Colin released by Birmingham 17:28 - May 23 with 4597 viewsGaryHaddock1967

Birmingham released their retained list today and they’re releasing Maxime Colin. Surely could do a lot worse than him on a free as a right back option. Definitely need healthy competition for Clarke

Poll: Also would you rather?

Harlee Dean if he could stay fit would be good signing on a free too IMO. Probably a risk now, 3 calf injuries over the last season or so but a decent player at this level

I definitely like the look of him but obviously he would be the first person to really break the wage structure as he’s on 32k a week at Birmingham compared to colin who is only on 9k. Still a very good central defensive edition

Can't see us getting a new right back, we only extended Donacien's contract like a month ago.

Also, would be expensive wage-wise for a reserve right back (even if he fancied the role). Rather keep our wage-budget for something more crucial than marginally improving the quality of a squad player.

What's Donacien done to be ignored as the competition for Clarke? For once, I think we're pretty well covered at RB.

It's 106 miles to Portman Road, we've got a full tank of gas, half a round of Port Salut, it's dark... and we're wearing blue tinted sunglasses.

Misleading thread title.

There's only one person in football called Colin - and he's not called Colin.

I can't see us spending decent money on back up p.layers. Anyone we spend good money on in transfers and wages will be seen as first team ready a la Clarke, Broadhead and Hirst in January. Too many people seem to think it will be easy to offload 'unwanted' players too.

Also. Can't remember his name. But I liked the look of the young right back who played in the trophy games.

Harlee Davidson from the US of A surely. Bags of pace and a bloody good engine.

We have no village green, or a shop. It's very, very quiet. I can walk to the pub.

Bit laid back for McKenna's style, one might think?

Agbaje. He won academy player of the year and impressed in his loan move at Yeovil.

Weirdly enough I can. Not so much because of any slight on Donacien but more because of the need for wider cover that Clarke’s versatility allows. Can see the go to replacement being a new right back and Clarke moving to centre back or left back as and when required.

Plenty have been saying of the need for a left sided CB,not sure that’s needed as Burgess deserves his go.

Why wheel in yet another old player for a position we already have cover for in a defence that was as tight as a gnats rear end? One I might add that’s been binned by a competitor for a reason,

If we bring in anyone, they need to be an upgrade on what we have or a specific position where we are lacking like a true number nine (Hirst))

You'd say that about Woolf if he was playing anywhere else wouldn't you? Don't see it happening regardless. Too many injuries recently to be worth the risk I'd think

No but there where sensible posters saying we need another CB and the release of Keogh makes them correct .

Donacien is competition for Clarke.

Of course, we’ll still try to get on the front foot as much as possible. But we’re going to need our better defensive players much more next season as we’ll need to defend more. Credit to our overall play and threat that kept sides from committing forward, but we were largely defending on Easy Mode in League One.

So “lesser” players like Donacien, Burgess and maybe Leigh could become more important even with the step up in opposition quality.

Did impress.

Suffered a nasty injury though towards the end, required surgery I believe.

Sure his deal expires this summer and haven't seen whether he will remain or released though.

Yes. They were specifically mentioning Burgess when talking about getting a new CB.

On the basis that our main transfer business will be about improving the first team rather than incrementally improving our squad players, it's probably true that Burgess is near the top of our list for replacement.

Agree that Clarke's longer term future might well be in the middle, he's got all of the attributes.

Davis / Leigh / Clarke
Woolf / Clarke
Burgess / Edmundson
Clarke / Donacien

We're pretty well set defensively across those 7 despite Keogh and KVY moving on. You could probably add Ball to that conversation too. Wouldn't surprise me if we see another addition there but I would be surprised if it's an out and out central defender, unless someone moved on.

All depends how he gets on doesn't it?

18 months ago. He was the backup to Edmundson.
Then he came in and did OK.
Got turned inside out whenever a player ran at him down his right side.

He vastly improved however.

But we are heading into the championship. Better quality opponents weekly. Can he step up or is he a solid backup to a better more mobile lcb.

All three got a mention actually by different posters but none was really writing anyone off just felt we needed another one and I agreed .
