I'm gradually weening myself off twitter, and am on Bluesky. A fair community of ITFC bods on there now.

The only reason I use Twitter is for ITFC. I got a Blue-sky account ages ago... need to go and check ITFC related bods out there.

I don't think there's any chance the club do this. We have American investors and we have no idea what their political views are (which is as it should be). We are also owned in part by a pension fund from a state where 1,750,000 people voted for Trump who might not like us making such a decision. I know some things are bigger than football but Ashton isn't going to rock the boat. We might well see more posts on alternative sites but there will be no big scene made of leaving Twitter.

Truly impaired.

St Pauli are a bit weird anyway aren’t they, in bed with Celtic, Palestine and all that.

Doesn’t surprise me they’ve chucked toys out of the pram

What's weird about supporting Palestine?

What's weird about not wanting to support Musk?

Why is leaving a horrible platform "chucking their toys out the pram"?

Led to believe in the last 48 hours, The Guardian, Don Lemon, Joy Reid and now St Pauli have decided to come off Twitter/X, think there may be a correlation. Personally have no interest in Twitter, seems to attract Narcissistic Self-obsessed individuals who pontificate on everything and act in a sanctimonious manner alike many other forums(Obviously not TWTD).

A social media platform effectively now owned by the state. Very very dangerous territory

Would wholeheartedly approve. Outside of ITFC content and other football posts (mainly EFL stuff), my timeline seems to be a cesspit or far right hate interspersed with dubious only fans adverts. It’s a horrendous place.

If X was a pub in Ipswich… which one would it be?!

Never been on it. I don't think I have missed anything of importance. I have also stopped using face book. I use internet or text for family/friends or whatsapp.
I also have settings on all search engines that do not remember what I have previously looked at. This is the only way I can get reasonably balanced information about anything. I have become sick of polarising miss information spouted on all media platforms not just social media, and it's getting worse.

Any chance of a ITFC Blue Sky welcome pack to save searching them out? Recently moved but still trying to rebuild a good list of accounts to follow.

"Reckon he'll care"

Yeah, fair play - he wouldn't

Yet if people were to not use the platform, even more advertisers leave the platform, and it becomes a massive financial burden... he might just care. In your language I think that freedom of choice is akin to throwing toys out of the pram, or something.

Ooops.

Absolutely. I don't want my club to have these horrible wokerati things like morals and ethics. It's the woke blob taking over.

More hate. More racism. More misogyny. THAT'S what I want to see from Ipswich, to show the world we're a proper LADS' club.

True it's VC funded, but BlueSky was started by the main protagonist behind Twitter, the person who made it so successful before Musk took over: Jack Dorsey.

It is fundamentally different in that it's open source. It can't become a hell-hole to the same extent as X because the project can be forked (a copy made of the source code, and then a new app created).

Also, it's based on an open source protocol (AT) that other micro-blogging apps can use besides BlueSky. So again, if it becomes dystopian, people can jump ship to another app that supports AT without losing your identity, followers, etc.

I hope the club, and everything else ITFC related at least starts cross-posting to BlueSky with a view to it becoming the primary social media platform.

Is @ipswichtown.bsy.social the next step? Looks like they might have put a stake in the ground, but no posts yet....

But while we're here... fook Musk and fook Big Tech... a group of obscenely powerful, unaccountable and unelected bully boys smitten with their delusional own hype and spangle eyed greed. They should have been properly regulated two decades ago. Hell, some of them, Google e.g., asked for better regulation. And lest we forget, even the swivel eyed seesaw riding gurning donkey that is Musk called for it not much more than a year ago.

Awful people, infantile overly sensitive spoiled bullies.

I fooking hate bullies, man.

I still use Twitter. It’s not as good as it once was.

I don’t care particularly for Elon Musk.

I don’t like some of the posts I see.

But there’s a very simple fix. I just ignore what I don’t like and use it for the things I do like.

I hear people say boycott this, ban that but you just end up edging closer and closer to a society of censorship. And I don’t want to live in that world.

You also make martyrs of people like Musk who play the free speech card.

I know a fair bit about St Pauli due to my German links and they have always been very political. They have every right to ditch Twitter but don’t be naive enough to think they’re not playing their own PR card here.

At the end of the day, just because you or I don’t like something, it doesn’t mean it’s wrong or should be outlawed unless it’s illegal.

The problem with social media, this country and much of the world right now is there is a lack of tolerance. People get so entrenched with their own views that anyone who dares disagree should be cancelled.

You may disagree with me and that’s not a bad thing. Just as long as you respect there may be a difference of opinion.

People champion free speech but with it comes free thinking. So if you want to use Twitter, then use it. If you don’t that’s fine as well.

But I definitely don’t think Ipswich should dump it just to join some sort of moral crusade that will no doubt end in another differing of beliefs somewhere down the line.

On the question on the op, regardless of my own political viewpoint (not a fan of Musk!), I think it's dangerous ground for the club to take a political stand in any direction, which is what it would be perceived as.

Aside from the strange idea that taking a political stance is 'dangerous' - which is a shameful state for our society to be in - how have we got to the point where taking a stand against hatred is 'political?'

There's nothing in their Tweet to suggest that it's because of Musk's ties to Trump, or his new position in his Government. They say it's because the platform has grown into a place full of hate (which it demonstrably has - there are stats showing how much hate speech has risen on there since he took over), and that they are worried it will influence elections (well, durr....)

I'd say it's far more dangerous NOT to be taking a stand against that.

I swear there are people who would be outraged if our club had said bad things about Hitler back in the '30s.

"Leave that out of football!" etc.

Freedom of speech? Yep gets my vote. But as with all rights, the right to freedom of speech comes with responsibility.

Even the French Revolution had this to say in the Declaration of the Rights of Man:

11. The free communication of ideas and opinions is one of the most precious of the rights of man. Every citizen may, accordingly, speak, write, and print with freedom, but shall be responsible for such abuses of this freedom as shall be defined by law.

https://avalon.law.yale.edu/18th_century/rightsof.asp

One of the issues with social media it seems to me is that those who abuse the right to freedom of speech on social media platforms are seldom held to account in any meaningful way (some high profile exceptions to this of course) and everything degenerates into the keyboard warrior's equivalent of "chat sh1t, get hit".

Those who operate these platforms claim no responsibility and it is indeed a tricky area - you can't fact check everything posted (well you could but it would take an age and cost a fortune). However, when a platform is effectively un-moderated and owned by an individual who seems happy to promote lies as not even just opinion but fact there has to come a point when things must change.
