Understand why this is happened but this is one hell of a high wire act from us now ahead of a season that will be relentless.

Gutted doesn't even begin to cover it.

What a player, what a captain. The very very best.

Poll: We’ve got super KM, he knows exactly what we need. Woolfie at the back…

We must be confident of signing another high-level senior midfielder to replace him then. I can't see we'd be happy to let him move without knowing we're covered.

I think that goes without saying if you're happy to let your long-time captain move on.

This feels like a move that could drag us right into the mix with the other sides. These new players might be better players, but the leadership and experience of knowing the league will be hugely missed.

I agree. Half the Champ can sign a nice £8m midfielder or two. We have lost a lot of what dragged us over the line last time – Morsy, Luongo, Axel, Burgess, maybe Burns depending on the condition he eventually returns in. There is no evidence yet that the rest of our squad is able to do that. We will be ok eventually but I sense we are in for a rocky start.

Gutted to lose Sam, we will miss his leadership on and off the pitch - who will be captain now from the current squad - O'Shea?

This.

Cannot for the life of me understand it unless Sam came to the club and pushed very hard for it.

Whoever comes in for him I think it's a must they have English football experience. Asking a lot for overseas players to come in and hit the ground running.

This really feels a bit like the summer of 01/02 again with Wright and Scowie leaving.

It says in Watson's story ... they couldn't come to an agreement on a new contract.

Feels nothing like it in my opinion. We have replaced a 34 year old legend with an upgrade.

Love the man, took this club by the scruff of the neck and gave us the good times back,
Good luck and thank you Sam,

I wonder if we'll look at Travis again? Clearly not at Morsy's level, but has the nous and experience in the Championship and would come cheap given no new contract on the horizon at Blackburn.

Devastating on an emotional level, but I think we have leadership and experience in abundance still (O'Shea, Chaplin, Hirst etc.) plus of course Himself, KMc.

I can also imagine the charge of energy the likes of Matusiwa is going to bring into a very strong Championship squad hitting the ground running.

I totally agree but we move on. Sam has been and will always be a legend in my eyes

The most disappointing thing for me is that the guy will not get the send off he deserves

Hopefully one day we get the opportunity to show our gratitude and appreciation !!!

Indeed, Morsy was a good captain but he’s clearly on the decline. I imagine he’d have played a solid rotational role this season, but I also can’t see Sam settling for that- careers winding down, he can take the cash and play regularly at a lesser level- makes sense for him I guess.

People are getting hysterical.

Just put in a request for compassionate leave at work to comes to terms with this. Gutted.

At least he’s not off to Derby!

What a leader, what a player.

A really, really risky move - I was already very worried about our CM recruitment and how much we needed to do, and it just got harder.

We still need 2 absolute A grade players in there - not going to be easy to get done.

Whatever Morsy's thoughts, I would have had him play out his contract, it's only another year

Not being able to give him the proper send off he deserves is the bit that I think is hardest.

The bloke is single handedly the most important player we’ve had in an Ipswich shirt in my lifetime. To get us to the premier league from league 1 will forever be a miracle.

A special player/man

Sad to lose him but understand the reasons

Perhaps he could make a guest appearance in a pre-season friendly

Deserves a proper send off

I'm sad to lose his experience and leadership, however I think the club have made the right decision long-term given our needs for a younger midfield . He's about to turn 34 so a new contact on healthy wages would leave us extremely exposed. Likewise I think Sam deserves one last pay day so overall probably the right decision for all parties.

We're obviously confident of signing at least two more quality midfielders.

Two out of Ruiz, Hackney, Morton or Cajuste will do.
