We see a number of occasions where a team has been blown away in an away fixture and the fans have demanded that they are compensated for their trouble - personally I think that is a nonsense argument, but you hear it...

In this case you could see merit in that sort of thing - it would not be fair for it to come out of the hosting club's coffers - otherwise all those clubs in places with worse weather would soon be out of business - but if a fixture is postponed at this late stage then some sort of fans fund could be used to compensate the traveller.

Devil in the detail of course, both in terms of what circumstances would qualify for such a payout, who administers the payments, where does the cash come from etc (Sky maybe? hahaha) but it would seem a reasonable scheme - one for the football regulator...

and perhaps take heed of the EAs flood alert (flooding expected but no threat to life)

Flood alerts are two a penny. There is still no flood warning for area around the stadium.

Flood Advisory: Be Aware: An Flood Advisory is issued when a specific weather event that is forecast to occur may become a nuisance. A Flood Advisory is issued when flooding is not expected to be bad enough to issue a warning.

Indeed!

A good few years ago I went to see Southampton v Crewe in the FA Cup at the Dell with two chums. One was Crewe, one was Saints and I was the only one with a car and who could drive. I just went for a laugh, as we did to each others games in those days - including the ITFC/Crewe 6-4 rush goalie game..

It was freezing, snow and ice on the ground and the radio said the game was on. Still on when we got there. Still on at 2pm as we lunched in the pub. At 2.30 my buddy said ‘hang on, the fans are walking the wrong way!’. They’d postponed it with 45mins to go. It was staged I think the following Tuesday eve - and I still drove them down! It was a terrible game, but we had a laugh. Ahh, the things we do for football.

There is a long winded point to this tale. This was in about 1996. So over 25 years on, nothing has been learned. Football supporters are still treated abominably at times.

Was fine earlier, so what more could they do?

Given there were pictures of the river lapping at the top like a well poured pint hours ago and it was still p£ssing down, I really don’t think it needed too many brain cells to work out what would happen next.

I’ve not been caught out by a late postponement, but have been at abandoned matches. The last was Man City away in the autumn of 2000, which was called off after about 20 minutes. It was like a monsoon that night. That was the second time in relatively quick succession we had a game abandoned at Man City. There was one in about 94/95 for heavy rain too.

Disgraceful.

Obvious that this was a safety concern all day and they allow people to risk life and limb getting all the way there only to have to turn around again.

Beyond piss poor. Safe journey home blues and hope any travel costs are recompensed.

Quite.

Football fans are always going to turn up. Even if we know deep down the game isn’t going to be played. Sometimes that decision needs to be taken out of our hands. Ideally, as early as possible.

Poor in the extreme. I thought under these circumstances a local ref was normally called to make a pitch inspection. Whether it was to do with Sky or Rotherham to allow supporters to travel in such atrocious conditions risking life and limb is downright bad. But knowing how those that run the leagues operate they won't do anything about it. Whatever tv station is involved with football the whole situation is total garbage. Fans are made to travel far and wide a stupid o-clock just to fit in with them. As for these semi finals and finals all being played at Wembley, again rediculous if two teams based up North are in such a game, all done to suit the Wembley coffers. The North is always complaining about London and the South getting everything whilst they get nowt as they say. Why not build a similar type stadium in the Midlands or up North or use Old Trafford or the Etihad as long as Utd or City aren't involved.

Yep I said last night in a thread that i hope if they call it off late they'll compensate the fans who travelled, it didn't need to come to this, such an obvious and easy call to make purely on the forecast therefore travel conditions.

Oh, Sky, of course, silly me..

Unless they’ve changed the rules since I was made aware of them, you can’t call a match off based upon a weather forecast, only when the pitch is actually unplayable (or some other safety threshold is crossed)

Otherwise you’d end up with matches called off, only for the forecast to prove incorrect and playable pitches standing empty.

Not saying the situation can’t be improved, but that is how I understand it

Plus most people over 20 know that flooding in downstream places like Rotherham occurs because of the volume of water that entered, and is still entering the river miles upstream from water running off fields and hills into the river's tributaries, so it's completely predictable that when it reaches the lowland twns/cities hours later, the river level there will rise hugely.

Years ago I was on a minibus on the M6 heading to a game somewhere, might have been Stoke, and the snow was getting heavier. Was at the time when Town had their own coach, unmistakable with a big white horse painted on the side. Only way of knowing whether the game was off was listening to the radio and I think we were round about Stafford when we heard it was off. Then someone at the back on the offside of the minibus said I did wonder why the team coach was going the other way earlier.

Not sure how helpful that would have been really and don't think it would have been responsible to put people in limbo like that. What definitely isn't responsible is Rotherham putting out a statement about the pitch, and only the pitch, which acted as a green light for people to travel.

As others have said really not good for people to make a potentially dangerous journey then call it off and make them go back in worsening conditions.

The logical solution is to grab a hotel for the night and play it at 3pm tomorrow. But thats far too sensible for the football authorities to cope with.

As you used that phrase rather than just saying something like "in difficult conditions" I was genuinely interested in how far, figuratively, you would go to get to a match. A while ago I had a long phase when if Town were playing, I had to be there. A compulsion you could call it. Then there was a second replay at Portman Road one night in wintry weather and we were on the A12 heading there and my friend's car skidded on ice, fortunately came to a halt without hitting anything but we decided not to continue, the freezing conditions would only get worse, and that it was not worth "Risking life and limb" to see the game, however compelled it felt to. Just wondered what you would have done.

Agree. Given how events were unfolding, this is an obvious decision that could and should have been made a lot earlier. I’ll be interested to hear what the football clubs, particularly RUFC whose responsibility I presume it is to stage the game, have to say about it.

Besides an explanation, the supporters who’ve travelled deserve some recompense for what this shambles has cost them.

Utter shambles ! From where I am the two main routes were closed due to flooding which meant a drive down several small B roads through over 20 floods across the road , 2 or 3 quite deep , to find out when I am two hours from home that the match has just been called off.

I don’t disagree with this decision on safety grounds but there was comment that the pitch inspection was at 5pm as early as this morning , why so late for the pitch inspection given the weather we have had for 24 hours , the accuracy of weather forecasts ( up to 120mm forecast in Rotherham for the period from midday today to midday tomorrow…) and that the majority of Our fans have to travel over 3 hours . Down to Sky!

As others have said , if this wasnt on Sky , the decision would have been taken this morning , but it seems the fans don’t matter , we have incurred cost , our safety put at risk and all for nothing.

No wonder songs about sky being f n crap are heard so often.

Really annoyed with how this been handled!

Probably not dissimilar to you when I was much younger. I remember getting in my car one boxing day to drive to Leicester (around 95-96?) and got to somewhere between Bury and Newmarket before giving up due to snow.

The game was called off by the time I reached home.

These days, I'm much more of an armchair and fairweather fan and would've sacked it off this morning regardless.

In our case the game we were going to did go ahead so we did miss it and, who knows, we might have got there safely if we had continued, but never regretted not taking the risk.
