Jaden Philogene yesterday- 10:14 - Feb 23 with 3396 viewsLibero

I found his performance to be a very frustrating watch.
Pulling the ball out of the air, just to pass it to the invisible man, slowing the game down in situations where he should be attacking the full back, taking shots from silly positions and generally not playing with the kind of intensity I expect of a Kieran McKenna player.

What *really* annoyed me though is that once the game was gone, he started to play and actually attack his full back directly, put in crosses, link up with Hutchinson.

Everyone’s entitled to a bad game and it’s still very early days for Jaden at the club, but I do have a few concerns based over what I’ve seen thus far.

Here’s hoping it’s just part of the settling in period.

I questioned our transfer policy a few weeks back.

I don't see why we need Philogene or Godfrey.

What must Harry be thinking seeing some scummer take his place and lose us the game?

I think the transfer policy itself isn’t an issue - we sign young players with premier league potential and occasionally scattering a bit of premier league experience, like Godfrey.

Obviously I’m talking about Philogene and the nuances of his performance in this thread but it’s clear Godfrey is well of the pace atm.
There’s no doubting that when he’s fit/match sharp he’s a tremendous defender with bags of premier league experience, so while it’s not quite clicking, he was a sound choice of signing theoretically.

Godfrey didn’t lose us the game, he got beat by son a couple of times the same as most defenders have for years before him, all 5 of our other defenders in the box marking thin air is what cost those goals. Godfrey wasn’t great but far beyond the cause of those goals.

That was a bit of a struggle first half wasn't it? His positioning was all over the place, and Son had him on toast. As soon as he was booked it was clear he'd get hooked at half time.

Really thought he'd be a decent addition for us, but he seems utterly lost in a league he used to be fine with.

I am interested to hear what others thought of Philogene’s performance.

Not sure if I am right with this. But has the number of corners we achieve really dried up recently.

With two inverted wingers looking to cut in everytime we've appeared to vastly reduce the number of corners we have.

But on philogene. He looks a bit lost. You see a mixture of the hull and villa philogene imo. Kms job is to bring out the hull version that got him the move back to villa to begin with. We saw it in the game at times. But those slow down moments were frustrating.

My biggest concern is when a ball was trickling out for a throw that a OAP would have been able to keep in and he gave up. His attitude just doesn't seem the same is what we have gone for over the last few years both on and off the pitch (in his interviews) but McKenna knows best so will continue to give him a chance.

I think a lot of people have made their mind up already so how he actually plays is almost irrelevant.

Tremendous defender that's a bit over the top last season at Everton he was dire never played in Italy his poor as was shown by a 33 Yr old Son yesterday .

I was surprised when someone mentioned the EADT had given him man of the match as I thought he was pretty poor for the most part. Not much end product, a few promising moves broke down through him either slowing it down or passing to an opposition player under not very much pressure. I'm sure there's a very good player in there but whether we'll see it this season, I'm not sure.

He’s been here five minutes. How many threads and comments on him now? Played what three games in a very poor team that concedes goals with ease and has next to nothing in midfield.

I get that he’s the latest hate figure, taking the crown from Jack Clarke, not least because of the Villa nonsense, but give the bloke a chance.

The problem yesterday was not the forwards, whatever their limitations. It was behind them that collapsed on itself during the first half and Spurs were given all the time in the world.

I’ve seen our ‘supporters’ pile in on Hutchinson and Clarke too (he even got dropped into a thread about our fullback ffs. Talk about booting the bloke) - the scorer and provider. All the forwards gave the ball away more than I’d like, including Delap, but part of that was because they were under pressure from two or three very good players every time they went anywhere near the ball.

Compare that to Son who was given the freedom of Portman Rd yesterday and he wasn’t the only one.

He's so lightweight and weak that where normal players have their full surname he has to have his first name on his shirt to minimise the burden of weight of letters he has to bear.

I think he will be a great player for us. Especially in the championship. My only worry for him is he sometimes has the look of a player who is not trying. Reminds me of Darren Currie all those years back. Someone in the crowd was always on his back.

Come on Jaden, you can do it for us.

But we have Clarke and Broadhead and Hutchinson if you want to put Philogene on the right, too many players with little to choose between them.

Has had a poor start to life - with the odd flash of good moments - but need more at this level. Still early.

Jack Clarke more of a concern to me, been here nearly a season now and looks so far off the pace. He’s very easy to play against, offers very very little.

The problem with philogene and Clarke is that they are both not quick enough to beat a man in a foot race, we had a couple of moments with balls in behind where neither of them could get past the last defender. There was a 3rd opportunity with hirst also, all 3 leading to us fouling the defender. With no ogbene or burns and no pace breaking from midfield either our goals will come from just delap or maybe Hutchinson who have the bit of
Pace to get behind opposition defence. Clarke has come on a lot , philogene probably will but I don’t think he’s close to being as good as Hutchinson and I don’t think he is any where near worth what was paid for him which will be his downfall, same for muric. Expectation will exceed reality due to their cost. Is he a good player, of course no doubt but I don’t think a premier league player and in championship is he any better than burns or broadhead, again I don’t think so enough to justify what was paid for him.

Incredibly frustrating. What baffles me, is that the 6 months at Villa seems to have absolutely obliterated his confidence and drive.

To me, he looks scared on the pitch. Scared to make a mistake, so will therefore go backwards rather than forwards.

What’s also interesting is that when you compare him to Hutchinson, there’s actually no comparison! Hutchinson seems light years ahead of him at present.

Think we all need to hope that it’s going to take him a little time to settle in. At present, he looks nowhere near his £22m price tag.

He was playing at Hull who were not exactly that good last season, and playing alright against the likes of QPR and Rotherham is not really quite the same.

Our recruitment has been bad but we’ve also spent way over the odds on all of these players, we have been done up good and prop.

If we ever come back up we can’t continue with this recruitment policy.

Whilst I completely respect your opinion, comments like 'very easy to play against' and 'so far off the pace' are a little bit ridiculous. He wasn't bad yesterday, he just struggled to really impact the game in a very positive way like much of the team.

He's 24 and he's ripped up the Championship for the past two years proving he is in fact very difficult to play against. Jaden Philogene is 23 and in a similar situation.

The Premier League is just a different beast. They are quite clearly in a position where they are not quite good enough to be good prem players and are way too good for the champ. That is why they're playing for us and not Fulham, Villa, Brentford etc.

If we go down and come up, both will be better for the experience and we will have two great players on our hands.

We will see the best of Philogene and J Clarke next season in the Championship, because that was the intended platform for them to develop on, not the PL. We have been promoted one, maybe two seasons ahead of schedule. We are actually victims of our own success.

Philogene has definitely taking Clarke's position as Number One boo boy. Godfrey isn't far behind.

I agree with you completely with Philogene, its far far too early to write him off. He fits the model of players we are working with and its plainly obvious that they aren't all going to be like Delap (who has pretty much surprised everyone).

We seem to have acquired a large number of entitled fans recently... is it because of the Premium League or just how the world is now. Whatever way, its not great and has been one of the worst aspects of this season.

Oh come on, of course he is the latest scapegoat. He’s been here 5 weeks and played 3 games for a poor team with no midfield. Not every player does a Paul Mariner and tear it up from the off. One or two do, like Delap, but it’s very rare. I thought he did some good things yesterday and got swamped or made the wrong choices at other times. Like all the forwards did. He was up against top players.

Clarke? Somebody has said he’s had virtually a full season. He’s actually made 5 starts and 15 sub appearances - again in a poor team and we are actually in Feb. Against Man City he was left having to pick the ball up from his own penalty area. Does anyone truly expect anyone bar Maradona to do that on a regular basis?

Played in his right position with a better midfield and a more settled team and you’ll see a much better player. Oh and he made the goal yesterday, not that it stopped the moaning around me.

It intrigues me how people love to pile in on our own players. It’s the worst I’ve ever known it (worse than Leicester’s forum where a bloke called Skipp and the Board are getting pelters) and it has to be bad when the Captain and Manager have to ask people to lay off. But no, in the boot still goes. I’m bewildered at what people want and clearly they believe that giving a player no time at all and as much abuse as possible rather than encouragement is the way forward.

The loanees though tend to be spared the worst of the vitriol but there it is. The question ought to be how and why did we let in another hatful of goals at home.
