Face it, nobody is gonna beat him. (n/t) on 19:22 - Jul 21 by pointofblue | I think Michelle Obama might. If it was a person with a say within the Democrats I'd go on bended knee to her to stand. Of course, she may not want to. |
Not only does Michelle Obama not want to stand, it would be a very bad idea. Sure, she'd be a very good candidate if it was just down to personality, presentation skills and perhaps policy (depending upon how far she diverged from Barak in that respect). However, she is: 1. A woman 2. Black 3. The wife of a former President. None of those things play well with a lot of the US electorate.

Biden standing down (n/t) on 19:48 - Jul 21 by NthQldITFC | Thank f for that. I hope Harris is open to standing aside too IF her approval ratings don't pick up. I think it's absolutely crucial for the whole planet, let alone the US, that that self-serving, narcissistic, orange tvvat doesn't get in again. |
But who else would do any better than Harris?

Biden standing down (n/t) on 20:10 - Jul 21 with 1782 views | Zx1988 | What's likely to happen now, White House-watchers? Is Biden's endorsement of Harris likely to be enough to make her a shoo-in for the Democrat nomination? Or is there a stalking horse or two that's been waiting in the wings for this moment, who will now throw their hat into the ring?

Biden standing down (n/t) on 19:35 - Jul 21 by Linners | I don't know - but it will have to be one hell of an effort. Trump is an absolute mess of a human, and the majority of Americans don't want him to be POTUS, but for the Democrats to convince enough of them to vote for Harris rather than stay at home will require every sinew of effort. I'd say the chances are low, but not nil - which they pretty much were for Biden. |
Part of the problem is the bi-polarity of US politics. If you don't vote for your "side", the other lot will get in. At the present time, polarisation has become so extreme that the "middle" of floating voters has been squeezed to such a tiny proportion of the electorate that everything is extremely marginal. Republicans who hate Trump and what he stands for will still vote for him to keep a Democrat out of the White House (and the same in reverse, tho progressives are more likely to abstain on principle). That's what people who do not want to see Trump elected are fighting against.

I reckon it does. Apparently all the campaign funds raised for Biden can go to Harris. Any other candidate and they would have to be returned and the new candidate would not have that war chest. (Albeit some donors would obviously be happy for their donation to go to ANOther democratic nominee)

Very hard to tell. There's not a lot of prime alternative candidates around. Plus the factions which compromised to fall in behind Biden in 2020 have by no means buried their differences. Things could fall apart still further. Or someone unexpected could step forward (e.g. Clooney, suggested by Buhrer below).

Harris plus Newsom I assume will be the politically acceptable option. Harris plus Buttigieg would be the best option policy wise, but a woman plus a gay man? Not in an America where Trump wants to remove equality of marriage for gay couples.

I'm not sure that's strictly fair, as there weren't a lot of good alternatives who could step into his place. Getting rid when there wasn't an election to concentrate minds might have provoked more uncertainty and factional struggle. Plus I don't think anybody else would have been more capable of stopping the March of the Trump. That is a self-contained, autonomously powered thing within Republicanism. Nothing anybody says (including, to some extent, Trump himself) cuts any ice with that cult.

Knowing nothing about US politics beneath the obvious bits and pieces, is Clooney seen as a legitimate potential candidate?

I disagree (slightly) from personal experience. More moderate/traditional Republicans won’t vote for Trump, they just won’t vote.

No, but that makes little difference in the Presidential race. Anyone can step into it, with no prior experience. Trump had never held (or even run for) elected or public office before he stood and won.

Biden standing down (n/t) on 20:32 - Jul 21 with 1633 views | NthQldITFC | Very good statement by the Clintons, I think. If enough big beasts unite behind Harris and she comes out aggressively, I guess she can turn the tide. I think she needs to be very visible, very quickly though, before formal confirmation in order for Trump not to put her on the back foot.

Pre assassination attempt, polling showed that Michelle Obama would beat Trump comfortably. No other individual could boast the same - and certainly not Harris.
