Dropping out of top 2 17:33 - Nov 14 with 8555 viewsFrimleyBlue

Genuine question.

There's been a fair few posts about entitlement amongst town fans.

But genuinely.. when would it be OK to be disappointed if we dropped out of the top 2 places.

I never thought we'd get anywhere near it this season. Top 10 was a hope. So I based most thoughts on that prediction.
But part of me also sees us as we are. Currently top 2. 8 points clear and lovely gap to missing out on automatic.

So when do you pass the stage of being seen as entitled for changing your expectations from a top 10 finish to one where we've made the gap due to our performances so we should finish top 2...

I would hate it if we dropped out of the top 2 as the forum would be flooded with even more terrible hot takes than usual on a game day

Plenty of Leeds fans say on the social media are claiming the promotion is theirs and our wheels will come off soon.

Fascinating how they can predict the future.

When we lose three on the trot, and team(s) below us win each of theirs to overtake, then I'd be disappointed we'd lost 3 on the trot... but that possibly isn't what you were after, as I think it maybe doesn't fit the slant you were going for?

If we're still top two once we've got December out of the way, I think that's the point at which I'll become disappointed if we drop out.

Until now I've always had in mind that we've got December to come, and that it's ITFC that we're dealing with.

I think he's struggling to differentiate between people being hopeful and optimistic with being entitled. Kind of like if someone was more focussed on santa claus being morbidly obese rather than a cheery f***er who doles out gifts.

For me January 21st....
We will have played both Leeds and Leicester twice and if we are still top 2 after that I'd fancy our chances and be disappointed if we failed after that.

Let's imagine this is a genuine question for a moment.

It's not whether it's ok to feel disappointed that's the issue; it's how...er...certain people react to that disappointment.

Reactionary, emotionally-illiterate tantrums and baseless hot-takes, coupled with opinions presented as facts with weird degree of confidence ("Burns will not be playing in the Championship" etc) will rightly get short shrift on here.

It's not usually people playing the poster* so reflect on why you might be getting the reaction you do if/when it happens.

*There have been undoubted instances where this has been the case, probably including by myself.

I'm not sure many are feeling entitled to be fair. We all seem to be enjoying it for what it is at the moment.

For what it's worth, I don't think we'll need a dreadful downturn of form. I can imagine that at least two - if not all three - of the relegated teams will be pretty relentless as they progress through the league. We certainly won't maintain that gap between us and third, but it gives us something to fight for.

As you say, beyond expectations. Not sure we need to dwell too much on what may happen, just enjoy what is happening.

I'd have been happy consolidating our place in the Championship. Although it's always possible to get a decent run going and sneak in thE play offs. But after 4 seasons in League One, my priority was to make sure we didn't go back down there.

However, we find ourselves in the top 2 and have been in that position since day one of this campaign. So I will be absolutely devastated if we don't make the automatic places.Which is bloody silly, considering where we have just come from.

If ever there was an example of almost every response playing the man and not the ball, this would be a strong contender.

For me it'll be if we're still in a top 2 spot at the end of February. But expectations do change, I'd have been very happy with mid table at the start of the season but that would be a massive disappointment now. Finishing in the top 6 is now (hopefully) a realistic expectation come the end of the season.

I hope Frimmers takes it all with good humour. He must, otherwise he wouldn't keep trying to outdo himself.

Back to the question. I think I'd be disappointed dropping out of the top 2 (how nuts does that sound?). I don't think I'd have a hissy fit if we did though. We've no right to be where we are as a newly promoted team, but simultaneously we've 100% deserved to be where we are so far. If that makes any sense.

One of my endearing memories of our 2000 Prem season was Burleys response to the success we were having.
Every week, even when we sat in the European qualifying spots, he would say to the media ‘Our plan is to get enough points to avoid relegation’.

I’ve got no idea what he said to the players but it kept fans, media etc grounded, and realistic about where our true expectations should be.
The players were able to play without pressure and were excellent.

You can be disappointed at whichever point you like, just don't be a whiney tw*t about it and be grateful for what we currently are.
