I get she's a Daily Heil right-wing shill, but apart from this being a classic from their playbook it does raise a really interesting question about using child poverty as political currency doesn't it?

Having seen kids who go hungry regularly, it seems a bit odd to do the whole "these barges are too luxurious/not punishing enough" routine whilst highlighting one of the biggest sources of shame caused by the government's approach.

I'll admit that I thought her tweet wasn't as bad as everyone else seems to reckon. She was making a point in the style of sh1thead Lee and reminding him that these are real lives at stake. Yes it was in bad taste and yes she's got lots else wrong previously.

Me too, and those in the right wing press calling it out don't give a fig about the safety of asylum seekers. But it takes the heat off Anderson.

I didn't think the tweet was out of order, not sure why anyone would.

Dianne Abbott is an absolute cretin but the tweet was not offensive IMHO

I agree except with the comment about Diane Abbott!

All MPs make mistakes but hers get magnified and it follows a pattern where Black and Asian women MPs get a disproportionate amount of abuse online, and in Abbott's case in the media.

Just look at the sort of things she has to put up with.

Even before this, I was not convinced that the barge would ever get up to full capacity, but that's not the point of the barge.

If there are fire safety issues, they will need to be taken into account, and that may well limit capacity.

But from the Government's point of view, far better to claim two-to-a-room to make it seem the barge is more cost effective than hotels. The following suggests the saving with two-to-a-room is only £10 a day which would disappear with one-to-a-room.

There are two messages that the government is trying to get out; firstly your accommodation is going to be basic if you decide to come to our country and secondly we are trying to save taxpayers’ money.

Whether either actually make any sense is another matter but that is politics for you.

It's almost as if some 'Friends of the Tories' are making huge amounts of money out of this, as with PPE.

Still, thanks to the thickos those profiteering will not face the scrutiny of the EU. Having their offshore accounts exposed and taxed properly. Whatever next ?

Though I do wonder how much of this largesse finds its way to the thickos, (those that do not hold millions in offshore accounts that is). I won't be through some now forgotten levelling up, that's for sure.

And for my part, I am fairly indifferent to what is happening. It doesn't affect my life any more than it does almost everyone else. But I must say the sight of righties foaming at the mouth, as yet again 'their betters' f ck things up is one of life's great delights, currently.

"Small boats week" is not ending well for the Government with the 100,000th person to cross the channel, the removal of people from the barge, Thursday seeing the highest number of arrivals this year, and the following reported from the Guardian.

"The Home Office is preparing for a large number of small boat arrivals over the next few days and has issued an appeal for contractor staff from across the country to work at Manston processing centre in Kent even if they are not rostered to work, the Guardian understands.

Government sources have confirmed a high number of crossings are likely in the next few days. Weather conditions on Friday night are thought to be particularly favourable."

The very strange thing is that Sunak has been away this week, leaving those behind to run amok. It's almost as if he didn't really want to have anything to do with it, but it will be him left to pick up the consequences.

Of course no one saw the possibility that when the UK took itself out of the mechanism that provided for their return, it might signal a free for all. On the basis that once here it would be hard to remove them.

Actually folk did. The dangers of leaving the Dublin Accord were well documented.

It's rather as if the righties cunning plan' to reduce shoplifting was to remove any sanction from those caught and instead replace it with a polite request to hand back what they had taken. Mrs May even had vans touring round with the same message re migration.

Not too bright these thickos, are they ?

I've also heard it reported that Robert Jenrick, in an interview this week, stated that the government didn't want to speed up the processing of asylum claims because that would be a draw for those seeking to come to the UK.

Further evidence of twisted logic.

Rather than give prominence to the barge fiasco, the Express headline is about doctors striking to bring down the Tories, and the Mail leads with an attack on the other group it despises, trans people.

Is that true? I can’t find anything in this story and hadn’t heard it before.

The UK has agreed to fund a detention centre in France which is entirely different but I can’t see any proposals from the French government offering to build a refugee processing centre for the UK in France.

Happy to be corrected.

First they came for the migrants, and I did not speak out—because I was not a migrant.

Then they came for the junior doctors, and I did not speak out—because I was not a junior doctor.

Then they came for the trans people, and I did not speak out—because I was not a trans person.

Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.
