that was meant to illustrate a bias towards Man United that something like 80% of penalties given at OT under Fergie were given to United. It always wound me up as it proves nothing of a side that dominated English football for years, it was a tough place to go and they battered teams, dominate possession, it stands to reason they would get more penalties.

The galling thing about it this season is the teams it's haplend against.

Barnsley and Shef W in particular, sure every game is worth 3 points but it's also about swig isn't it.

It's great getting one go for us against whoever but means less if our rivals also win

Two factors why we possibly don’t get penalties.

1) were rarely in the box about to shoot

2) our players are too honest and don’t go looking for it by falling over.

Case in point, v Pompey. Davis gets into the box in first half snd was either about to shoot or cross snd was brought down . But he inexplicably got up again and carried on. Had he stayed down I wonder if the eg would have pointed to the spot ?

Maybe, but we’d have got at least a point from the Plymouth game if Mumba had been sent off for the stamp on Donacien.

A reasonable point though, in my view, it was not as clearcut as the Morsy incident which, in any case, I'd only mentioned when asked to provide an example of us getting the benefit of a referee error.

Some of my best friends are referees.
They're saying that there's some TWTD posters that are showing dissent.
Refs don't like dissent - they dish out red cards for dissent.
Do you want a red card boy? Do yer?
Yea, I thought not.
You gotta nice club here, shame if something happened to it.

We rarely get in the box to shoot? I sometimes think you and me are watching different matches. How do we become top scorers in lg1? How are we regularly creating 15 + chances per match? You're inventing scenarios that don't bear any resemblance to what's going on in games this season.

There is probably something in what McKenna said the other week (if I recall correctly) about referees wanting to show they aren't afraid to make bold calls against a large, baying home crowd. Some of them definitely overcompensate in the other direction, it's fairly clear.

It's a pity they didn't stand up to the crowd at Hillsborough, then. Or is it really about the big city clubs getting the rub of the green? After all, Sheff Wed are more box office than little Ipswich. Only just, mind.

I truly cannot remember the last time we were given a penalty and thought, blimey, we got lucky there.

Actually, when was our last penalty at all?

Not making the comparison at all, but a little hint of Ferguson in his comments, in the way he casually made his point but let everyone know he’s keeping an eye on these things. And maybe it now plants a seed in the minds of fans that we don’t get penalties and will have us baying for marginal decisions.

Having watched the iFollow replay of that game today, it felt as though the Sheff Weds fans had an almighty footstomp/sulk at our game and having drawn from 3-1 up against Portsmouth and lost to Barnsley in their previous home game, they would probably have rioted had we beaten them, so they did all they could to ensure their team got the breaks in those last 20 mins.

The ref Saturday just seemed to think he had to keep the score even for some reason.

We scored so he gave them a penalty.

We score again so he gives them another.

That's how it felt anyway!

Sorry?

Walton absolutely floored matey for the first one, and second one Morsys foot is waist height into their man, both in the penalty area.

What exactly was the red suppose to do?

I’m sure we’ll get a pen or two along the season, we seem to be doing just fine without them
