As a young sports journalist, I met Motty at an England get-together press day at Bisham Abbey in the 70s. Made time to talk to me with career tips and info. Lovely man and a worthy successor to David Coleman and his generation. RIP Motty.

Used to listen to him on the radio commentary before he switched to TV. Sad to hear. Great guy with local connections to the county.

Been thinking that with this, and the departure of Dickie Davies a few days again, by my reckoning the only voices left that I would associate with sports coverage in my formative years in the eighties are Barry Davies and Des Lynam

Brian Moore, Peter Alliss, Richie Benaud, Peter O'Sullevan, Dan Maskell, Ted Lowe, Eddie Waring, Sid Waddell, Frank Bough, Murray Walker, and God knows how many others, all gone.

Ouch, that list of those who have gone is scary when you put them altogether. Some amazing personalities there.

Really sad news, I would add Jimmy Armfield to your list of iconic eighties voices. He and Motty are my recollections of Sir Bob's assaults on Europe via a little white earpiece and a transistor radio by the bed.

It's 106 miles to Portman Road, we've got a full tank of gas, half a round of Port Salut, it's dark... and we're wearing blue tinted sunglasses.

Oh yes, the old Sport on 2 crowd - Peter Jones, Bryon Butler, and, er, I suppose there was Stuart Hall as well, but, well, you know...

I met John Motson at the Daily Express 5 -a-side in London https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Five-a-Sides_(England)
Can't remember if it was the year we won but we had a good chat, we asked him if he was a Town fan - he smiled and said he had to be impartial :)
He'll be missed.

He really was the voice of football for me.

A great commentator and voice, high quality commentary and insights throughout his career.

The sheepskin coat was the stuff of legends.

RIP indeed.

To clarify: The Hereford-Newcastle match was not his first TV game, he’d been providing commentaries for Match of the Day for a couple of months prior to that, but it was the game which made his name.

From the Ipswich Town Match of the Day video, a handful of great Motty commentaries:

March 1977: Arsenal 1 Ipswich 4 “Brian Talbot having a marvellous match”

March 1978: Millwall 1 Ipswich 6 “Burley tries a shot…Oh! He hit it from way out, he caught the goalkeeper by surprise….”

November 1979: Ipswich 3 Southampton 1 “Ipswich are playing some crisp football”

May 1981: “They chased 3 trophies, they missed out on 2. But they’ve finished up with 1.”

May 1982: Ipswich 3 Middlesbrough 1 “If you want to call it a continental goal, Muhren won’t mind.”

October 1982: Ipswich 1 Liverpool 0 “And D’Avray. IT’S THERE!”

April 1984: Liverpool 2 Ipswich 2 “Well, we’re having a treat today.”

October 1992: Ipswich 4 Leeds 2 “Oh how about that. A Yorkshireman scores against Leeds.”

Perhaps his ultimate link to Suffolk is that his preferred sheepskin coat manufacturer were Bungay based firm Nursey - https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-suffolk-30850850

You can put that in your news article if you like Phil.

The original firm closed in 2015 but the name lives on, without the coat making.

John Arlott the greatest of all.

We were certainly lucky to have Motty and Barry Davis around at the same time.

Barry Davies' autobiography is a very bitter read, I'm afraid, bemoaning the fact that Motson overtook him to be the head BBC commentator, and so got the big games, FA Cup and World Cup Finals.

But then again, Barry got to do the Olympics and Wimbledon. And most importantly of all...
