Phillips 09:26 - Mar 9 with 2993 viewsDJR

I thought he had a very good game yesterday, with Cajuste not far behind, and we more than held our own in midfield against a physically strong Palace team.

I know he gets a lot of stick (something I don't think he has fully deserved) but he has impressed me every time he has played since Christmas.

But however good our midfield (and I think with Phillps and Cajuste we are probably seeing what McKenna hoped for when we bought them), we won't win games if the attacking players behind Delap don't do the business.

I have always liked Phillips and in my opinion he should be playing every game

I did not.
In fact I remarked in the pub afterwards that his distribution was woeful at times, and he also wasted that late free-kick. He tends to find a lot of space, but then his choice of pass or accuracy of pass, I'm never sure which, is often way off.
Cajuste looked very classy at times, but our whole midfield is not dynamic enough. However, I'm also a big fan of keeping a settled side and not making lots of changes, so whoever are deemed the midfield players, please let us stick with them and let the relationships build.
I think the whole team has suffered from the chopping and changing (a lot of it enforced by suspensions and injuries) of personnel this season.

If Phillips was a younger player who' we'd bought from a Championship club who we felt could well progress further - I'd be more than happy with him. But he's the most high-profile player we've got and most likely on the highest wages - so the bar has to be set higher for him. Based on that, he's hardly pulling up trees. He's doing fine doing the grunt work, but he's hardly bossing games. And I do expect now and again for him to look a class above with his passing. Don't feel he should get stick, but don't understand why some feel he's doing great. Just a bit underwhelmed by him.

We’ll get him up to speed fitness wise, then he’ll flourish for Leeds in the PL next season.

I totally appreciate your opinion and think there is merit to a settled side but yesterday he was one of our worst performers statistically.

Accurate passes - 34/42 (81%)
Accurate long balls - 4/9 (44%)
Ground duels won - 3/8 (38%)
Aerial duels won - 1/5 (20%)
Tackles won - 1/2 (50%)
Interceptions - 0
Successful dribbles - 0/1 (0%)
Accurate crosses - 0/2 (0%)

Poor defensively, offered little by way of taking us forward.

Compare that to Lerma who had a pretty average game in CM by all accounts ...

Accurate passes - 25/40 (63%)
Accurate long balls - 5/12 (42%)
Ground duels won - 5/8 (63%)
Aerial duels won - 4/5 (80%)

This is our highest paid and most established Premier League player. No dribbles, not one interception, won 4 of his 13 duels, just two tackles attempted all game ...

Him and Cajuste are comfortably our best midfield pairing, shame that for a variety of reasons it’s taken the whole season to arrive at it when it’s very likely too late.

There's lies, damn lies and statistics but I go by my own eye and wouldn't put too much weight on fotmob ratings given it gave Clarke 6.7 and Philogene 6.6, in contrast to Phillips' 5.4.

A tangent, but Adam Wharton showed why he’s the future of England’s midfield yesterday. What a player.

I don't give the 'rating' any kind of credence. However, the match actions are just what you saw with your eyes. He's a CM for a relegation threatened side in a tight competitive game and he won 4/13 duels, made two tackles all game, no interceptions, no successful dribbles etc etc.

You might be choosing not to see them but these things happened. Forget about the rating, his match actions show he was the 4th best midfielder on the park yesterday and outperformed by Cajuste quite considerably.

That does not mean I think Morsy should play etc, just that he was not good yesterday.

Interested to know, what did you think he did well enough to call it a very good game?

I think he probably will go to Leeds but I have doubts he'll flourish. They'll be expecting the Phillips from 5 years ago but I don't think he's shown this season that he still has that in his locker. We haven't even seen a glimpse of his former self. At his best for us he's been a solid cm option with injury issues.

We can obviously agree to disagree but things like closing down are also a part of being a midfielder and I thought he did that well.

And the fact that we had 45% possession in an away game for the majority of which we weren't losing suggests to me that something went right yesterday.

Indeed, he got a pat on the back from McKenna after the game who kept him on the pitch for the whole game, rather than bringing Morsy on in his place.

Totally, agree to disagree but if 'closing down' or work rate is a measure of success for a Premier League player then we are in deep deep trouble.

Just my opinion but as a fan base I feel our expectations of him have just continued to diminish as the season has gone on. He's 29, a Manchester City player and capped England international as recently as two years ago.

He has to impact the game beyond closing players down.

I saw a comment earlier re Leeds taking him back. Beyond having faith that they can turn him back into that player (As west ham and we assumed) there is absolutely no evidence he is anything more than a midfield option for a struggling PL side. They would be mad to invest the same as what we have in him.

Anyway, 10 more games, lets hope he can pull it together.

OP:…… “we won't win games if the attacking players behind Delap don't do the business.”

Delap needs to learn to look up and see who else is around him, and when to pass the ball to a team mate who is possibly better placed to score than him. He’s a raw talent atm, who basically puts his head down and runs from the half way line towards the goal, ending invariably in either a dive to get a free kick, or blasting his shot into row Z. He also needs to work on holding the ball up more. Overall a very first season in the PL, but still a lot to learn and development to come.

I thought he did OK, but that’s the thing. He’s reputed to be on £150k a week, and a top notch England international. He should be bossing games, head and shoulders above anyone else, but he’s just not. For me he’s been a big disappointment. I hope he stays fit for our last 10 games and finally repays some of our investment.

With the exception of Southampton and Leicester, all of the teams we have played are composed of Premier League-level players, and even those two (as well as the rest of the other teams) have squads assembled at a cost which is at least twice the cost of our squad, so to think one player in our team should be bossing games is in my view rather unrealistic.

Spot on, I think some people have a very warped idea of what Phillips is meant to be doing out there and also the level of what we're up against.

Last minute free kick aside, I also think he had a good game. Covered a lot of ground. Always showing for the ball and in the main looking for the positive pass.
His stop start season hasn't helped but I think he's showing some form now. Keep him fit and I think he's a big player for us during the run in.

Distortion becomes somehow pure in its wildness.

I'm sure people are just thinking he's had s good came because of who he is. It was yet another game he's not influenced whatsoever, gave the ball away punting it long countless times to nobody. Look at Morsy's performance against forest (an arguably tougher midfield to play against) and then look at Phillips against Palace..

While I agree on the whole, his ball retention was pretty dismal on Saturday, no? A lot of aimless lofted balls to no-one. He just doesn't seem to have the sharpness-of-mind and self-belief to play those penetrating, killer passes anymore.
