If I were a 'big club' scout... 21:13 - Sep 9 with 8846 viewsLinners

...I'd be keeping a close eye on Liam Delap. He's got all the attributes of a top striker - presence, power, touch, speed and a little bit of nastiness. I think he's a little way off with finishing overall, but that's probably the easiest bit of all to coach.

Lovely jubbly.

I am delighted that we have signed Omari, Szmodics and Clarke, but, so far, Delap is the one who, to me, has just looked "right" at this level the quickest.

The others have looked "decent" or "promising" against Manchester City and Liverpool, suggesting that when the new team clicks they will be fine against other Prem teams who aren't at the level of those two clubs.

Whereas, to me, Delap looked like one of the best 10 players on the pitch already.

He looks better than Hirst as a Centre Forward, to me, and the prospect of those two together, with Delap in the Jon Walters Right Forward role, winning headers against Left Backs, rather than Central Defenders, is very exciting indeed.

I think Hirst will win a lot more fouls in the Prem than he did in the Championship.

For me, the 3 big 'early' signings look the best and PL players already - Greaves, Omari and Delap.

No doubt the others will step up, but those 3 for differing reasons look like the ones who will make us a couple of quid if we aren't able to stay up and are potential future England internationals

Interestingly, an ex-player in the corporate area before the Fulham game said that his first reports about Delap where the senior pros from last year (assume Chappers, Morsy) thinkign he need to pull his finger out and get his @rse in gear, but that after a slow first few weeks in pre season has certainly done so

Would love to see Delap on the right with Hurst through the middle. Not sure we have that luxury until we get another No9 in.

I do like the way Delap stands his ground, but with VAR, he is one flailing arm away from 3 matches on the sofa

Finishing is the one thing that Hirst is better at , nice to have them both at the club .

Bold shout here… but I think he goes on to be Kanes replacement in the England team in a couple of years.

I see a lot of the young Kane in him. He loves to face the goal and get a shot off. Delap has a better shot at this point in his career, but his all-round play is a bit behind where Kane was. Their pathways were a bit different, and Delap has arguable been coached better (he didn't have to play for Norwich either). But, when I first saw Delap in his first preseason, he reminded me immediately of Kane in his breakthrough season.

£50m in 2 years time? Could be...

Yeah, he’ll just go back to city, effectively a loan with the buy back/first refusal thing.

Sorry if I missed this, but when we bought him what sort of buyback/first refusal was in the contract? Does that mean Man City can activate it at any time or only should we choose to sell?

with the buyback clause in place, a big club scout might be wasting their time (unless they're from city)

What if he does not want to go back to City.

The players choice at the end of the day.

He's signed a 5 year contract with us, so I wouldn't think they can just ring up at any time and say they'd like him back... surely it would just be if/when we chose to sell, they'd have first refusal to buy him back, whether that's at a pre-arranged figure, or first refusal on the asking price?

Technically is that correct or do players sign legally binding return contracts at the time these transfers are made? And to hoppy's point, I think there are clearly defined limits on the seller's rights to activate the return, but they don't include the buyer's desire to sell.

They'll be in League 2 having been found guilty of 115 breaches of financial regulations, so won't be able to have him.

Almost certainly....

Some City fans reckoned it would be somewhere in the £40m-£45m ballpark going by the multipliers used in their previous deals.

That is good cheers, broadly how I thought it would be - a personal release clause for City really, which distinguishes it from the first refusal clause. Hopefully the figure is over £50m and can't be activated for two years minimum.

Considering we purchased him for around 20.. anything less than 50 is poor from ashton.
So hopefully if or when it happens it'll be a big pay day.

It's not a loan if the price at which they can buy back is much higher than we paid though, is it?

Plenty of PL clubs will loan out their young players and cover most/all of their wages. Thats basically a loan that costs the bigger club for the priveledge of getting their asset developed.
Arguably this is potentially much the same thing, except we dont know when the loan ends and its going to cost City a lot more money.

Kieran said he had still been suffering from an injury from last season when he first joined, so he may have been a little off the pace due to that.

Also. Lots was said about how intense our training was and we don't know how that compares to any of the new players previous clubs.
