If it was on appearances and goals then there's every chance we've had to pay it.
In which case we'll make £8m on an outlay of £20m. Not great given his performance levels and his actual true value in the open market.
Obviously everyone will say that none of this is true, but then they said that about the release clause.

They were very high on him for a long time, without knowing what it took to get this over the line I am not going to defend this one. Some Champ players get purchased for 40M these days.

If true (and the name of one of the authors certainly lends it more credence than other reports on this subject) this would appear to be a fairly woeful piece of negotiating on Ashton's part, especially if the clause opens the club up to being doubly shafted upon relegation. | |
