For builders to maximise profit they need to mstch, or be slightly short of, demand. The incentives currently on offer by builders suggest supply exceeds current demand, There is a significant difference between demand and need. Perhaps demand will increase once interest rates fall but significant interest rate reductions appear to be a long way away. Actions, not rhetoric, are what is needed. This country has had it,it’s got far to many people in it. It’s all getting to busy and nothing can cope. That’s not my opinion that’s a fact. It’s only going to get worse. The End.

You would think that amongst the million or so that arrive every year, there would be plenty of skilled workers. Probably not the skills that the UK requires. There are other reasons of course, planning is not going to be as easy as angela raynor thinks it will be. Shes clearly not though this through very well.

Thing is Benters, if you participated in the political process in the last 20 some years it’s partly your fault. Both parties think more or less the same about more or less everything. I did try warning you all. I’m not saying this if you but labour won the election on the basis of enormous centralisation and “plans” and controls, ignoring the wishes of local people for instance when it comes to housing developments. Of course the great irony is we don’t actually need any more houses. There are loads already, but they’re in the hands of landlords and rentier capitalists. If they were seized and redistributed to councils we would solve homelessness at a stroke.

There are some very peculiar adn contradictory views being expressed in this thread. If we had enough houses, prices would not keep climbing as they do. The prevalence of renters etc does not impact on that given that rents are also rising steeply. All these things go up because supply does not meet demand. If house prices did not keep climbing due to lack of supply, they would be much less interesting to investors and landlords. The admission of the best part of a million people last year to the country by the previous government alone means there must be a need for another half million homes of some description, pushing prices up further. None of these things are the fault of the current government, but are things that need to be fixed. Builders have insufficient capacity because the previous government consistently under planned and undershot their own targets on house buildnig for 14 years. Builders have been allowed to slow building to drive prices in the market. To who's benefit?

The rich are far too invested in property. A lack of availability to the general public is the plan.

I should add that Reform types need to think very carefully about WHY the last government let in so many people depsite the culture wars rhetoric. Could it be because the low wage economy imposed by them meant that things like public services, the NHS etc only had a chance of functioning with support of large waves of immigration?

That sounds like a convincing argument to reintroduce state funded large scale council house building.
