We won’t know until it’s built - not having a pop at you but it’s quite easy to be negative at something new simply because it goes against tradition. But like it or not, that’s what new stadium developments have to be like.
Even in the smaller setting of Portman Road, MA stated that any stadium development has to be for the benefit of the town as well as for the club. Football stadiums have to much more than a football stadium with a few burger vans outside of it.
I take your point and I'm not against progress or new structures. And I'm probably guilty of being too traditionalisy at times.
But imo there's a fine line between befitting a place and community and between rampant greed and the absorbtion of culture into corporate 'stakeholder' nonsense.
Why can't it just be a football ground with a few burger vans though? To play devil's advocate, that seemed to work well for nearly a century. Why must everything be optimised?

What’s even funnier is lower down on this board Bournemouth are being hammered for NOT building a bigger and better stadium. Now MUFC are wrong for doing exactly that.

Ok, this might well be a long answer. And this is how I see it - I’m sure many will disagree.
I agree that football has gone too far in worshipping the dollar but unless society changes drastically then that’s the game most clubs have to play.
The burger van might well have served football for 100 years but a lot of fans have moved on and demand more than just that.
A lot on here (and I’m not saying you) bang on about football in the 1970s and 80s as being proper but let’s be honest, football in the mid 80s was on its arse. Attendances were much lower and stadiums were enormous toilets. And that is due to some fans smashing up pubs and town centres as well as being unable not to attend a match without having a fight. The knuckle draggers were bankrupting football - and football had to change.
Consequently football grounds - with Sky coverage etc - became more popular again especially with families - and to make it family friendly facilities become more expensive and so the need for almost 365 Westfield style stadiums.

I don’t understand why the prospect of better facilities for fans at a football stadium stir up so much negative feelings. New stadiums are expensive and need to utilise as much revenue as possible be it where fans eat or commercial superstores.
The tent does look hideous.
Clearly just added in to create a beacon that can be seen for miles.

Really fair points about the state of things in 70s/80s. The improvements were good for the game and we don't want to go back to that period which in reality was unsafe and not in a good way.
And it's good that the stadiums became family friendly and more inclusive.
It's just a shame that the chase of commercial dollar seems to trump all else. United is a business before a football team and have been for some time.

It is a business, no argument from me about that.
Germany seems to have struck the record gut chord with both modernising but not going too far. Have to admit that I’m not completely knowledgeable about whether I’m correct in thinking this or not.

For arguments sake, if someone said ‘upgrade PR’ or ‘spend the money on the team to be a club in the PL for 10/12/15 years’
What you picking?
Upgrade the ground, training ground, invest in the infrastructure, youth system, scouting, women’s team, better suit for Bluey, Fanzone and community stuff.
Build foundations and the club will grow.

Stadiums don’t have a soul as they are, just buildings. What makes a soul of a football stadium is the atmosphere generated by the fans as well as the memories made over time.
But some stadiums are far better at generating an atmosphere than others - we only have to compare the old North stand compared to the new one.
The acoustics / low roof / terraces and position of away fans all led to an atmosphere that simply hasn't been recreated with the current North stand. Of course the new North has lots of positives - but it's frustrating how stands and grounds are built often without consideration of the atmosphere.
Got no issues with MU wanting to knock OT down - it really is a dump to be honest - but hope they create something special. Spurs seem to have done it at White Hart Lane - ridiculous corporate nonsense (to keep the money men happy) whilst still having a stadium with great views and noise for the masses.

The North Stand doesn’t really serve the needs of the overall stadium but I guess that there are also badly designed old stadiums as well.
Not sure whether the NS can be improved acousticly with new technologies at hand - possibly someone on here will know.
I think when Chelsea wanted to completely knock down Stamford Bridge the purposed newer stadium would have had 25% of its capacity for corporate hospitality- way too much. Some club do have gone further in their pursuit of cash than others.
While you say, a while ago on another thread you no ebtioned th at one of your friends had written a book about football selling out - what was the name of that book/ author? Cheers.

Newcastle United have one of these horrific shipping container set ups behind the Gallowgate end. £6.50 pp in a plastic glass. A venue for people who don't do pubs. Ultimately driven by greed. Does it really enhance the match day experience?
Takes stupid money per week. £400k per week. On a match day the traditional watering holes are well down in trade. Horrendously short sighted by the local council for granting this project. The iconic Strawberry Pub nearby believe had seating available an hour before kick off.

Well worth a read - really is quite forensic in how the game has been sold down the river in the pursuit of wealth - at the expense of ordinary fans.
The chapters on the German model are very eye opening - I was lucky to get an invite to a couple of games (with Ade) at Dortmund and Koln - really is a different experience and highlighted how it can be done so much better than we do in the UK.

One day one of those things will tip over and fire into the crowd.
That said, remember Tarrico dropping off the ball by helicopter?! 😂😂
I'd like to see the Risk Assessment for those things. Absolute disaster waiting to happen. Who is going to prison if people are killed? Because that is no unforeseen accident, it's going to happen, just a case of where and when.
For me it's not about the stadium but the people in it, could be an 11k capacity mini-stadium or 100k mega stadium but it has to be a place which is home and loved by the clubs fans. However when I see those Man U plans on the news I don't see something which is home to a football club, just an entertainment venue. Really hard to express but a football ground has to be a place for football fans who really feel the club and the place. Some of the biggest clubs just feel like they have lost their soul, we fans are not just extras in a TV extravaganza, often it now feels that is exactly what we are.
