Another alternative would be for people to heat their homes less and wear more clothes (as was the case before central heating was invented). There's no actual need to be able to sit around in just pants and a t-shirt.

Saves money and burnt hydrocarbons.

Edit: I go into a lot of other people's houses and frequently find them too hot.

This only works during winter but does nothing to stop heatwave issues caused by poor insulation.

Even if we can't do all homes, we should do as many as we can.

Oh and probably shouldn't be drilling for new oil and gas too, given we've been told repeatedly not to do so given the impending climate change emergency.

No excuses to not ensure new homes are kitted out for long-term use for many generations to come is there.

Another trick missed which will need to be corrected retrospectively at greater cost giving more reason to not bother at some point down the line.

All new buildings should incorporate solar panels at the very least.

For those who don't want to be inconvenienced by listening to this, O'Brien points out that JSO/M25 is getting far more attention than Guterres telling us how absolutely fücked each and every person on this planet including you and your children is, if we don't act to reduce - reduce now, not stop - the scale of the coming catastrophe.

That's why they do it.

Off subject but they should follow the example of Burnley FC.

Anyone remember the parachutist who landed in the roof of the away stand, put his foot through it in the process.

They delayed kick off but gave up in the end, as emergency service access was blocked by parked vehicles, just left him there until later.

Yeah, was there, v. annoying delay it was too, friend I was with was going to miss train connections to get back to Hull.

So they're putting protesters in prison ffs, but not the criminally irresponsible fossil fuel corporations serially breaking the law - e.g.

Right wing media shills and shock jocks have to have an enemy. If it isn't JSO it would be Extinction Rebellion, if not them the National Trust, if not them the EU, if not them immigrants, if not them judges, or teachers, or nurses, or university lecturers, etc. Always need to have an enemy to point their followers to and distract them from the meaningful issues.

Climate change is the greatest threat facing humanity and other life on the planet. Bar none.

I find the reaction to the protests depressing, not as much from the predictability of the response (that's always going to happen) but because we've no chance of getting people to make changes if they whinge over a traffic jam. There'll be far more inconvenience in either change habits to address climate change or dealing with the consequences.

Trouble is, if we carry on as usual, the wonderful notion that going to work to earn a living will be a misty eyed throwback to halcyon days.

Unfortunately we live in a world where Govt's and industry kick the can down the road, the amount of people saying "I'll be worm food by the time the s**t really hits the fan, so I don't care" grows day by day.

There is an issue with adequately insulating a lot of UK housing stock - it's not technically straightfoward. Many older Victorian terraced houses (such as the one I live in) could only be done with external cladding*. My neighbours would also have to clad the side of their house, as the end of a row, but intruding several inches into their set back neighbour's drive.

* Or internal, considerably reducing the size of rooms, with hugely deep door/window recesses and requiring full redecoration.

Firstly insulating older housing stock costs money.. and that's where the government bottled the 3 or 4 'green deals' they tried and failed to launch - the simple fact is that the Capex to insulate older properties, is high cost in some cases, and so a payback of reduced energy bills is sometime 4-8 years. But it is incredibly logical and beneficial - a cheap government backed loan to do it. Payback via savings in gas central heating costs. Then the home is cheaper to run and less CO2 intensive. Its exactly the mind set we all need to move to.

You can technically insulate Victorian and older housing stock. My home is 1860. My first step was celotex between the roof joists, then a very thick layer of traditional loft insultation above that - wasn't that expensive and made huge differences. I then installed some quality secondary glazing over a number of years. Again this was a game changer. Through this time I also put celotex underneath floors on ground level. Again siginificant, as hanging floor. The most challenging as you are eluding to was the walls.... I found a breathable, 'thin' solution, which has made crazy gains. The house now is akin to a modern property and we barely need the heating on. It just needs some money and effort. And its already paid back itself given the crazy price of fuel oil, and our CO2 footoring is tiny.

People need to see this as a priority, AND the government need to back people to do it. But its too hard and too forward thinking.

People just don't realise or cannot grasp what it will be like if some of these inflection points do trip... many already have....

UK sort of stumbles through a month of 35c in the summer... that could be 40+ for 3 months, what does that cost? Whilst places in southern asia, africa become unlivable. Where are those people going to go?

And there remain c@nts like Trump, Farage, Hartley-Brewer who still question it?

As per a great video I shared Maggie Thatcher was warning of this in 1988!! 36 years ago.... and being crystal clear that this is no natural cycle (solar intensity) and we need to act.

The permafrost methane potential worries me.

But as you say the can is kicked down the road... Again you've got to start saying to people your taxes and utility bills are going to go up exponentially to pay for climate resilience..... and already are

Just read it. Cheers for the heads-up.

Yes, Starmer is pretty much the archetype of the modern, empty, non-solution and anti-democratic politician. That’s why the whole grown-up/“Better than the Tories” shtick doesn’t actually lead anywhere positive in the real world and with real challenges to overcome.

I think you have to see the impact on the ground in places that are more vulnerable than the UK - so listen to the inuits who are losing their hunting lifestyle, which effectively means the end of their communities and way of life. Listen to those pacific Islanders who are having to abandon islands because they now flood too regularly (or at best have to spend parts of their lives now living with flood water in their homes). There are examples all over the place, but not obviously close to home. That's the challenge and why we see people genuinely thinking climate change is be a good thing because we'll be able to grow more vineyards in the UK. but it's not just about us (the 0.8% of the world's population).

100% this. When Autumn arrived, we tried to stave off introducing the central heating by wearing 3 layers of clothes. Nothing wrong with wearing a sweater at home & turning the thermostat down. Doesn't work quite so well for old people, who have poorer blood circulation (I do now feel the cold more) & are usually less active.

Still not got the heating on, usually wait til the 1 November but its been quite mild so far so may go for Dec 1.

I am fortunate to live in a modern house that is very well-insulated.

And you are right about the older gen, my poor old mum has her heat blasting to 25, but she sits around doing nothing all day. I think I am off-setting her carbon usage.

I get the feeling he politics through focus group responses. Maybe that's not fair, but he seems out of touch with what you'd expect from a leader of Labour (e.g. initially banning his MPs form supporting unions campaigning for fair wages, now criticising environmental protestors whilst also calling for more authoritarian police response). It's as if someone has told him these are the stances that will appeal to the most people, rather than leading according to Labour values.

I still like the idea of better though!

He's very much pro-JSO, pointing out that they are being very effective in stimulating debate right now, in an idiotic world where the majority of us won't listen to the UN, the scientists, the experts, because we're too flaccid and selfish to make even the smallest superficial sacrifice to save our children's lives.

As you say, it can be done - would mean stripping back if other renovations not already in progress, but when we renovated my house (19thC farmhouse with thick solid stone walls, slate roof & no foundations) we used something similar to this -

Wanted to put sheeps' wool into the attic, but it was prohibitively expensive, so stuck with conventional stuff.

More age-ism.

Just for balance, this "poor old mum" has her heating at 14C during the day, 18C in the evenings, & is extremly active during most daylight hours apart from when sitting at laptop furiously pounding out posts on TWTD, which generates a fair bit of heat in its own right anyway

It's an irrelevance to climate change (global warming is a non-specific term).

The point is to raise the awareness of the issues, not reduced the carbon emitted on the 9th November 2022.

The fact you've not grasped this simply highlights the need for more such protests.
