Getting more than a little fed up with the recent fractiousness on here. There seem to be two groups of posters some of whom's main interest in being on here is to have pops at the other. That then leads to someone reporting a post, PMing or emailing me about the other.

Not really sure what to do about it, does seem some posters have unhealthy obsession with others, which is causing the rest of us, especially me a problem. I could ban all those involved on both sides en masse, who I'm sure most other posters could name, but that seems a little draconian and no doubt none of them would feel they had any blame.

Any thoughts? A number of those regularly involved with up arrow this post and tell me I'm right to call this out, as happens every time I make a similar request for the bickering to stop.

This site is always going to be a broad church of people from different backgrounds, ages, genders and views, so not everyone is going to agree with everyone or see everything posted as in the same way and I think there needs to be a bit more tolerance.

But more than anything far less winding up and chipping away at other users, deliberate attempts at subverting other people's threads etc.

A couple of suggestions:

1. A clear code of conduct (anyone remember netiquette?) stickied at the top of the board. As you implied, some people aren't even aware that they're part of the problem. Make it clear what the rules and expectations are and dish out appropriate bans if they're not followed.

2. This one's a bit more controversial. Get rid of downvotes (possibly upvotes too). Some people take them way too seriously and get wound up by them. If you disagree with someone then articulate why, not just hammer the downvote button.

Anyway, that's my 2p worth. Thanks for all the hard work Phil, Gav, Mark. Been using this board for nearly 30 years now, on and off, and it's a core part of being a town fan. It would be a shame if it changed too much.

Gav told me a few years ago - thinking about it I'm guessing almost 20 years - how many hits they got and I was absolutely gobsmacked way back then.

A few things from me regarding the software:

1) fix the ignore system. It probably works perfectly on thread mode but not on table. It needs to go back further in the thread to see if a branch is being ignored.

2) make it so an admin can force a member to ignore a thread completely.

3) more mods. We don't have that facility and don't know if we'd use it, but I think it needs to be written in.

4) archive of posts. It would remove them from the main index but could still be added to. I like that idea from above.

5) categories. While I love the filter system, it's alien to new users. I could create an option (which may be the default) which shows the categories in a more formal initial index page which is the normal on other forums.

6) megathreads. I want to create threads which kinda mimic categories in a way. Topics that have multiple threads such as individual matches, euros, mckenna contract, the masters, grand national, general election etc. Administering it is key so might not work. I don't want to create more work for us, but being able to link to a thread with match comments might be cool. Being able to block all political threads might be of use to some. The devil in the detail and not discussed with Phil.

7) I like the thumbs. Disabling down arrows would be a mistake I think. Imagine if someone makes an outrageous statement and 50 down arrows and 2 up. If you only recorded up arrows then it would only show that people agreed with it. Perhaps you need to earn the right to down vote, either with a posting history, or ration of some way like using your score.

8) fix the scoring system to include posts that have been historically removed. I have years of posts not included currently. Removed to trim the database .

9) Be able to view the forum for a specific date. I have dates on the system like managerial changes, match dates, player transfers, and would be interesting to see the forum for that date.

[Edit] 10) sin bins. An automated week ban which allows them to view the site logged in, but not able to post.

One thing I would say about the ignore system as a thread mode user, is if you have got someone on ignore then everything below their comment is then lost also, which means you lose whole chunks of good discussion because the person you have on ignore commented on it

Totally agree with last paragraph.

Think I read further up this thread that some banned posters were given an amnesty to celebrate promotion on here. Whilst that’s a kind gesture, I think it’s allowing this kind of behaviour to continue.

TWTD doesn’t need those kind of posters (the repeating offenders) and it just allows a good thing to get muddied again.

For me clear agreement policy and tougher discipline for those that can’t manage themselves being in here.

But that's exactly why it doesn't work on table mode.

If you're ignoring a person and someone replies to something they said, you'd not want to see anything further shirley, as you're missing what that person said and therefore you don't want to read anything relating.

I think you have your board regulars who seem to take up the back seat of the coach and round on any poster with an 'outside' view. This then spirals into a petty battle of egos. Maybe removing the up/down arrows will avoid any keyboard gang warfare?
