There is definitely a problem for working class boys in education (of all ethnicities, but it's true that white boys fall under that 'you've got it great, stop complaining' mantra). It needs to be addressed. But this really isn't the place.

Football doesn't have a working class problem (except among the fans who are being priced out, of course). It does have a coaches-from-ethnic-minorities problem, which the club is trying to address *with a specific scheme*.

That's great. More power to them.

Why do people think that trying to give someone a leg-up is ruining chances for everyone else? It's literally *adding* a position for people of colour through a specific scheme.

They're not going to replace Kieran McKenna with a random black woman off the street to meet a quota.

I agree with most of what you've said there but it's not clear from the bit of the advert Lowe has shared whether this is *adding* a position or whether the club has a vacancy it needs to fill and has spotted a nice way of filling it without taking on all the costs of doing so themselves. The club wouldn't be the first employer to do something like that.

It would be interesting to know whether Southampton FC ever took advantage of similar schemes while Mr Lowe was their chairman/CEO/whatever he was.

Thanks.

Would be a real shame if the best person for the role was a boring white British man, and could help push the club on, but couldn’t even apply.

FWIW, I hope whoever the best person is gets the job. Can only benefit our club.

The best person should get the job - fully agree. But sometimes underrepresented groups need more encouragement to create much more of a talent pool.

Once upon the time the best people for certain jobs were privately educated fellas whose daddy was well respected in that field. Now, even through that’s still an issue, it’s less so due to higher education being more assessable.

Further down the line, hopefully these schemes won’t be needed as no one group will feel that it isn’t for them.

Like you say, it's not clear. So it's really not worth getting upset about and shouting racism

A few people will probably get upset about this but it’s a PL initiative designed to help people who are underrepresented in football.

https://www.premierleague.com/news/2200292

It’s funded by the PL and has been backed by Governments (both Labour and Tory). The underlying aim is ‘that after their placements, CIDS coaches will achieve sustainable coaching positions, where they can be successful and visible role models and will inspire the next generation of coaches from a diverse background’.

It has nothing to do with university or higher education. It’s about role models and inspiration - the fact that football coaches are predominantly white (like the country) highlights that white working class kids can already aspire to be like their coaches if they wish to.

Nothing to get angry about.

Sounds like it's win/win/win.

The Prem has benefitted massively from a diverse group of players and are giving something back.

The club get a free extra coach and potentially find a gem to hire full time.

The candidate gets an opportunity they would have been unlikely to get.

Sounds good to me.

Truly impaired.

Reading the screenshot it seems that the vacancy is for a fixed-term employment and development post for an academy coach in season 2025/2026 under the Coach Inclusion and Diversity Scheme. The words 'working in partnership with the Premier League' suggest that the post is at least partly funded by the Premier League.

The club has seen an opportunity to recruit an academy coach on a 12 month contract, and not have to pay the full cost of that. Whether that's an additional person or a role that would be filled anyway at the club's expense isn't clear.

We can't be the only club doing this. It's a bit of positive discrimination, and people's views on the rights and wrongs of that will no doubt differ. However, it's probably not a bad thing for the academy's coaching staff to reflect the backgrounds of the players.

What happens at the end of the fixed term contract is unclear from what's been shared. That's an interesting question.

- edited to correct dates.

Possibly not when you’re stuck on a motorway in a big jam and they say that they are hungry and you realise that you didn’t pack any snacks for that eventuality.

I would assume that's not the case, as it would be illegal to discriminate on race/gender in any direction. But they can push for more candidates from ethnic minorities and women, perhaps give some preference in the initial sift.

See the "Employing people with protected characteristics" section on here: https://www.gov.uk/employer-preventing-discrimination/recruitment

I don't like Rupert Lowe.

But I think his error here (if he's made one) is to take the words he's posted from the advert at face value rather than making the assumption that you make. If advert is unlawful (and I haven't seen the whole thing, so I have no idea), then Lowe surely has a fair point. If it's not unlawful, then it could certainly be a lot clearer.

People of colour clearly need to be given a fair (and that means fairer than at present) opportunity in football coaching, management and administration. Myself, I do not see the existence of particular jobs that are /only/ open to such candidates as being the answer.

Personally I favour the 'Rooney rule' (and no, I don't /just/ mean "never employ Wayne Rooney as a coach", although that too is a sound proposition).

I don’t want to down play how hard the start of parenthood is, because it seems a crazy time… but you wait until they get older. That’s when it properly kicks off and you need to be on your A game with advise and words of wisdom 24/7!

I can't stand Rupert Lowe.

But on a legal point, unless there's a valid equality act exclusion I don't think he's wrong.

Even if he's approaching it for horrible reasons.

I guess it is set up to address the glass ceiling on black, mixed race players who retire from playing yet find a pathway to the coaching/ managing levels somewhat blocked. Especially when the makeup of squads of black or mixed players has increased, year on year for many years, so it does address an imbalance that will only get greater over time.
It would be open to all as per the law, but it would probably be a waste of time applying if you are a white guy. Though I guess if you impress enough you would at least be on the club's radar.

Can fully appreciate that - think I'm going to enjoy the early years when they can't back chat. I've got nieces and nephews who are nearly into double figures and I'm sure I was, but I never remember being that argumentative at that age!
