Oh dear, so basically 8M profit? That would be criminal. No one expected this type of season from him but if true Ashton might take a PR hit there! I wonder what needed to be put in there to get it over the line but that's a disaster.

How can you criticise any deal where we make a profit? Delap has been a revelation this season. Would you have preferred we didn't sign him at all?

Indeed.

Ah well. 100% return is better than nothing.

We've only paid £15m, as the £5m add-ons were contingent on survival.

Future value is all part of the model isn't it? We will be selling him probably 30M under his true market if this report is correct.

It's worse case really, he was a revelation but didn't keep us up and now him and Muric will basically be a wash in terms of spend and returns.

Maybe that's the only way of getting him to sign with us to start with last Summer if the release clause was not astronomical. The media seem to think he had plenty of other admirers when we signed him. Maybe the release clause tipped the balance to us (and a call from Ed)?

....BECAUSE he's been a revelation.

Yet we are gonna make peanuts on it.

I've been telling people this for months and months, but just been shouted down and told that Ashton would never agree to such a crap deal.

Even the person now writing the story told me I was talking rubbish.

Funny.

This is why it might be plausible - nobody knew he was going to be such a hit, including Ashton, so should probably not criticise too much if this turns out to be true. It's still doubling our money.

Who was the last player we sold for £15m more than we paid for them? It's obviously far from ideal but kind of it what it is. We are going to be better off than Southampton who he turned down in the summer and didn't get the benefit of having him for a season.

Who saw him taking the PL by storm and doing what he has done? I am not sure even McKenna or he himself would have done.

Not really, 20% will go to City, I bet his goals made it a 20M deal as well.

...the clauses for the additional £5m.

If it was on appearances and goals then there's every chance we've had to pay it.

In which case we'll make £8m on an outlay of £20m. Not great given his performance levels and his actual true value in the open market.

Obviously everyone will say that none of this is true, but then they said that about the release clause.

No no no, if it's not Liam Delap himself putting out a video then you'll soon find there will be posters along to tell you to stop talking the club down, spreading negativity etc etc.

Funnily enough, it's disappointing but I still think it's a fairly good deal from an investment perspective. Maybe Ashton was in line with the half of the forum that thought we'd finish top half and so didn't expect us to trigger this

But what are you supposed to do if that's the deal on offer? It would have been a worse deal if we didn't sign him at all and he went to Southampton.

Daft argument. We haven't been involved in these kind of economics ever, especially after 22 years out.

They were very high on him for a long time, without knowing what it took to get this over the line I am not going to defend this one. Some Champ players get purchased for 40M these days.

Huge shame if true.

We do know what it took to get the deal over the line though. It was reported at the time the deal was identical for us and Southampton and Delap had to choose. So would you rather he went to Southampton?

If true (and the name of one of the authors certainly lends it more credence than other reports on this subject) this would appear to be a fairly woeful piece of negotiating on Ashton's part, especially if the clause opens the club up to being doubly shafted upon relegation.

You ain't a beauty but, hey, you're alright.
