Best single moment in time following Ipswich Town 23:04 - Dec 4 with 7450 viewsChurchman

Just one moment. Not a list. Just THE one that you could be transported back to for a moment in time. No explanations necessary. For me:

Behind the goal when John Wark scored the third goal at Highbury v West Brom in 1978

Agree when WArky planted that header it was a realisation of dreams for generations of my family

magilton's third against bolton. after the near miss seasons, and with the game feeling as if it had drifted away from us and our chance had gone yet again, it was a moment of unbelievable relief and exhilaration. nothing compares to that.

And so as the loose-bowelled pigeon of time swoops low over the unsuspecting tourist of destiny, and the flatulent skunk of fate wanders into the air-conditioning system of eternity, I notice it's the end of the show

I loathe Staus Quo so I am still blocking that out of my memory !

Can’t believe you put the boot in on the best live band in the land in the 1970s (the frantic four) before the drummer Coghlan the Lancaster left and those left produced rubbish.

I’m shocked and appalled, 😃 but will forgive just this once as this thread is generating so many good moments.

Some point in that second half at Barnsley in the League One promotion year, looking around the away end and just seeing Ipswich faces old and young hugging and realising we’d finally done something good.

Some great days since then, Exeter that season, Hull, Coventry and Huddersfield in the final week last year but I’ll always remember Barnsley as a very special day.

George Hirst's goal to make it 2-0 on that night.

Yes, it was only Barnsley and it was only League One but there was magic in the Yorkshire air that night, gives me goosebumps just thinking about it.

I've followed Town for over 50 years and attended all the big games home and abroad but in recent times not too much beats the feeling when the second goal went in against Exeter at the end of April 2023 and we knew it was going to be all right.

The sheer joy and relief at knowing we were definitely escaping that god-foresaken Division was unbelievable.

You’re only allowed one!! But all five are great 👍🏻 - even if I was in a pub watching the scores for the Exeter game. Similar to 92 when the only game I missed in the run in was Oxford away, due to work in the morning.

I was there for the others including the Inter game - yes, that was a good moment.

Travelling in a lift with Paul Lambert and dropping the smelliest fart known to man. (he was Norwich manager at the time, but would have done the same during his time here if I could have) I owned it and smiled.

Not a moment of any significance in the grand scheme of things, but Wilnis’ goal against Man Utd in 2000 has says stuck with me a la a special moment.

Failing that, after following town for 25 years the Sarmiento goal is right up there. Never seen Portman road like it. Was on Complete high for hours and hours after that. Have to watch that goal back a few times after every defeat this season to cleanse the mind.

But if you had to choose one or have both memories erased (Total Recall style without Sharon Stone), which would you choose?

Great thread Churchman.

If you're twisting my arm I would say the Magilton equaliser, the years of play-off failure were looking to be repeated and then that moment!!

Although the memory become ever more fuzzy! it will be replaced soon by McKenna's miracle of survival come May against West Ham!

Sing your heart out on Sunday my man!

Ahhh, the old ‘leaden cloud’ in the lift trick - on Lambert too! You deserve a medal.

That made me laugh out loud

Wow! Massive salute to you witnessing that. Brilliant. I wish I’d seen it and by most in the know that is the best ITFC performance ever.

But that’s a whole game. The question is what moment in that game? Fourth goal? Second? Final whistle?

After the game as they jeered our group with all sorts of broken English abuse , I just don’t think they could believe how we dismantled them as they were such a strong team back then , Platini , Repp , Neskinnes to name but a few world stage stars …….unbelievable Jeff .

His team stank the place out when they went down a level, so he got his revenge.

Sorry I couldn't whittle it down to One!

For some reason these two trump Wembley play-off final.

You have to have a McKenna moment, this guy has been a revelation. And I hope the fans can repay him now with some unconditional support over the coming games.

Here here ….in McKenna we trust .

End of the game at Coventry last season. Knew we’d done it then after 20 odd years of going to the vast majority of games home and away, and reflecting on how much has changed in my life in that period. Kids, wife, friends, jobs etc.

I’ve no idea…. We’ve had good times and bad, and I think this thread has covered most of them, and all are worthy candidates.

A couple of others that no-one else has suggested - probably not at the very top of anyone’s list, but deserve a mention as good moments nonetheless:
- Winning at Anfield in 2000.
- Chaplow’s last minute winner at Watford (who doesn’t love a last minute winner away from home at a key time in the season?)
- Any win over Norwich, but my favourite is the 2-0 at their place in December 1992.
- Taking the lead at the Etihad this season. We all know how that turned out, but for a few moments we were in disbelief thinking “surely we can’t trump everything that’s gone before in the last couple of seasons by winning here?”
- Peterborough away in the L1 run in.
- Helsingborg away.

There’ll be loads more I’ve forgotten….

But which is your personal best moment? Just one, otherwise your memory will be wiped!!!

I was at the 92 Norwich game. Went nuts when the second goal went in, right in front of us. The locals weren’t happy.

The Charlton last minute winner in Dec 2014 was a blast too.

Hreidarsson’s bar dive v Bradford was a good moment. I wasn’t far away when he did it and everyone loved it.

It’s been said several times already, but the PO Semi Final home leg in 2000 sneaks it.

Sarmiento’s winner v Southampton is right up there with the best of them though.

It’s a great choice. That was the most extraordinary game I’ve ever attended for so many reasons.

Southampton - agreed. It’s up there alright.

What a decision.
Alright.
A tie between Osbourne 1-0.

And my 16 year old daughter getting back into the car after the Bolton game. She just said "Gosh". Do you have any idea what it takes to get a teenager to say gosh !

And said teenager, 20 years later buying her old man his first season ticket for 40 years.

I'm filling up a bit ....

Also the 1978 semi~final at Highbury but immediately after the game, just feeling exhilarated at witnessing such a fine spectacle of football, from both teams, and then saying out loud to my brothers 'Bloody hell, I have just realised we are going to Wembley' and them, and everyone else around me, finding that penny dropping and getting exuberant again.

There were a lot of us following online - being only the dawn of the internet era, that meant dial-up, which meant repeated disconnections and mega hair-tearing, everyone screeching into the ether and onto here “what’s happening?!”

Events and goals were happening so fast, posts crossing each other with the latest and “I don’t believe it!” Place was the wildest I’ve ever seen it, before or since - it was the so near but so far “instant” comms that weren’t yet up to speed, literally, that did it. I do remember screeching with joy at the final whistle - lucky was living in a remote place with no near neighbours!
