Looks possibly an angry driver losing his mind at his car being kicked and smashed, as opposed to terrorism. Not that that makes it any better of course.

Yes but think they were kicking and smashing after he had reversed/driven into people, there’s one video from the top of the road and compared to where the car ended up it’s quite a long way all things considered.

Just seen some footage. Horrendous. It's good for the driver the police got there very quickly or that crowd would have lynched him i think. Mind boggling why somebody would do that.

Yep, I think it's that as well from the video. Looks like there was some sort of confrontation, probably due to the guy driving down the road in the first place, and he's snapped.

So incredibly sad.

It does look like that - at one point the car is surrounded and is being attacked, but its just that last video where a gap appears straight ahead and he veers off course into the crowd instead - psychotic behaviour.

The Times reporting a witness who says he stumbled out of Hooters drunk before it. Might explain why he swerves towards people.

A very strange and sad story!

The far right are now complaining that the attacker being named as white was too fast compared to when it is a person of colour.

Would seem a fair question as to why the level of detail was immediately disclosed in this case, and simply wasn’t in the Southport one. Surely you understand that inconsistency like that is going to do more harm than good?

People need simple, uncomplicated messaging a lot of the time - and our inability to confront that is a massive problem and will see us spiral in a direction plenty of us don’t want.

It was the far right complaining details weren’t released - now they are saying it’s typically hypocritical that anyone would be moaning. Given that they need no excuse to riot, enact violence and incite death, what’s the lesser of two evils?

A few knuckledraggers and racebaiters moaning a bit, or Southport #2?

I can’t say I’m following any of it on social media to be honest.

The police have clearly responded differently in this case, and I think that’s right. The information void in Southport will have lasting effects, including those you mention referring back to it at any opportunity.

It's a sad world, when police are criticised for not immediately releasing details of the suspect's ethnicity and/or religion when these things happen. Oh well, I suppose it has prevented riots this time, what with him being white and British.

I reckon road rage. Think he’s driven down the closed road, the scousers haven’t taken to that fondly and smashed his car up and the lunatic has totally flipped and decided to start mowing everyone he could down. Madness

Latest on BBC says people were rocking and banging on his car before it all kicked off so road rage seems likely.

I get that but, as I say, it opens the door to the next time if their race isn't mentioned those with an agenda will assume they are not white.

As long as people will riot due to speculation, the police can’t win. But I think this approach is their best option.

They'd all laugh at me if they knew what I was trying to do. To create a new strain of super-wine in half-an-hour with a fraction of nature's resources and a FOOL for an assistant. 'Bernard Black, he's mad,' they'd say, 'he's insane, he's dangerous.' Well I'll show them! I'll show them all!

There’s no way it’s vehicle malfunction.

It stops and goes again several times.

I unfortunately saw the BBC clip. It reminded me of a cornered animal trying to escape. I wouldn’t be surprised if we find out someone panicked by being surrounded, possibly someone with mental health issues who couldn’t deal with the situation, rather than a deliberate attempt to harm people.

I could be very wrong of course and we’ve been told not to speculate, which I’m very aware I’ve just done! Of course, it could just be an evil barsteward. We’ll probably find out in time.

What a fecked up world we live in when something so tragic as this happens and the first reaction from the absolute dregs of society is to lick their lips at the prospect it could be a foreigner responsible. Sympathy for those caught up in it is the furthest thing from their minds, sick b@stards.

I agree. Obviously the first thought should be with those impacted but that is not what we’re dealing with in a world of social media etc

the very same thing happened before the Espanyol-Barcelona derby match 2 weeks ago. 13 people injured. Not the same magnitude as the Liverpool situation but same situation that a car ended up in a closed road surrounded by crowd . In the Barcelona one people were banging on the car throwing beer and the driver panicked and tried to accelerate away. Panic can have bad effects, so it is possible the Liverpool one is not purposely malignant. But like you, I could easily be very, very wrong. More on the basis you hope people are not that evil.

I was on my own in my car using a Leeds pub (notorious for drugs) carpark after dark, to turn round in many years ago, was wearing a neck brace at the time. A gang of youths started shouting at me whilst rocking my car from side to side. Extremely frightening. Only way out of it was to accelerate away, which I did slowly as obvs didn't want to cause injury. But it would have been easy to panic & bang down on the gas.

Edit: I should add that it was 10.30pm & the car-park looked deserted when I drove in, only 2-3 cars there & no yoofs in sight, otherwise I wouldn't have turned into it. They seemed to appear out of nowhere.

It could easily be a driver being over the limit and then, as reported by a number of witnesses, ending up with his car in the wrong place and it being attacked. Driver panicks and everything goes wrong.

Too many initial comments on here state it as being obvious that it was a deliberate act. It may have been but on the other it may not have been. Jumping to conclusions a la Southport is plain wrong, whether it’s racist or not.

Likewise, I haven't seen or heard anything about how it initially started (and am avoiding the vids), but did think it could have started as a genuine 'accident' (albeit a drunken one) which then escalated as he tried to get away, found himself swarmed by crowds trying to prevent a hit-and-run, only to double down in a panic trying to get away.

All pure speculation of course, which is always foolish.

And on the litter point - on the last day of the season I saw the aftermath around Civic Drive / Curve bar area, it was knee deep in cans and empty cases. Even if every individual there had wanted to tidy up, there wouldn't be enough bins to cope. Short of local establishments providing bags and asking everyone to chip in, wasn't much to be done other than leaving it for the council.

Given a highly charged situation like last night, if the police had released no details, the rumour machine would have started and it could have led to a full scale anti Islamic riot so the police were in a difficult situation. But, as you say, if a similar incident occurs again and the police refuse to release any details, some of the public are now more likely to draw their own, possibly incorrect, conculsions.

Yep agree. Pretty obvious that an immediate release of details was a priority, and lessons have been learned from other recent incidents.
