Everything I hate about football 19:01 - Aug 24 with 11348 viewsMullet

Half and half scarves, a massive stadium and no noise, people leaving after half an hour both halves, some weird sheet presentation on the pitch beforehand, VAR not making sense, a big queue for the bogs. As an experience, that was about as poor as it gets for me. Even watching two dozen of them Poznan was a bit pitiful and made me feel sorry for them rather than sneer.

It was great taking the lead, the away end were a credit to us too, but apart from that it’s hard to pick out highlights. Everything else is either filed under damage control or hope for the future.

Muric was hopefully trying too hard because he did make that decent save in the second half. But he also made some bizarre kicking choices alongside the obvious rick. The penalty was weird as in the stadium the ref pointed to a goal kick. The replay looks like it was a penalty so fair enough.

But not giving the Davis one, let alone looking at it when going in at 3-2 might have turned our mindset a little is huge for me. I don’t get why it wasn’t checked or given. It’s annoyed me.

I didn’t like Szmodics swapping his shirt at the end, for me it shows you don’t see yourself as equal. But it’s not a big deal, and given I wasn’t fussed about signing him he’s turned out to be a revelation. Hard to see where Chaplin fits in, alongside a few others who’ve featured so far.

Delap looks a proper player, I really hope he gets a decent return this season. If he gets more chances than he has had so far he will no doubt be a danger. My big hope is that rather than free hits, this start has been a benchmarking exercise for everyone.

Can’t blame City fans when you shell out that much money as fans, but they’ve lost their club completely. Soulless and sterile. I’d hate to see that happen to us.

Still had a great day out, but agree that it was bizarre. Soulless corporate machine totally sums it up.

Given how expensive it is to attend matches, it was amazing how late fans were going into the stadium, and how early they left. We were delayed on the M6, so only just got there on time. There were still loads of people wandering around outside the stadium and queuing to get in five minutes before kick off.

Even when Harness and Edmunson came on, I was waiting for the obligatory 'who?!' as their names were announced. But... nothing.

The Emirates has atmosphere, Villa Park has atmosphere. Not been to United but I assume it still does. I was just embarrassed for City. Even when they scored, the announcer saying 'Erling': crowd 'Haaland' three times... it felt like primary school.

It was a joy to see their players. They're another level. But if I was one of their fans who stuck with them through lower leagues and dark times I'd have lost heart and given up going, it'd just be too depressing to see what they have become.

I was amused by just how upset some of their fans got at a chorus of “Where were you when you were sh1t?”

Clearly touched a nerve.

Biggest frustration for me today was that we couldn’t hold the lead for 15-20 minutes and let them get edgy, I see McK has said the same since too. They were excellent for a spell but then we regained our composure and competed, albeit they had several gears left.

The season was never about just the first two games but now, next week is massive and we really need some points down.

I really do not think they were excellent during that spell, we just lost it for 10 mins. We really gave then the game. But there was a lot of good things in there, i feel truly encouraged after the first 2 games. But post international break we need to be taking points

Poll: If we sing for 90 mins for all remaining games, how many points is it worth?

I was in with their fans and they made me chuckle whinging at lots of decisions. They were describing the Aguiro goal as the greatest moment and reminiscing about Bolton playoffs win. I said what about the treble? Lol
I really got the feel of this machine that has been created. The fans were friendly and dressed head to toe in City gear. A strange mix of Extreme wealth and entitlement plus local club fans who likely saw Maine road misery.

I did find the strange modern Aguero and Kompany statues bland too. They had proper bronze ones for the older players. Lots of oriental tourists too, can see why they're building a hotel, big profit machine. They care not for competitivity of the Premier League. We are all a global business now.

That bloody M6 delay.

I genuinely don’t think they will get punished - they have the backing of a nation who will bleed the league dry in court for years.

The prem won’t want to lose that amount, nor will they want to damage the brand.

You may well be right and a succession of appeals is likely if they are found guilty.

I wonder if there will be a plea deal and an agreed recommended penalty consisting of a fine only?

Given the number of counts, the hearings/appeals will run for quite a while. Given the number of counts, it would be quite something if they are cleared of all 115.

If they are found guilty on a large number of those counts, then the penalty will have to be severe and the nature of any penalty will inform us what is top trump, money or integrity. The whole thing may lead to more uncomfortable and complex questions around ownership of the English game and supporters in these money machine obscenities.

IIRC, City didn’t cooperate with the investigation which is an aggravating factor.

Will be quite the tale indeed!

Ta for this and your summary of what it was like being there.

They’re not very nice, are they. Their self entitlement and arrogance is the full pint. Understandable given all the trophies they’ve bought. Their contempt for us tells me we must be doing something right!

As for shirt swapping, I agree. I don’t like to see it. If they choose to do it after the game in the tunnel, private etc fine but on the pitch it’s all a bit ‘grateful to be here’ for me.

They consider us relegation fodder and very uncomplimentory about the team.....
What they don't realise is that our "team" will be very different in both composition and experience by the time they next play us.

I think as Steve notes, they’re very sensitive and know it’s true. The stuff on their forum about us only singing about them is testament to how delusional some of them are.

Always feel sorry for the proper City fans as they are a dying breed, and judging by that not happy with their club either when it comes to the stadium stuff.

Wonder what they’ll be like when they come down to our place?

Yes they were, they were singing where were you when we were shît

Our fans joined in with giving the South stand side some stick and the ones to the left applauded. Then they sung for our fans to do a Poznan so they did.

Good, friendly football banter.

Bounce in a minute was the kiss of death for us. Just a second away from bouncing and Haaland makes it four.

MC supporters used to make a racket, with or without inflatable bananas. They were very grounded too, but that’s a lot of years ago now. I suspect they’ll be as quiet as the Liverpool mice but I might be wrong. Man U still have a noisy away following, so I’m told.

It amused me to see you featured on Man City’s forum. Fame at last! 😃. Plenty of them were not very complimentary about us. Oh well, I guess we’ll just have to live with the disappointment.

That's good to know. I thought they were singing it to our fans which would have been the most ironic thing I've heard at a match!

I'd have said it would have been fair comment. We didn't take many when we were sh1t.

Villa park was pretty much silent for most of the match vs Arsenal yesterday not many clubs in England at least the PL have a consistent good home atmosphere. Our atmosphere vs Madrid, Derby games , against Liverpool is as good as most in the country yesterday wasn’t the best but I’m sure your ground isn’t good against lower opposition no disrespect but it’s just how it is in the whole country yet only City get stick for it. Our away ends are still one of the best in the country as well I don’t understand why people feel sorry for us

Why were you at Villa park yesterday?

Portman Rd has been brilliant of late because we’ve had so much success. This “only Citeh get stick” line is a bit revealing of the self pity isn’t it? How can I or we comment on anyone else? We were talking about yesterday.

It’s a real shame as I grew up hating United and you’ve become everything they were and more.

I read that thread ,loved the bit about us being relegated before Santa has done his rounds. I think they have forgotten where they have come from. Was it a dodgy penalty against Gillingham in the 3rd division play off final. How things change when you win the lottery of owner's.

Going from league one up to the Prem, we've been to a lot of different away grounds. And I've visited a lot of different clubs over the past 30 years. Of course, I've seen grounds much quieter than the Etihad was yesterday. BUT you've just won your fourth straight title. You have the best manager in history and some of the best players in the world. And your support was dire.

Home fans are always quieter than away fans. Portman Road has seen its empty quiet days too, of course. But not in the past couple of years since we've been more successful. I honestly thought the success MCFC have had would have had your fans going strong.

And I've never seen fans streaming out with 15 mins to go and the stadium half empty by the final whistle anywhere else.

That's not singling out MCFC at all. Just my surprise and disappointment that the home fans were so poor, despite the players being so good. Maybe I'll feel the same about other clubs when I go, and the problem is the Premier League. But this was the first away match of the season, so for now it's all we have to go on.

Was it me, or were the City fans to our right taking the pi$$ out of the ones to our left?

Yes they were. The ones to our right were singing that they were from the old Kippax End at Maine Road, their songs were that the ones to our left were new tourist fans.

Was judging Villa yesterday on what I seen on TV but I have been there many times away and never been that impressed only support I was impressed with was wolves Home support a few years ago and Liverpool when we faced them in CL game away in 2018. The best atmosphere are the European aways. Most of the country has problems with creating an home atmosphere it’s not self pity it’s just what I’ve experienced

It's nice to have a Man City fan take the time to engage in a discussion without the 'small club' and 'your FA Cup Final' rhetoric.

Yes, our fans are having a great experience this season, off the back of successive promotions, and that is why Arne Slot commented on how very loud our home support was last week, and why, probably, we were louder on the whole than Man City fans were yesterday.

But I don't get why some fans use that as a point scoring opportunity. It's needless and childish. We are all football fans, we just support different teams.

I guess, having been through 19 years of gradual rot and decline, followed by 3 years of ascent and ultimate 'glory', we still feel incredibly grateful to be playing at the top this season.

For some to suggest it's our cup final and how pathetic we are to turn up and show a bit of traditional banter, without being rude or disrespectful is to do a disservice to all fans who have watched their club through hard times, including Man City's fans. If anything, they should appreciate the good times, considering the tough times a couple of decades ago.

It's also unfair to deride City fans for the plastics, tourists, financial investment etc. It's not their doing, it's circumstances and good fortune, it doesn't make true fans any less relevant.

I just find it so sad that fans want to point score all the time.

It's nice to know that decent fans as yourself are still about.

Don’t know much about us do they, it’s been near impossible to get away tickets for years unless you have a shed load of points. There are Town fans that would step over their own nan to get tickets for Peterborough away let alone PL.

Just got to laugh it off, they have a tonne of casual fans that know f all about football and have never been within 50 miles of Manchester, let alone attend games.

I do respect the ones that haven’t just spat their dummy or made loads of stuff up to be fair. But they do have a massive problem. Every year the ones who remember the struggle are priced out and dying off.
