didn't Royle say something to fan the flames or something like that?

Apparently there was something that Royle said although there was no evidence of the quote that some used against him by the time he took over here.

There were a number of comments exchanged between supporters on here and on their board throughout that season which was of course pre Twitter days.

I think people from both sides are making far more of this than there ever was at the time.

they got relegated, which was funny because of all their we're a massive club we are alright, and we werent getting relegated, so we sung a song because it was amusing, pass the vapours football fans having fun at the expense of the opposition what a world we live in, and thats all there was to it.

anyone trying to claim all manner of deep meanings to it are being way too precious.

and no one held that connection against Joe Royle, just like most of us couldnt be bothered of his Norwich connections either, he was well liked by our fans as manager, no-one (compared to the extent managers since have been) remotely had a pop at him in his time.

Why he never felt fully settled here wasnt because of the lack of support from the fans, he got dealt a poor hand by the club for sure (that might be the clue...) but the fans were always with him and were sorry he didnt get us back in the Premier league, leaving when we all knew he wouldnt be able to take us any further forward, given the financial situation we faced.

I remember watching them at PR and singing "Blue moon, you got promoted too soon. Now you're going back down", etc. Was that when Feckerby was playing for them?

I'd get that thread printed up serve it as the breakfast newspaper to the squad for quiet read so they know how flakey they think we are.... but I'm sure Keiran will have better plans.

Nothing has been proven though.

If I were a City fan, this whole affair would annoy me. The historic big clubs have spent what they’ve liked but along come City and Newcastle - let’s limit what they can spend as it’s not good for them (sorry, the game). FFP is simply a way for the newer monied teams to be kept in their place.

Sure, I don't deny any of that re: FFP, but the historic clubs didn't break the rules. Believe me, I've had exactly the same 'heated discussions' with mates who support the likes of Chelsea, too - it's ruining the game, and they're more than happy to ruin the game as long as it benefits them.

That's exactly what I mean by certain types of people thinking "I don't like the rules and I'm rich so I'll just ignore them."

But even in the unlikely event that they're completely innocent of doing anything wrong (LOL), then City haven't covered themselves in glory by refusing to engage with investigations etc.

And I'm sure there are really obvious explanations for managers' offshore accounts being laden with cash and sponsorship deals from the owners' businesses being worth far more than anyone else's. The sensible thing to do would just be to come out and explain those obvious reasons and the whole thing will go away...

Let's be honest, the whole thing stinks. And while I think Villa, United, Chelsea etc are all just as culpable for the game going the way it has, the idea that City are just innocent souls caught up in the whole thing is a big old pile of bullocks.

What was the beef with them in 2001? Because they had pipped us to second the year before? Honestly can't remember.

Have to disagree with your final sentence - Blue Moon is a number one record compared to... the other one you mention.

They won at Birmingham on the Friday ahead of our game at already promoted Charlton the following day and celebrated as if they'd won promotion, which was a little disrespectful and Joe Royle was said to have made some disparaging comments about how big they were and how much more they deserved it, although I never found them. We won at Charlton to take it to the following week.

It was actually a relatively good-natured rivalry for promotion for the most part. The Blue Moon website crashed for a bit during that period and TWTD briefly became a joint-Town-Man City Forum for a bit.

To be fair, that is a wonderful thread.

After 9 pages of tractor hating, carrot crunching, inbred calling venom the last post in the thread comes out of nowhere:

"I had a debatably noncey PE teacher that supported Ipswich and became a vicar."

Superb.

Funny. One fan displays one banner and now 20+ years later, after we've not played them(? Or rarely?) and been two leagues apart, were are meant to believe we are bitter rivals.

Even more stupid than Watford.

I never understood the EmptyHad thing as they sell out regularly with an average attendance of 53k. Their stadium holds 53k as well.

Plymouth and Sheffield Wed were one season rivalries due to one of the most intense automatic promotion battles ever across all three leagues. Hardly weird in that context and I doubt they'll be crying in 20 years time over it, let alone something as lame as a weakest link sign.

Well exactly - which is why a small number of our fans seemingly being determined to carry that on last season (admittedly mainly on sochy meeds) was a bit odd. Even saw a couple of ‘league one’s best team’ posts about Plymouth from Town fans when they were getting thrashed the other day

Meanwhile there are some Man City fans still holding a grudge about us relegating them and taking the p*ss 20+ years ago, when they’ve just won 4 titles in a row. Mental. Proper fans, love it

Just sounds empty. I went there a few years ago to watch them play Wolves, it was an absolutely dire atmosphere.

I think there is probably a validity in the fans of that era holding on to some of the memories pre-Abu Dhabi takeover - like it must be so weird supporting a club that was relatively normal for a long time (won some cups, the odd relegation and promotion etc.) who then become one of those super clubs with tourist fans, european football every season as a given and going into pretty much every game knowing you're going to win.

Don't get me wrong, they will absolutely have memories to last a lifetime that came along the way (and have played some of the most stunning football England has ever seen in the process) but I bet there's a little bit of some of them that miss the promotion battles and relegation scraps too.

I bet there ain’t..

Just seems that when your in a battle for promotion, whoever is competing for promotion becomes your instant rival, wedensday, Plymouth, saints, Leeds Leicester … maybe some just hold on to it longer, one thing I find refreshing with town supporters, bar Norwich, we couldn’t care too much .

They’re a strange lot. They won the league and the FA Cup in the late 60s and a League Cup in the 70s and that’s about it until the head chopper money came rolling in.

The were pretty much in our shadow 72-82 and bounced between leagues like ourselves after that for a time. I always enjoyed the Man City games. Good support and atmosphere.

I’m really not sure why they’re so bitter about 2001. They didn’t exactly suffer for it and were going down anyway. And when it comes down to it with the money doping they’re in a completely different universe to us.

Still, it’s nice that some of the older ones remember us.

Yeah, it was that mainly. The season, and particularly the media hype, was a bit annoying at the time and that hype continued into the Summer leaving us (and Charlton who had a comfortably decent season too) with relatively little coverage. Their relegation after that was therefore quite funny.

I think there was definitely an element of hubris about our reaction to their relegation though, a failure to recognise that staying up for one season didn't make us an established club as the following season showed. The 'Blue Moon' song was amusing but I can see why some of them might have taken umbrage at it, although I would also have thought that the hammering they gave us in the FA Cup the following season, let alone what has happened since, might have ameliorated that.

I remember the night we relegated them well. A great atmosphere we were singing to the tune of Blue Moon. “Too soon, you got promoted too soon. Now you are going back down and it’s Europe for Town.” Shame they got the Saudi billions and the rest is history
