Luke Woolfenden is the absolute don 07:31 - Jan 6 with 7726 viewschicoazul

Think about that guy, the most Suffolk man in the world, and what he’s been through, coming in as a young player having loans not getting in the team bombed out by Cook, gets back in under Mcgreal and immediately improves the team, becomes a mainstay of two promotions, gets dropped for sexy new Prem players, gets back in and immediately improves the team.
He wins headers he wins tackles he’s a beast he doesn’t need to be fast but can be.
After a game he shrugs his shoulders win or lose and goes walking his dogs.
Why isn’t he the first name on the team sheet? Why isn’t his name sung from the rafters? This guy is our Paul McGrath our Paulo Maldini our Fernando Hierro.

I can't remember which ex player/ manager said of Woolfy but....in L1 he was a L1 defender. In the Championship, he'll be a Champ defender and in the Prem he'll be a Prem defender....or words to that effect.

I have always rated Woolfy and backed him.
Sure, as a young defender, he has made mistakes (and sometimes lose focus) but always seem to come back stronger.
Unsure if he is a Premier League defender in the long run, but under McKenna he has the absolute best possibility to be.

Haha .... yes I love him, think he is hugely underrated outside and perhaps inside Ipswich. Hasn't put a foot wrong this season when he's played. Looks as if he'll eventually be phased out but we've all thought that before so who knows, the guy's staying power is immense and everyone's got to be so proud of him.

On a slight tangent – we suddenly seem to have a pool of seriously good centre-backs.

He is criminally underrated. He's played nearly 200 games for us and not looked out of place at all in the PL. Who was the last academy player we produced that had such an impact for us on the pitch over such a long period of time?

It's a pity but I have a feeling McKenna sees it differently.

Hopefully Woolf will still be with us after Jan.

"...McKenna sees it differently."

Given he was brought back in by KM as he tweaked our approach and has played exceptionally well....I suspect that KM rates him.

Let's see, he didn't need dropping when we signed oshea but did, and we've now got godfrey, so wolfy could be out the side by end of the month

Some lads on the tube after the game yesterday were adamant he's off to Rangers. Cant really work out where that's come from, nor do I know how much I believe it. Feels odd to have bought him back for this new formation, displacing Burgess in the process just to ship him off. Godfrey isn't going to be match fit straight away is he? The system we're now playing means we need extra cover in all of those positions in general, although squad spaces need to be thought about... However think it's clear he's been bought in with a view to cover Axel / the right side, if anything his addition spells the end of time for H Clarke rather than Woolf I would imagine.

You can't play two left footers in a back 3 hence wolfy picked over burgess imo

That’s a pity, because Burgess is a VERY good defender. Woolfenden is playing well but he’s sat between the Club’s two best centre backs, so is well covered. He potentially got away with two hand ball incidents yesterday, so again I fail to see the idolisation of him by some on here.

We have become much better since playing with 5 across the back, as you’d expect. There could be various combinations once all defenders are fit. I wonder if you could play

Axel…. O’ Shea…… Greaves……Burgess….Davis

Or

Axel ……O’Shea…….Godfrey…..Greaves…….Davis

I prefer defenders who have physical presence and strong heading ability, and unfortunately Woolfie doesn’t do it for me…..

For his weaknesses though Arnie, his calmness on the ball has clearly helped since he's come back in.

He's also been part of a defence that themselves had conceded just 1 goal across 3 games ( Yes im ignoring the 2 pens yesturday, i know there were conceded, but that's not on the back three) you get my point lol.

But no Greaves and Burgess wouldn't work, if you have a inverted winger coming across davis, you've then got two left footers who again aren't balanced correctly to deal with a player running across their right side. Thnk back to the palace goal ( think it was palace) where Greaves got absolutely done just by a simple should drop and move to his right hand side.

Personally, I don't mind wolfy at all, he's fine, hasn't done anything less than the other two centre backs imo.

Yes he is calm on the ball that’s true. It’s a shame Burgess and Greaves couldn’t be in the same back line , but I accept your explanation, thank you. Out of interest, do you know if Godfrey is a left or right footer?

I definitely think we are much better with this formation and I really hope McKenna continues with it, because if he does, I honestly think it’ll see us stay up.

At some point you are going to have to give him some credit

League 1 at best
Championship at best
Only comfortable in the Prem because he's between our best 2 centre halfs

The sooner you bite the bullet and accept you were wrong about him, the sooner you can stop embarrassing yourself every time his name is mentioned

I'm yet to be convinced by Greaves.

It's good to have him as an option - he's probably an upgrade on George Edmundson but I haven't seen anything that makes me think he should keep Wolfenden (or Burgess) out of the team.

I like the 'most Suffolk man in the world' accolade. (There's an old boy who plays dominoes in the pub in Groton who I think would be a worthy opponent in a play-off.)

It is hard to be open minded when we've already decided on our opinion on someone. You don't like him, no idea why, but it is not based on his recent performances.

Watch the last three games again, and you'll see:
how cleverly Woolfie directs the defence, his calmness on the ball, a number of runs with the ball to create different angles of passes to drive us forward, immediately positioning himself to be available to Walton, a wide variety of important blocks, his covering of the other defenders.

He's not perfect, makes mistakes as they all do. But in this system he complements the others really well.

Now McKenna might feel O'Hara would be even better at that role and bring Godfrey in on the right and move O'Hara to the centre. O'Hara is class and I trust the manager. Be harsh on Woolfie though.

Please try and see the quality that Woolfie possesses!

I wonder if we might have had some slightly different conversations about some of Muric's kamikaze passing out from the back if Woolfenden had been playing more.

We played Chambers, Smith and Berra many times together, either as a 3, or (in fact mostly) with Chambers at right back.

Smith and Berra were both left footed.
