£25m for a striker with 6 goals in 44 apps for Burnley is madness 23:53 - Aug 27 with 6352 viewsMatt_Netherlands

I’d love to be wrong about this but no matter how you look at it, the potential purchase amount is absolutely bonkers. I completely understand that our centre forwards aren’t expected to be 25 goal a season poachers, but you’re telling me this isn’t better options out there in this price bracket?!

If you’d told anyone two years ago we’d be spending this much on a player like that, you’d be laughed out of the room.

He might be the missing piece of the jigsaw, but I worry this could be an expensive risk.

In Kieran we trust and all that, I just hope this isn’t a panic buy*

Gassan Ahadme x 25

Who do you think would score more goals in a premier league season. One Lyle Foster or 25 Ahadmes?

Wouldn’t be surprised. The very expensive footballing equivalent of calling up Sky and trying to call their bluff saying you want to cancel your package…

People need to calm down a bit.

There could be a number of things about this which make it less of a problem. We just need to wait and see.

True - if at least £10m of it was tied up in clauses it wouldn’t be so bad though the original tweet called it a ‘fixed’ amount.

I think the issue is we don't have £25m left in the budget for this season so need to push the spend to next season.

Yip, madness indeed. Yet Ashton and his team are reportedly in advanced talks with Burnley.

Anyone else getting slightly uneasy at our willingness to throw a lot of money at every player we’re looking at / signing?

I agree. Not the sort of player we need. I would rather spend that sort of money on a better striker in his late 20s who would be initially be in front of Delap.

Totally agree. 25 mil is madness for a striker whose stats is terrible. What are we becoming, another dumping ground for relegated Burnley? Plenty of better options for the price and even if we can't get anyone in, I'd rather go for Latte Lath and Simms - even signing both won't cost a fraction of 25 mil!

Yes but it seems we have reached budget max out, so anyone now has to be a loan with a purchase agreed on staying up- which severely limits the pool.

Does seem somewhat rash if this is the case as I would put a no 9 as one of our top priorities.

Isn’t what has happened that we did the deal with Chelsea to get Broja next year. Great, we get a good player, on fair terms.

We spend the rest of this seasons budget on Taylor and O’Shea, and then Broja fails the medical.

We now have to find a striker capable of playing for us, but that we can’t pay for for 12 months.

So whoever we buy off can demand a premium for the payment terms.

At what fee does it make sense? It’s surely a minimum of £18m or so…..if the fee comes out there what do people think of the deal?

How does it tie up against Broja at £30m, or Delap at £15m - the fee seems a bit high but not massively out of the way and may be the cost for structuring it that way, or may be the figure Burnley want out there?

For me it feels a downgrade from Broja, a good sized one, but we don’t know when Broja will be available so that may be playing into it

Ings? You might as well put me up front, he can’t do the hold up play we need. Would be a waste of wages.

As for this deal, I’ve not seen a lot of the guy, but I thought after Hirst we were done rating a striker purely on goals scored. Nobody would have looked at Hirst’s record and thought he’d improve our all round play infinitely. Moore had a better goals to games ratio but wasn’t remotely as well rounded.

No way KM sanctions this if he doesn’t think he’d fit.

Maybe worth remembering that he made 24 appearance
In the Premier league and scored 5 times and we do have goalscoring number 10's in our system. Not sure we will be able to afford to buy a striker with a better scoring record with the budget we have .

He had 3 in 7 games prior to his depression hospital visit, so that's a tidy return in the prem up until that point.

I freely admit I know nothing about this guy but in general terms we will be paying over the odds for any striker we bring in now.

The Broja deal effectively falling apart, or so it seems, at this stage of the window leaves us scrabbling around for a replacement and selling clubs know it. It’s a sellers market at this point!

I struggle with them paying €10m for him and 18 months later him being worth even £18m (let alone £25m) after scoring 1 Championship goal and 5 Premier League goals. Cameron Archer would be my benchmark at £15m.

A huge downgrade on Broja IMO. And doesn't come without his own risk given his previous issues with depression.

Seems like we maybe need a loan to buy this summer which likely limits options. I'd be more comfortable with this deal if it was an option at the end of the season rather than an obligation.

That is just the cost of being in the Premier League though and what people seem to be missing is that we are not immune to that.

Foster scored 6 goals in a Burnley side that didn't do very well and went down. There's a case to say he scores 10-15 goals if he's in a side that's in the top half of the table based on his stats, shots, conversions etc. That is very much £20m - £25m these days.

Look at Solanke's stats from a few years back. He's now worth £65m.

McKenna and Ashton haven't got much wrong so far. Foster cost £11m last summer and by all accounts did very well in the Premier League. He is immediately worth £20m or so as a result of that.

By contrast, what people are missing is that if Hirst banged in 10 goals this season and we went down, he'd be worth £18m - £20m. That is how it goes.

So yes it's utterly bonkers. Football is insane as it is money wise. When you've been away for 20 years and were taking £100k punts on Ahadme two years back even more so.

But the difference here is that if Foster signs for £20m and then does very little, the chances are he's still worth £12m - £15m by the time we want to offload him.

Look at what Burnley are getting for players. Hamer is off to Leeds for £18m. Look at what players left Leeds for this summer. We are now in that world where even if we go down, our best performers will be moving on themselves for £20m, £30m, £40m.

Actually I watch all the Premier and Championship matches I possibly can and have a reasonable knowledge of players in these leagues.
