Some Man City fans sure know how to hold a grudge… on 11:09 - Aug 20 with 7167 views | MattinLondon | I did have a chuckle at the comment ‘I think they had some beef over something irrelevant’, I’m not sure that that City poster has much self-awareness. Plus the reply to that particular post ‘it were possible, it would be so satisfying to relegate the insolent bastards at their gaff. Everything comes to he who waits......Karma !! Is he talking about us or their possible heavy points deduction? I don’t really have anything against them - it does make me smile that for years they’ve complained about United buying the league but look at them now. They’ve basically become everything they said that they’ve hated about their main rivals. No one can dispute the fact that they play fantastic football and are one of the best (if not the best) team in the world. But some of their fans are so delicate. And Blue Moon is even worse than On The Ball City and I cannot forgive that. Edit. On reflection, they probably don’t get as much credit as what Liverpool or Man Utd received now and in the 90s. What was the beef with them in 2001? Because they had pipped us to second the year before? Honestly can't remember. Have to disagree with your final sentence - Blue Moon is a number one record compared to... the other one you mention.

Nah, Blue Moon is awful. I honestly can’t remember what was the beef in 2001. Considering the number of times they have sung that Munich song at Old Trafford, I honestly have no idea why they think that that weakest link banner was so awful. Ok, it took the piss but it wasn’t in poor taste.

i don't mind City tbh. Between them or Chelsea, City every single time. They've spent a lot of money, but they haven't blown the transfer fees out of the water like a Madrid, Barcelona spending 140/198 million on a single player. They haven't sacked manager after manager unlike Chelsea, of course they have had Pep which sacking him looks unthinkable but before that they gave people time. The 115 charges aren't good of course and if they are found to be guilty then it will be a seismic thing in English football. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

I don't recall there being a beef with them as such. I think the media had a bit of a City love in that season (doing a back to back promotion) to the expense of ourselves and even Charlton who comfortably won the league. There was that pitch invasion where they 'celebrated promotion' on the Friday night v Birmingham before we played at the Valley the next day which rubbed a few up the wrong way but it was hardly a huge thing. It was also a bit early doors fans message boards on the internet which may have seen some banter get out of hand. All a bit nothing really. I haven't thought about it since and given what's happened at City in the last 20 odd years, I'm surprised they even give us a second thought.

Don't you remember the banner that one of the inbred " Tractor Boys" had on display during an Ipshich Town game in 2001. Just about when City were about to get relegated and Ipswich were also a relegation candidate . Relegation candidates that went into final day with a mathematical chance of CL qualification?

Likewise. Outside of the financial doping of the game (see also Chelsea, Newcastle to an extent), I haven't really considered Manchester City as a club we have history or beef with. Not like Sheffield United, as an example, where it's clear where it comes from on both sides.

If I was to have a problem with City, I'd be more thinking of 'bloody Paul Power' than anything that happened at the turn of this century.

City beat us in FA Cup, at Portman Road, 1-4. Wouldn’t say we held a beef over it though.

It was because they banged on about being such a massive club in the previous season in the Championship, when they got automatic promotion. Our nickname for them was the Massives. And then they got relegated at Protman Road the following season. That was a fun night. Part of the reason Joe Royle got such a hard time from some of the fans, which was unfair. They used to be a really likeable club, but they strike me as joyless now. Guess that’s what comes from being the PR arm of a repressive petro- state. Do play some lovely football, though.

They play some wonderful football - no one of sound mind can deny that. From what a Man City supporter told me recently - their hierarchy care more for day trippers spending hundreds in the club shop than for the traditional City fan. Guess, that what success means.

I don't really understand why any real football fan *would* like them? Yes, they play great football and have amassed an incredible squad, but they cheated to do it and they're the absolute poster boys for this new (mostly Arab-led) world where the attitude is: "I want this and I'm rich so who are you to stop me with your rules?" Lance Armstrong was a great cyclist Ben Johnson ran an incredible 100m sprint Man City built a brilliant football team *shrug*

In 2000 they played on the Friday night and celebrated like they were already up at the final whistle. Royal seemed to imply it was done in his post match interview and came across very cocky. We went on to beat Charlton 3-0 away the following day to keep the race for 2nd alive. Relegating them a year later felt like a bit of revenge at the time.

Nothing has been proven though. If I were a City fan, this whole affair would annoy me. The historic big clubs have spent what they’ve liked but along come City and Newcastle - let’s limit what they can spend as it’s not good for them (sorry, the game). FFP is simply a way for the newer monied teams to be kept in their place.
Some Man City fans sure know how to hold a grudge… on 12:22 - Aug 20 with 5846 views | JakeITFC | I think there is probably a validity in the fans of that era holding on to some of the memories pre-Abu Dhabi takeover - like it must be so weird supporting a club that was relatively normal for a long time (won some cups, the odd relegation and promotion etc.) who then become one of those super clubs with tourist fans, european football every season as a given and going into pretty much every game knowing you're going to win. Don't get me wrong, they will absolutely have memories to last a lifetime that came along the way (and have played some of the most stunning football England has ever seen in the process) but I bet there's a little bit of some of them that miss the promotion battles and relegation scraps too.

Yeah, it was that mainly. The season, and particularly the media hype, was a bit annoying at the time and that hype continued into the Summer leaving us (and Charlton who had a comfortably decent season too) with relatively little coverage. Their relegation after that was therefore quite funny. I think there was definitely an element of hubris about our reaction to their relegation though, a failure to recognise that staying up for one season didn't make us an established club as the following season showed. The 'Blue Moon' song was amusing but I can see why some of them might have taken umbrage at it, although I would also have thought that the hammering they gave us in the FA Cup the following season, let alone what has happened since, might have ameliorated that.

Some Man City fans sure know how to hold a grudge… on 13:14 - Aug 20 with 5334 views | Vegtablue | I get it - would be protecting and asserting my memories of life before becoming Abu Dhabi's plaything too if in the same situation. From our side, we enjoyed a laugh at their expense in 2001 and there concluded our very brief relevance to each other. And yet maybe it would be fitting for their punishment to come in this of all seasons, and we may stay up at their expense. That would be a great laugh. We could post another banner to Fulham in May.
