I think it highlights how small their fan base is compared to the more typical 'big clubs' though. I can't imagine United or Liverpool not selling out regardless of how many times they've been in that situation. They would probably see the same behaviours from their loyal fans but have enough other fans who would go in their place. City don't have that. Doesn't take away from his point though on an individual leve, its an expensive day out at a time people are feeling the pinch, and while an FA cup semi final at Wembley is an occasion for most, its really not for a club that's achieved what they have over the last 10 years or more.

In all fairness, it's only a short hop on the tube or round the M25 for United fans....

I'd be much happier with City's fan base than the rest of the big 6

The real point is that it was a Semi Final. And so shouldn't be held at Wembley. And it was a Semi Final between a team from Manchester and one from Nottingham, and so it shouldn't have been in London. He highlights both cost and time as factors.

This is a great point. For whatever reason, the Guardiola effect and Citeh's dominance over the last decade hasn't got them anywhere near the growth in fan base that I thought might start encroaching on the United, Liverpool's and Chelsea's of the league. I wonder why that is. I thought maybe it still isn't long enough historically for them but then Chelsea became quite big over a relatively short space of time. Can't argue that they haven't had superstar players either over the years. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Haven't really got a strong view on this but do agree that many other big northern clubs who have experienced Wembley plenty like Liverpool and United would never leave a seat spare, I think it just sums up the Emptihad gags and having been there last year for their game v Villa there were tonnes of empty seats and half the fans were tourists with half and half scarves. The bigger question for me is around the location of these semi finals. I keep seeing this discussion around them needing to be elsewhere in the country. But these matches take a lot of planning so I'm not sure how easy it would be to decide the location based upon the semi-final draw. London is also the most accessible city for the majority - you can get one direct train there from most major football club towns/cities. There's the accommodation available too for fans. I know it can be expensive but I'm not sure it would have been much cheaper for Palace fans to travel to Old Trafford on Saturday. The only thing I partly agree with is that an alternative London venue could be used for the semis to preserve Wembley for the final - such as Emirates, Spurs Stadium or Twickenham. But all of those would mean fewer tickets to fans and I am sure Forest, Palace and Villa fans weren't complaining about going to Wembley on the weekend.

Semis should be at a neutral ground, that works for both clubs. There are plenty available around the country which should be used.

Wembley isn't even in the top 3-4 of Stadiums in the country now.

Really? I can think of the Tottenham Stadium as being a pretty impressive stadium, and quite new, but Wembley is still the biggest by capacity, so I would think it still gets into the top 3 or 4 in the country...

He replied on this, saw it elsewhere. Nandos, Greggs, McD's and bought two 4 pint rounds (one in a pub outside Wembley and one inside). Easily £100.

I take his overall point but you don't need to have 8 pints. That's half of his food and drink amount right there.

Clearly not - it would cost more than £100 for a whole day’s food and drink there - but he would have been paying London prices. As someone who never attends away games,I often genuinely wonder how many of our fans can afford it, especially those who turn it into a family event.

City still sold an 27k tickets and Forest sold 36k. Wembley is the only stadium which could accommodate those numbers plus the hospitality packages which is expected now at semis. Some people think it’s wrong to have semi-finals at Wembley and should be at Villa Park or somewhere. But if Ipswich managed to get to a semi, then st Wembley the allocation would be approximately £36k. At other stadiums it would be much less. A lot of people would miss out on a ticket.

Yes this is my point. If we had to go to Villa Park or even the West Ham stadium for our first semi final in years and 10,000 Town fans missed out on tickets that could have gone if it was Wembley then I suspect we'd soon be hearing the other side of the argument from these people.

I live in London. I don't pay this on food in a week. I don't get all this "London prices", things are only expensive in London if you go to very posh or best basic tourist places.
