I get she's a Daily Heil right-wing shill, but apart from this being a classic from their playbook it does raise a really interesting question about using child poverty as political currency doesn't it?

Having seen kids who go hungry regularly, it seems a bit odd to do the whole "these barges are too luxurious/not punishing enough" routine whilst highlighting one of the biggest sources of shame caused by the government's approach.

Are we not talking about 4.2 million Brits living in food poverty while some migrants dare to eat cornflakes?

No, we're talking about shareholders potential profits being stuck in a bowl and having milk poured over them.

I've been a busy bunny so I have only just seen the replies - and I can't be arsed to reply to them all.

Yes I actually agree, to me the barge made no sense as in effect it holds a day of small boats, quite frankly it's ridiculous.

Same with Rwanda, I'm not entirely against shoving people there, to be honest I wouldn't mind going there for a bit of R & R myself. The issue is the ridiculously small numbers the scheme can accommodate. It's not worth the effort.

The boat and Rwanda are political posturing to the foaming mouthed red wall and the South East blue rinsed

My annoyance is with the people who have so little going on in their life that they feel the need to protest that it isn't adequate accommodation. I mean, where is this all going to end?

I take on the comments about fire but no one raises concern when I go from Harwich to The Hook.

Lets face it, if you were destitute you couldn't afford to pay a people smuggler and if you were in danger of your life that floating home would be a Godsend

We are paying France a fortune to stop the boats but every boat that leaves France is a blessing to them, it's a crazy situation.

The Home Office are useless and even when they try and deport someone a £Lawyer£ will get in the way.

Now I know you and others will think I am insane but I tend to think outside the box - and I get things done!

I would look at getting a worldwide fund to purchase some unused land, maybe some corner of Africa or the like, and build a new country for all refugees. A sort of Israel without the roof knocking bombs.

When you go from Harwich to Hook you do so on a vessel that has a very specific capacity for survival craft. Passenger numbers can NEVER exceed this number. Ever. It would be a massive problem if they did that.

It’s completely different from a barge that was built for a certain occupancy but then doubled overnight.

I see the barge is flagged under what is known as a flag of convenience.

I'm interested in the argument, I take on board expert witnesses.

When I go to The Hook I am often doubled up with Artsbossbeard, in fact I would imagine our accommodation is far smaller than the floating refugee thing, in fact you couldn't swing a cat - although there is plenty of space in the mainstream vessel.

Also, the vessel won't be 200 miles in the drink, it will be close to harbour.

My argument isn't that UK.gov is doing a great job with this particular crisis, it's just that I think the boat thing is not a problem - albeit ridiculous.

I'm starting to think some people can't read.

I suppose another way of looking at it is that if people make too much of the fact that the barge is not acceptable, it's playing into the Government narrative that they are putting in place measures which will put off migrants from crossing.

The whole thing is political and it's quite clever.

UK.Gov have put people up in a half decent place of living but they completely know that it's going to get condemned by the activists.

But........ what the rank and file will see is that immigrants are being fed and watered free of charge with a superlative breakfast buffet.

It's very clever really, it will make people vote blue because they are disgusted that Johnny Foreigner is getting fed while the people who were at war in the countries of the immigrants are in prison or on the streets.

That's not to say that that this isn't a real issue.

It's war games, Tory HQ know they have lost but there is a sprinkle of hope recently so they will do anything they can.

What is happening is a side issue. Both Tory and Labour aren't interested in resolving things, all they want is your tick on the paper

You think the boat thing isn’t a problem because you’ve been on a spacious ferry that will never sail over capacity. This barge is over capacity. It’s a safety issue.

It’s flagged under a flag of convenience. They could probably have trebled the capacity and the flag wouldn’t have been fussed.

Comparing a passenger ferry to a barge is ridiculous.

Ok, I'll bite.

Personally I think it's a bit ridiculous to summon a boat to hold 500 people when there are the same number coming over every day, it doesn't make any sense to me. 100 boats might work but one is quite frankly ridiculous.

However, I don't understand in any shape or form why the accommodation is deemed by some as unacceptable for people who have supposedly fled their country in fear of death. It's safe and warm and they are getting fed and watered while Mr and Mrs normal are having panic attacks every time the postman arrives with another bill.

I appreciate that some people just want to moan about everything UK.com does but if this is where we are at then you've run out of material baby.

Just to add to Lucan’s post all they have done to this facility is remove the single beds (oil workers will put up with spartan accommodation but like most people like their privacy) and replace them with bunk beds. The potential risk from delayed escape in the event of a fire or emergency due to extra occupancy is debatable - it will need to be practiced at some point anyway as a legal requirement. For all our world class H & S and building regs. we still get it wrong anyway (Grenfell is the obvious one that springs to mind) and this subjective view of fire safety is being used by those who have a differing agenda to the government.

Nearly 40 years in the RN.

Other the obvious experience of living and working afloat during that time I have worked with the Naval Authority who look after all types of certification (stability, escape & evacuation, explosives as well as fire etc). This includes reviewing the above for vessels in build and docking periods with additional people onboard and with key systems unavailable (but normally replaced with a temporary alternative).

I’m not saying I’m an expert in the maritime area by any case but I do know that deviation from the normal relies on a lot of subjective expert opinion which doesn’t always withstand the test of time.

What sort of health and safety, firefighting training did you and your colleagues go through? Seems to me oil workers will have been trained in these areas where migrants won’t. Plus the oil workers will be working shifts so the true capacity at anyone time for them will be further reduced.

I very much doubt the fire services are exercising an agenda against the government. There’s nothing at all wrong with using temporary accommodation like this (or barracks, or whatever), but we’re falling well short of the standards we should hold if we’re ignoring fire safety advice. Grenfell should be an example, not an excuse for repeating the same mistakes.

But have the FBU actually been on the boat to declare that it is safe or unsafe? I have to go through a number of Fire Risk Assessments on a weekly basis, and even when we have desktop surveys done for refurbs and the like by the time it is finished the fire officer will still come out and make further changes.

Unless they have full boat blueprints then they are surely just making an educated guess, opposed to being able to stand it up

From the FBU FB page...

"In response to yet another sign of the Labour party's contempt under the Starmer regime for the union movement that founded it, the north-east region of the Fire Brigades Union (FBU) has written to the party's MPs notifying them that it will end all campaigning for and involvement with Labour because of the party's abuse of a senior elected FBU official in the region - and its continuing assault on socialist party members.
The unnamed official with a longstanding record of campaigning for the party and its candidates has, according to the union, been targeted by Labour for liking social media posts expressing socialist values - and the union demands support and solidarity from the MPs it has supported in the past and warns them that further action is still being decided"
