My For You feed is so broken. Where others get crypto bots and porn, do you know what I get? Huddersfield and Wigan stories.

I uninstalled Twitter from my phone yesterday, it's become an absolute cesspit of misinformation. I'll probably delete my account pretty soon - it's had its day.

Ugly Scenes in Southport on 07:50 - Jul 31 with 2687 views | Zx1988 | I found myself listening to Jungleland by Springsteen this morning. The final verse feels somewhat relevant, in light of current goings-on: Outside the street's on fire in a real death waltz Between what's flesh and what's fantasy And the poets down here don't write nothing at all They just stand back and let it all be And in the quick of a knife, they reach for their moment And try to make an honest stand But they wind up wounded, not even dead Tonight in Jungleland [Post edited 31 Jul 2024 7:51]

You won’t regret it if you delete it. I stopped using Twitter when it went to registered users only under Musk and it’s freeing. Not only is it full of bile, it’s a time suck (although so is this place!).

Ugly Scenes in Southport on 00:23 - Jul 31 by giant_stow | Farage has posted about Southend too. What with him and all the other high profile alt right accounts going at once, it's almost like someone's flipped a switch. Also seeing so many 'something weird is going on in this country' posts... Again enough to make you wonder. Wicklow is bang on. Utter poison is flooding social media (even more than normal). I pray we all keep our heads and don't fall into the traps ahead. |
When the temperature gauge rises, so does the risk of contagion; in this case outbreaks of disorder. Most, if not all riots in this country have occurred during hot weather.

There's a sweetspot, apparently: Psychologist Lance Workman, from the University of South Wales, says there is a relation between rising temperature and civil disturbances. Crime and riots increase between 27C and 32C – but after 32C, “it’s as though people are too hot to bother”. Workman thinks the cause could be both physiological and psychological. Sunshine, he says, leads to an increase of serotonin, sudden boosts of which can lead to increased irritability, while aggression can be caused by frustration and an inability to control things - such as our temperature.

I don't think the riot in Southport yesterday had anything to do with the hot weather because it was clearly organised As it is, it was only 23 degrees in Southport yesterday. [Post edited 31 Jul 2024 9:05]

The country isn’t “on its knees” though is it Jesus Christ. A few hundred bellends are kicking off in a couple of places. Such hyperbolic scheisse, go to Haiti or the Congo or Somalia for a country on its knees. What little they know of England, whom only England know.

I attended a Billy Bragg concert a couple of months ago in aid of it, and I would certainly vouch for it. The following is their report on Saturday's demonstration in London, which an estimated 20-30.000 attended, far more than the hundreds which attended the remembrance demonstration in Whitehall last November. https://hopenothate.org.uk/2024/07/27/tommy-robinson-leads-huge-far-right-demons The article puts the growth in support down to Yaxley-Lennon's readmission to X, and it would be nice if TWTD's good name weren't besmirched by the posting of what is far right propaganda. Just wait for the far right outrage when they hear about the mods and rockers in Brighton in the 60s. As it is, it is rather ironic for groups like the Football Lads Alliance (a front for far right football hooligans) to be concerned about disorder. [Post edited 31 Jul 2024 10:23]

Ugly Scenes in Southport on 10:20 - Jul 31 with 1935 views | GlasgowBlue | Merseyside Police have confirmed: 22 officers injured, includes fractures, a broken nose and one was knocked unconscious. Members of the public had cars set on fire. Bricks and fireworks thrown at mosque. Three police dogs injured, one badly burnt, two others hit by bricks. I hope this is widely reported in the media and people who may be susceptible to these hate mongers see them for what they are.

Phil's doing a good job of picking off the racists that pop up. Must be a right pain to have to police this place sometimes. I'm not sure having SYL all over the site is a good look, but at least it can be challenged. But thankfully there's no room on here for illiterate losers trying to defend him or justify the actions of his little army.

I've just seen a (unverified) photo, apparently showing Southport locals repairing a wall which was damaged at the mosque. If so, that's a proper response to the far right thugs that shamed their town yesterday.

I know Southport well because I got married there and have visited it many times, and I am sure that a resident tidying up who was interviewed on Sky this morning was right when he said the rioters came from elsewhere. And this is what the Police and Crime Commissioner said. "(Merseyside Police) will be reviewing the footage of exactly who was there last night, they have been monitoring the online activity as well, trying to understand who was doing what. They have said that they believe it was members of the English Defence League (EDL), they don’t believe it was individuals from the local area. There is a strong feeling that there are individuals like the EDL, who have been using this incredibly tragic event to whip up hatred, incite violence, and that’s the result of what we saw last night. There is a strong sense that this is people who have come from out-of-area simply to create violence and abuse against officers and towards a community who are not in any way accepting of this behaviour."
