Sell ons and buy-backs are absolutely normal, but I don’t know where this myth that you can’t sign players without them has come from. (We’re not obliged to buy from City, Villa etc and there’s plenty of players abroad).

We’ve just sold Delap for a maximum of £5M profit, when in reality, he’s a £50M+ player. You’re absolutely naive if you think Ashton isn’t absolutely kicking himself, however positively you want to spin it.

Of course we can buy elsewhere but it does not take a genius to realise the best domestic talent sits in the academies of the elite english clubs.

The English academy football landscape has significantly changed since the EPPP was introduced in 2012. Larger clubs, with their greater resources and infrastructure, have been able to leverage EPPP rules to attract promising young players from smaller academies, often for relatively low fees.

This has meant a concentration of the countries talent at the biggest academies which inevitably sit at the top of the PL. Unsurprisingly, a number of clubs are then after those youngsters and the result of that is that the big clubs set their price and protect themselves.

Ashton wont be kicking himself. He's made the club 10M in one year. And now he needs to do it again and again regardless of the control another club might have.

Where does the maximum £5 million profit come from? We're going to sell him for £30 million, we bought him for £15 million plus any add-ons that have been triggered (up to a maximum additional £5 million) and City will receive 20% of the profit. So, by my back of a fag packet calculations, we stand to make a profit of between £8-12 million.

Whilst him and Guiu are highly regarded I’d be a bit nervous that we’d be gambling a lot on 2 unproven strikers if they were the two we brought in.

Two young strikers with very good pedigree.

Plus Hirst.

Plus Szmodics behind.

Plus Hutchinson, Clarke and Burns.

And Chaplin, who made others tick up front in our last Championship campaign.

All of whom have demonstrated that they are very good at the top end of the Championship, and have scored goals in that division.

Town fans feel that the jury is out on Philogene at the moment, but he too has done very well in the Championship before.

We really wouldn't be gambling a lot on two unproven strikers, when the majority of those players, if not all of them, will be with us next season.

£5M max profit? Where did you get that from.

Profit is likely to be circa £12M. Maybe slightly lower if any add-ons were triggered, but anything substantial seems unlikely in a single, relegation season.

And anyone thinking Delap would have definitely gone for £50M+ now is naive. He’ll be worth that if he carries on developing, but how many players sold for over £50M this season? Very few, and typically more developed and proven. Without the clause we may have pushed an extra few million, but hard to see it going much beyond £35M at this point in his career.

Funny how fans always overvalue their own players.

I remain incredulous at the number of people who think that the profit is more important than the football, and would cut off their nose to spite their face (as my old Grandma would say) at the thought of even a totally unrealistic fantasy of contractual realities being not what they are, and some other club 'getting some of our money what we should have got'. Madness.

Dug into his goal record this morning and he's got a decent record.

U18 Premier League - 30 goals in 47 games
Premier League 2 - 26 goals in 39 games
FA Youth Cup - 10 goals in 9 games

In the 13 games he played for City U21s this season he's only blanked twice, scoring 16 goals with 4 assists. The team only scored 33 goals in the games he played so he was responsible for over 60% of their goals whilst he was on the pitch.

Tho they might be two of many strands in our search for a striker. Either/or, rather than both.

Especially if Guiu apparently isn't that keen on the move.

Even if profit is the bean blower for people…

Getting promotion in the next 12 months will result in far more income for the club than the entirety of last season’s transfer spend.

Player trading compared to premier league status is a drop in the ocean.

Purchased for £15M + £5M if getting promoted = £20M.

Sold for £30M, with Man City getting 30% of the profit, gives Town £7M profit.

I would take an educated guess that he would have been earning circa £40k a week, which equates to around £2M annually.

Therefore, Towns profit is £5M.

Without going full-on hippy, it’s the sate we’ve all been conditioned to. You know as well as anyone we’re prepared to place profit above the condition of the planet. Placing it above the football seems small beer by comparison.

I sometimes despair with our fans ...

Town promoted from Championship - May 4th 2024

Liam Delap signs for new season as a Premier League player - July 13th 2024

Town supposedly pay City 5M in add ons two months later for already being promoted ...

Read what you're actually writing.

You have any sources for those claims as they don't seem to match anything Phil has said with regards to top-ups or sell-on clauses.

Not sure you can add wages into the calculation just to try and make a point. We would have been paying someone else if it wasn't Delap so that money would still have gone out.

Unless you can source any of those figures reliably it just looks like you're trying to be negative.

SB

Edit: This is actually just nonsense, we were already promoted when we bought Delap so why would we pay a 5M promotion bonus.

Wouldn't want both - agree with that.

Would prefer Mubama on a permanent than Guiu on a loan, based on the limited time I have seen either of them.

Would prefer a more experienced proven option in there as well - an Emil Riis on a free for example.

Doubt he is - deal doesn't get done without the clause so we make £0 profit.

I'm not sure if as many clubs would have been in if the price had been £50m. He's got great promise and physical attributes, but he's still incredibly raw and has a lot of areas to improve on in order to become an elite striker.

Where to start with this?

£5m on getting promoted? We were in the Prem when we signed him. The add ons will relate to various things, some will have been triggered but I very much doubt all of them will be.

And since when do you guess at and deduct a players wages when considering whether you've profited from a transfer deal?

And where are you getting 30% from? Phil and most other sources have consistently had it as 20%.

We'll be making somewhere around £10m I expect, which is pretty decent after one season when we've ended up going down.

Well, plenty of mistakes in there :-)

Purchased for £15M + £5M if getting promoted = £20M.

Eh? We got relegated, not promoted. Delap was purchased after we were already promoted. The Add-ons were likely to be appearance, call-up and not being relegated related. None may have been triggered, or maybe a very small one for appearances - say £1M. Could easily be zero in this first, unsuccessful season.

..with Man City getting 30% of the profit..

It has been widely reported for nearly a year that it was 20%, only one recent report says 30%. Likely that the most recent is a typo maybe?

..he would have been earning circa £40k a week..

Who would ever include wages in the profit calculation. If we didn't have Delap, we'd have another striker being paid similarly. Transfer profits of exactly that - what you made or loss from the transaction.

Apologies, I forgot we were allowed a slightly negative opinion. I’m not going to trawl through and provide links, a quick google shows we paid £20M.

I can’t account for wages because you said so? Even without accounting for that, we’ve made £7M profit on a player that is probably worth £50M+.

It’s ok to disagree with me, that’s not a problem.

it is useful to see benchmarks in the form of historic prices, but I would query whether any of those players would command those fees after the season they have each just had.

I agree that Delap is arguably better than those players, and should command a higher fee in an open market, I just dont think Man Utd are going to be able to sell Hojlund for more than 30m at the moment!
