Getting more than a little fed up with the recent fractiousness on here. There seem to be two groups of posters some of whom's main interest in being on here is to have pops at the other. That then leads to someone reporting a post, PMing or emailing me about the other.
Not really sure what to do about it, does seem some posters have unhealthy obsession with others, which is causing the rest of us, especially me a problem. I could ban all those involved on both sides en masse, who I'm sure most other posters could name, but that seems a little draconian and no doubt none of them would feel they had any blame.
Any thoughts? A number of those regularly involved with up arrow this post and tell me I'm right to call this out, as happens every time I make a similar request for the bickering to stop.
This site is always going to be a broad church of people from different backgrounds, ages, genders and views, so not everyone is going to agree with everyone or see everything posted as in the same way and I think there needs to be a bit more tolerance.
But more than anything far less winding up and chipping away at other users, deliberate attempts at subverting other people's threads etc.

The main problem is that loads of people 'want to be right' and they can't accept their views/opinions are sometimes wrong. They are too proud to man up and admit they get it wrong. Instead of that they turn to ridicule others.
Politics issue. Probably the biggest cancer and problem of this site. Left wing, right wing..... people are getting mad over it. Why? What for?
The lefties and their BBC/The Guardian addiction for example. So quick to insult you from behind their screens when you don't share their views. They themselves think they are the ambassadors of decency/honesty/true. Fine. They can have their views but who has given them a right to lecture or insult others?
Football things too. People are always going to have various views on here but very few of them would be the same in your face.
Feels like a civil war on here at times. Between who? Between the people who support THE SAME FOOTBALL CLUB. It is so bizarre to put it kindly.
But Mach, isn't labelling "lefties" in the way that you have undermined the important point you were making. You seem to have called out a "side". It's tricky isn't it?
Distortion becomes somehow pure in its wildness.

The BBC and Guardian are free to link, whereas a lot of other UK new sites aren’t. That’ll probably have something to do with it. And besides, you don’t need to be a “lefty” to look at the BBC or Guardian. There are fewer true ‘lefties’ on here than you realise. Those socialist views have been and continue to be squeezed out of UK politics.
But Mach, isn't labelling "lefties" in the way that you have undermined the important point you were making. You seem to have called out a "side". It's tricky isn't it?
Tricky indeed. That could be taken as embodying the divisiveness Phil talks about…

Thanks for doing an excellent job keeping these boards open and running.
I mostly lurk, and stop reading threads that become too "snipe-y".
I don't know if this has been suggested, but maybe have a group of "unter-moderators" who pass more serious issues to the "uber-moderators". Otherwise the "unters" try to get the two / more sides to bury the hatchet, and not in each others' heads.
"Sorry, I'm not passing this complaint to Phil, but it has been noted and the other party informed of a possible infraction. Please continue to report things you think are important to report, as we aim to keep these boards running and fair and reasonable. Finally, please mention your favourite cheese in future communications as this is also vital for incentivising us untermoderators in our voluntary work".

1) fix the ignore system. It probably works perfectly on thread mode but not on table. It needs to go back further in the thread to see if a branch is being ignored.
2) make it so an admin can force a member to ignore a thread completely.
3) more mods. We don't have that facility and don't know if we'd use it, but I think it needs to be written in.
4) archive of posts. It would remove them from the main index but could still be added to. I like that idea from above.
5) categories. While I love the filter system, it's alien to new users. I could create an option (which may be the default) which shows the categories in a more formal initial index page which is the normal on other forums.
6) megathreads. I want to create threads which kinda mimic categories in a way. Topics that have multiple threads such as individual matches, euros, mckenna contract, the masters, grand national, general election etc. Administering it is key so might not work. I don't want to create more work for us, but being able to link to a thread with match comments might be cool. Being able to block all political threads might be of use to some. The devil in the detail and not discussed with Phil.
7) I like the thumbs. Disabling down arrows would be a mistake I think. Imagine if someone makes an outrageous statement and 50 down arrows and 2 up. If you only recorded up arrows then it would only show that people agreed with it. Perhaps you need to earn the right to down vote, either with a posting history, or ration of some way like using your score.
8) fix the scoring system to include posts that have been historically removed. I have years of posts not included currently. Removed to trim the database .
9) Be able to view the forum for a specific date. I have dates on the system like managerial changes, match dates, player transfers, and would be interesting to see the forum for that date.
[Edit] 10) sin bins. An automated week ban which allows them to view the site logged in, but not able to post.

Apologies if already posted. I think one of the keys to achieve what you want comes from a complete overhaul of the ignore system, and specifically I would turn it on its head and make it so that the offender is forced to ignore threads where a poster with whom they have past adverse history (for which they have been deemed to be more culpable) has posted (an extension of your point 2 below). It seems that the offenders are well known, so just make them ignore each other! Yes, the user experience for that individual may be compromised but that’s their tough luck. At the moment, the innocent party who uses ignore has to compromise their user experience.

I’ve Got a sneaky suspicion, this thread won’t last much longer. 😂
Rather than deleting (which deletes forever 'evidence', which then leads to future rows about what was said) - locking threads earlier to nip burgeoning rows in the bud could also be another useful tactic for Admins.
Or at that point, move them to the aforementioned separate "vent-off" section, where the gladiators involved could fight off until the other/s turn their virtual toes up to join the holy choir invisible in the ether.

With regards to extra moderators, you and Phil can't be on here 24/7 reading every thread. Usually when the sh1t hits the fan it will be via a report of abuse. You or Phil then have to wade through the thread but often it can be an ongoing spat that has run over several threads, snide comments, aggressive downvoting etc and it's sometimes hard for you guys to find the context in the situation.
My suggestion is that you appoint a couple of board members as honorary mods, people like Guthrum, DJR or Churchman (apologies if I have left anyone out) who are a little older and wiser than most on here and have never been involved in a single instance of friction. They will have a general feel of the board and which personalities are causing most of the trouble, or which posters are being baited or provoked into giving a reaction.
So if there is a report of abuse or you are thinking of banning somebody, you could call upon these honorary mods to give you some advice and help.

Oh, the ‘tell it like it is’ defence from someone who gets offended when someone tells it like it is to them.
I’m not sure that anyone will truly eradicate the sniping which goes on here - people are more likely to pick up a yellow card for abusive behaviour online than in real life.
The thing which makes TWTD great is that it’s much more of a community based forum than a mere football forum. People can be very supportive of one another on here and I think that this aspect of this site is taken for granted. If you take away one aspect of TWTD (the general section) than this little community loses something.
One possible way to limit abuse is to have an ‘opening time’ for all posters. New posters or returning posters can only post between 0900-22.00. And if someone needs a ‘talking to’ then they aren’t banned but not allowed to post. If a poster is polite etc then they can post 24/7. Just an idea and it might limit alcohol induced arguments. May be hard to administer though.
Re your last para - that'd be a bit harsh on our many perfectly well-behaved posters who happen to live in the Americas, Aus & NZ!

Totally agree with your third para.

If they move away from the glorious motherland that is FPR, they deserve all they get. And they don’t have to put up with our crappy weather, sewage strewn beaches and 2 week GP queues. I’d ban them for being smug gits. Def info.

Care to define what a practising lefty is in your eyes?
"They break our legs and tell us to be grateful when they offer us crutches."

When i wrote academic i was trying to say that. It is extremely difficult in Britain to live such ideals. The lost dream of the post ww2 society has been ruined/lost. Most pay for education, have property and debt, pay for some health cover etc and practice individualism daily and so are not practising lefties so to speak.
Having lived in Scandinavia and experienced the blend of academic and practice in action with a the social democratic systems that require high taxes but in return there is cradle to grave support available. The making of money is not frowned upon as long as you are not flash and pay taxes. But it is not perfect. But there is less loss of lost dreams.
The UK left (and when i say that i mean the full spectrum of left leaning politics) seems to very much be haunted by the ghosts of the social democratic post ww2 utopia-society that we lost.
I strongly believe we are in a state of late capitalism however i doubt the past is an alternative.

Practising lefties are the people who wear a 'Ramones T Shirt' and can actually name one of their songs.
As Billy Bragg sang. "The revolution is just a T-shirt away."
It is however a great song with the following lines, which chimed with me when actively involved with Labour over the years.
"Jumble sales are organised and pamphlets have been posted Even after closing time there's still parties to be hosted You can be active with the activists Or sleep in with the sleepers While you're waiting for the Great Leap Forwards"
Incidentally, I went to a Billy Bragg concert in aid of Hope not Hate at the Islington Assembly Halls a couple of weeks ago. I have seen him quite a few times over the years, but not for about 30 years, and I found it a rather depressing experience with the audience bringing home to me my age. It made me I think I am right not to go to groups after their prime.

One of the bands I saw at Bearded Theory last weekend was Penetration and it was quite funny to see Pauline Murray complaining about her fear of not being able to get up again as she crouched down to snarl at the audience, true punks are even attitudinal about ageing. So a plea to Starmer:
