Getting more than a little fed up with the recent fractiousness on here. There seem to be two groups of posters some of whom's main interest in being on here is to have pops at the other. That then leads to someone reporting a post, PMing or emailing me about the other.

Not really sure what to do about it, does seem some posters have unhealthy obsession with others, which is causing the rest of us, especially me a problem. I could ban all those involved on both sides en masse, who I'm sure most other posters could name, but that seems a little draconian and no doubt none of them would feel they had any blame.

Any thoughts? A number of those regularly involved with up arrow this post and tell me I'm right to call this out, as happens every time I make a similar request for the bickering to stop.

This site is always going to be a broad church of people from different backgrounds, ages, genders and views, so not everyone is going to agree with everyone or see everything posted as in the same way and I think there needs to be a bit more tolerance.

But more than anything far less winding up and chipping away at other users, deliberate attempts at subverting other people's threads etc.

I can see the card system descending into utter chaos.
A fairly innocuous yellow card picked up for a petty foul early on, followed by the Bruno Fernandez crew on here screaming blue murder and pestering Phil at 3am for the red card.
I think the introduction of a no-holds barred section, as was suggested earlier in the thread, where differences can be argued out to their full conclusion, without the option of running to teacher is a cracking idea.
Probably wholly unworkable, but a trial run for a week or so would iron out many of the problems between the two groups.

I think Phil is a vastly better official than any I’ve seen in any football match, so can’t envisage any “fairly innocuous yellows” being dished out tbh.

Will a collection of yellows, but no red, still lead to a ban?
When do those yellows get erased?

Revert it back to a football forum, no need to discuss politics etc on a forum specifically created because of football.

Yes there is a football category and general, but it doesn’t stop people and their agendas crossing over.

Some people on here never input anything to do with football, which I struggle to understand why they’re here.

On the latter point, although I've been around since the late 90s, I probably post much more on non-football threads than I do on the football ones. I would guess the reason is that I don't get to that many games and usually don't feel able to offer a useful opinion on much of the football stuff. But I'm here because I want to read about what's going on with the club and spend (virtual) time with other Town fans. However, I am quite happy to contribute to politics and other non-football stuff as that's something I do feel like I can add something to.

Back to the OP, there are a few posters who get away with trolling (two of whom are in this thread), and two or three posters who I am not sure fit the traditional troll mould but almost entirely just post short whatabouterry nonsense on any political thread. The forum would be vastly improved by removing them IMO.

@Phil. Although I’ve been a member of TWTD for many years I rarely post because of the pathetic rancour and deliberate provocation by many posters. Personally, I think you’re far too tolerant. Yellow and red cards or some other naughty step warning would be time consuming and difficult for you to manage, not that you should have to do so. Most of the friction, goading and in-fighting appears in the general section so why not just close it down for a month initially and make this a footy related forum only?

That would mean hundreds of people taking the hit for just a handful who can’t behave though.

Fwiw I found in practice on my old racing forum (though that was much smaller than this place) that the yellow-red card system was a huge time-saver, because once the small handful of serial offenders were weeded out permanently, so were most of the problems.

I fear that Footers has irretrievably spoilt his ballot paper this time, so that won’t work.

When I was at primary school, the teacher used to pull a couple of the ringleaders out of their sniggering little pack at the back and make them sit with the cleverer kids.

The ringleaders hated it, but it worked because their hangers-on lost their role models and weren’t half as gobby without the unhealthy back-up.

That was the early 1970s though, and option B was to give the bad kid a good smacking in front of the whole class. Once they’d sat there snivelling for 20 mins, their hero status waned considerably.

Anyway, hopefully Phil will find this thought-provoking and helpful….

Funnily enough, in primary school, I got "front and backs" which is where you'd get hit several times with the edge of a wooden ruler across your palms and backs of hands... id justifiably received this at age 7 for noticing a mate had drawn two dots in two circles. "Boobs" I was heard to say by Mrs Teacher. Up the front I went for my "good smacking". Did it stop me? Yarblockos.

Thinking on this, Bluesky’s solution is the right one. Three strikes and you are out. Permanently. At the total discretion and judgement of the administrators.

If those banned don’t like it, tough. The interests of the sensible majority come first. People are free to express their views, however odd they might be to others, as long as it’s within the rules of the Board. They can be challenged, but in the right way.

Post as you would expect to be spoken to face to face. Basic curtesy that the majority exercise to get through life. It’s really not a hard concept to grasp but if it is too much for the minority, then maybe X/Twitter is for you.

‘Post as you would expect to be spoken to face to face.’

I think its probably time for a fresh start Phil, there are quite a few younger town fans who are scraed to start to post on TWTD because of the fear of being ridiculed or belittled. This is a shame, as this site is, and will always be the best Ipswich site by a mile. Lose them Phil, and move forward to a new more positive era of supoorting Ipswich.

Ridiculed and belittled? Oh please !
By who? By the people who think they are hard from behind their screen and keyboard?

How many of them would insult you in face? Very few if none. So ignore them, have a laugh and express your views.

Take the 'left' element of this site for example. They are so quick to insult you if you don't share their political views. They wouldn't be quick to insult you in face. All they are 'capable of' is being 'online warriors'. Therefore have a laugh at them.

Football views too. Just have a laugh and don't get worked up over a member of internet forum who can't accept your views.

The main problem is that loads of people 'want to be right' and they can't accept their views/opinions are sometimes wrong. They are too proud to man up and admit they get it wrong. Instead of that they turn to ridicule others.

Politics issue. Probably the biggest cancer and problem of this site. Left wing, right wing..... people are getting mad over it.
Why? What for?

The lefties and their BBC/The Guardian addiction for example. So quick to insult you from behind their screens when you don't share their views. They themselves think they are the ambassadors of decency/honesty/true.
Fine. They can have their views but who has given them a right to lecture or insult others?

Football things too. People are always going to have various views on here but very few of them would be the same in your face.

Feels like a civil war on here at times. Between who? Between the people who support THE SAME FOOTBALL CLUB. It is so bizarre to put it kindly.

I would actually say it was one of the more tolerant times on the forum. Everyone was in the same boat and thus a lot of discussion wasn't too bad. There were of course arguments around covid policy but that was relevant and usually fairly informed.

It's been far worse post-covid.

Oh, the ‘tell it like it is’ defence from someone who gets offended when someone tells it like it is to them.

I’m not sure that anyone will truly eradicate the sniping which goes on here - people are more likely to pick up a yellow card for abusive behaviour online than in real life.

The thing which makes TWTD great is that it’s much more of a community based forum than a mere football forum. People can be very supportive of one another on here and I think that this aspect of this site is taken for granted. If you take away one aspect of TWTD (the general section) than this little community loses something.

One possible way to limit abuse is to have an ‘opening time’ for all posters. New posters or returning posters can only post between 0900-22.00. And if someone needs a ‘talking to’ then they aren’t banned but not allowed to post. If a poster is polite etc then they can post 24/7. Just an idea and it might limit alcohol induced arguments. May be hard to administer though.
