We have bid 3.5m for Ellis Simms and were close to getting Rak-Sakyi on loan for the season.

Nathan Broadhead was from a PL club, Harry Clarke was from a PL club, Leif Davis was from a PL club - combined fee for all 3 was around £3.5M

Ellis Simms is not worth that alone, like I said - a good player, but would need to be at a sensible price.

Strikers always cost more, especially when they are 6'3, mobile and know where the goal is.

The fee seems very realistic for him, is only 22 and a player who has scored goals wherever he has been

Probably smaller fee with add on's up to £3.5m.

7 goals and 2 assists in 17 championship games last is a fairly good return is it not? Given, It's not a massive amount of games to judge him on but he's only just stepped up to that level.

It’s a fairly decent return - but not £3.5M worth of return!

They do always cost more - that is true.

He’s not mobile at all, in fact that was Sunderland fans assessment of him - he needed a player close to him due to his lack of mobility - and that was the similar assessment from Everton fans.

Did have a solid return in his short time at Sunderland, but far far from a £3.5M player.

£1M-£1.5M is that absolute cap I’d be paying for him.

Say something somewhere a while ago that the Broadhead fee would head up towards 3m with all the top-ups.

Think you are little out of touch on values. Remind me how much, in recent years, EPL clubs have compensated us for stealing academy players.

You aren't going to find a 22-year-old striker with any track record of scoring goals in the Championship for less than £3m.

He looks mobile when he gets on the ball, good dribbler and can use his body well

Just think you are miles out on values of young English forwards personally

I’m not saying a Champ track record is a necessity, but when they don’t have that pedigree I would like to think we are a bit smarter than that.

In the last couple of seasons player like Viktor Gyökeres and Joel Piroe have moved to Championship clubs for less than £1.5M - at 23 y.o and 21y.o respectively.

I still think we must be sensible with our finances, and in my opinion £3.5M for Simms would not be sensible business.

He has a very similar pedigree to Broadhead - almost literally the same for the most part...and it's a known fact that young english strikers carry a big premium.
I am not sure what your point is tbh.
Brentford paid £5m (plus add ons up to £10m) for a 24 year old Ivan Toney 3 years ago and he had never played above League One level. That seems to have worked out OK (apart from the gambling).

I hope we're not going to point to Gyokeres and Piroe as the going rate for top Championship strikers all Summer.

Gyokeres signed for Coventry off the back of a season as an impact substitute for a mid-table Championship team. He'd scored 3 goals across 19 appearances for Coventry on loan, after 0 in 11 for Swansea. In senior football, Piroe had 3 goals from 29 Eredivisie appearances.

Every club is going to have transfers like that, where they've managed to catch lightning in a bottle and found a superstar at a budget price.

Has limited PL experience if we are being truthful - not returned more than 9 goals in a season and we are saying £3.5M isn’t crazy money - of course it is.

Don’t think he’s a bad player, but £3.5M is daft.
[Post edited 14 Jun 2023 11:44]

It's really not daft money for a 22 year old who is good enough to start regularly in the Championship and deemed good enough for decent minutes in the Prem as well. What sort of fee do you think would be reasonable for a player like Simms? Personally I think it'd be a good bit of business at that kind of money.

A younger Freddie then, as Ladapo was the hold up man for Chappers et al, and still grabbed himself 10+ goals as well.

I don't see how anyone is complaining about this signing to be quite honest

just to add even more perspective, we paid £1.5m for Paul Taylor 11 years ago so it's not unreasonable to be paying £3.5m for a younger striker with a much higher ceiling and far better pedigree than that tw4t...

We are buying Premier League club players for the Championship.

While I agree that the money quoted isn't 'bonkers' I always find it a bit off-putting and disingenuous people claiming the academy players we're buying are 'Premier league players', a vast majority of these players find their level in the Championship and below.
