He's moved to Luton now. Not sure what people are expecting us to pay , for a striker that is expected to fire us to the Premier League? Given thst they will be on an approx 3 year deal, you'd think.....Todays market, its going to be 5million plus. Which is a gamble that we might need to take. We saw how some of our "adequate for L1" players, fell by the wayside, as the season progressed last year.. Is it wise to bring in an "adequate" striker or two, at 2-3 million a pop? Or are we better off pushing the boat out for a better quality striker?..Id say the latter, if it's doable.

| 4 mill bid rejected on 17:46 - Jun 27 by JDB23 | Yeah very surprised that’s been rejected unless it’s been structured a certain way. I can’t see anyone wanting to pay over £4m for Simms, maybe one we park for now and revisit later when Everton realise they won’t get a much better deal anywhere else. |
I can. If he would have stayed at Sunderland he probably would've hit about 18-20 goals for them. If you want to sign a quality striker at Championship level, especially one who is 22 years old and have so much room to develop. That is how much he will cost.

Maybe, but I'm still not sure it's good value. As I said look at last seasons top scorers, only 3 of the top 15 cost their respective clubs more than about £2.5m. I'd rather we used a good scouting network to try to unearth some gems than start spending irresponsibly in our first season back at Champ level when it could all backfire.

I'm not sure this is where we are at the moment. The powers that be at the club want to move us forward as quickly as possible and we also need to do that to keep hold of McKenna. You're going to have a stressful season if you're worried about "spending irresponsibly". Unearthing hidden gems is fabulous but they go wrong more frequently than they go right. SB

Davis. Broadhead. Taylor. All around that 1.5 upfront fee aren't they. Perhaps that's our financial aim to be able to work within ffp.

Derby County wanted to move forward as quickly as possible too, that went well. If we can afford to spend £5m and have that player flop and it not hurt us then go for it, but I'd be surprised if that is the case. Big money signings can go wrong just as much as hidden gems, only it costs you more financially. We're not in league 1 any more, we're not going to get promotion by outspending everyone, we need to be clever about it and as my point illustrated, you can bring in players who can achieve success without blowing the bank. We all love the current ownership and management but it does feel like people have lost their sense of where football is at currently and what has happened to a number of clubs. Who knows what could happen in the next few years, I'd hate to see us in trouble because we got carried away.

Strikers traditionally carry a premium - especially promising young english strikers and so I think we'd do very well to get a top end champ striker for anywhere near £1.5m. The Broadhead deal looks especially good although that is tempered by his injury record tbf.

People haven't lost their sense of where football is and what can happen, it's just that the context has changed entirely for the club. A pension fund is unlikely to want to build slowly in the way you describe and we are unlikely to hold onto McKenna doing that. I'm not convinced that big money signings go wrong as much as hidden gems but I don't have data to back that up. There are far more hidden gem type gambles so that likely skews the perception somewhat. I'd hate us to get into trouble in a few years as well and I'm not advocating reckless spending or paying over the odds but it's likely quite a bit of money will be thrown around over the next season or two so probably best not to lose sleep over it. To be honest mate, I think your MaySixth tribute is possibly even more tragic than your Frimmers one.

Be interesting to see how much Leicester would want for him, if they don't keep him... Wasn't it a reported 7m buy clause, on Blackburns loan to buy deal with Hirst...Not saying he's worth anywhere near that, btw. But can't see him coming here for peanuts. Probably 3-3.5 mil.. (Some are saying 2m, but I think it to be more than that)..And we might need an upgrade on Hirst, Ladapo, from last season... I can see us paying a large fee, for an upgrade on what we had last season.... But wouldn't be shocked either way, if it did or didn't get done..

Some fair points in there. What I would say is Simms perfectly fits this transfer set up we had. He’s young, he’s got plenty of room to improve but also will contribute now, been schooled through a top academy and has possibility for a huge sell on should this transfer work. If he scores us the goals to push us forward. He will be worth every Penny. That’s the risk with strikers I guess

| 4 mill bid rejected on 17:55 - Jun 27 by StokieBlue | It's a lot of money, however he's playing for a PL team, is still relatively young, scored in the Champ last season and played some matches in the PL. Given 1.5m for Taylor in the final year of his contract, what do we think is a realistic fee? I think there might be a bit of mental scaring still for supporters from the ME days when there was no money and when things were perhaps cheaper. SB [Post edited 27 Jun 2023 17:58]

I think it's very hard to gauge what sort of price is 'fair'. Everton are probably in their right to point to him getting 7 in 17 at Sunderland and suggesting he's possibly a 20 goal a season man in the Championship. If achieved, those sort of players, with his profile, aged 22 - you see go for the £20m+ fees. I had heard that a couple of our key targets are proving to more expensive than we thought they would be.
