Losing Axel for 6-8 weeks could be a nail in our coffin 09:09 - Oct 6 with 4694 viewsportmanking

Our only defender with any elite level PL experience/calibre. His positional play compared with Johnson's is like night and day. Very easy to see why West Ham didn't commit to a new deal readily.

You have to say Clarke's positional play is equally iffy. I fear for us down that right hand side.

I’m not writing Johnson off yet because he must have something for McKenna to bring him in but he’s got to improve considerably and fast if our right hand side isn’t going to become a real problem.

Like you I don’t think Clarke is the answer but he will get a chance if Johnson turns in another performance like that.

Axel has been good and it’s a blow but “nail in our coffin”, really?

Where do you get 6-8 weeks?!

McKenna said “struggling for West Ham game”, so he should be back for Everton.

RIP Sir Bobby

Kieran said it's not going to be a couple of weeks and they're not yet sure how long, still discussing with the specialists.

I didn’t realise we already had nails in the coffin. I’m so annoyed I’ve apparently slept through to April!!!! I had a holiday booked in February! Grrrr

Not a physician, but a bit odd that a hand injury would keep a footballer out for 6-8 weeks. Can't it be strapped up. Guess it could be broken and needs time to heal..... but 6-8 weeks? Maybe not 2 weeks... means 3 weeks.

Hand injury can be painful when running, esp if the injury extends down into the wrist - movement there could prolong the injury.

Also think of balance, & the chance of it getting knocked, stood on etc.

West ham offered him a five year deal, so let's not make out he was binned out in disgrace. He wanted to play more regularly. The blokes played 70 odd times for west ham and won a European trophy. Clearly been far from great so far, but let's not rewrite it that he's a cast off clogger. Seemed a very decent signing, if unspectacular, who added premier league experience. Just hasn't worked so far, clearly.

I think in terms of pedigree, you can see why we signed him, but we wouldn't have been able to see him at close quarters. Massive alarm bells were ringing for me during the Fortuna pre season. Should have just kept Janoi.

Give me an example of a hand injury keeping an outfield player out for 2 months?

Axel.

Unfortunately I haven't kept records of hand injuries to EPL, EFL or other countries' league's players over the past 10 years.

If KM & medics say 6 weeks+ is what's needed (and it's far from certain it'll be that long, 6-8 weeks is your and others' interpretation) that's good enough for me.

As far as I'm aware, Kieran hasn't given a timescale, made the point that he didn't know how long post-match.

I think you are all forgetting that we are cut adrift at the bottom of the league, 6 points away from safety, have lost to all of the bottom sides and have only a few games left to try to make up that massive gap.

Either that, or we just lost one game.

How would we know?
Whilst I can't think of a town player, there may have been a few amongst the thousands who have played professional football over the years.
The fact is, we don't know what's happened or how.
The injury could be a broken thumb requiring a cast. A broken wrist (still part of the hand I presume) or a carpel tunnel op.

Distortion becomes somehow pure in its wildness.

Also, if our survival really depends on one player (and a right back at that - no disrespect Axel) then we are doomed.

Always look on the bright side of life ...

Seven games in, we're not in the bottom three, but apparently Town are doomed.

Clarke's first ever career start in the Premier League was against Villa, gets an assist, then with a neat dummy puts Delap through one on one, but now he's iffy.

Jeepers ... you'd be a great life coach.
