Charlton Friendly match thoughts - Omari, Barbrook, Young, Muric 23:01 - Jul 29 with 3792 viewsunstableblue

Some quick fire thoughts from our penultimate pre-season friendly in Colchester’s northern gateway, here we go:

1) good turn out from blue army mostly filled three stands, not as large a contingent as a few years back, and not as vocal, but impressive numbers - that caused a 15min delay due to A12 exit fun
2) Col United pitch looking in pretty good nick, and a vast improvement on last season, bodes well for our woman’s and U21 sides
3) a minute applause following the tragic loss of a Charlton schoolboy player
4) interestingly McKenna chose his second sting starting 11 for what was effectively our home friendly, I think Charlton may have done the same
5) led to a bit of a disjointed town display which lacked some bite in the final third
6) barbrook and Humphreys is a young pairing, but they did OK, and barbrook one of the highlights of the game - tidy player, with some physicality and pace, perhaps he can make it
7) kipre played alongside Wolfie… and our new signing was another stand out - he’s a beast but also cultured… he’s going to give some real competition to greaves
8) Clarke was on the left and had moments but was a little anonymous… but grew on second half and showed his quality with an excellent goal
9) Al Hamadi was a bit of a comic character, some errors and barnstorming play, but a clinical finish for the goal, despite looking offside
10) Chaplin got around and some moments, but don’t think it was a performance that demanded he starts as the 10
11) Ogbene had some nice runs and moments, didn’t carve out a great deal of brilliant chances
12) I thought Young really improved us when he came on - he’s quality on the ball and reading the game, could be a key addition
13) OMARI! Wowsers is he going to stay?! Hirst, Philogene/Clarke, Szmodics, Hutchinson - it almost doesn’t seem fair!!
14) Philogene not as good when he came on as a sub than his performance in Scotland… but still oozed some class

Mainly the b team, not a great display, but in individual performances and a couple of moves a lot to look forward to

Need another striker of pedigree - BIG TIME.. and sounding like the second midfielder is close.

Don’t think you can have Omari, Philogene, Clarke, Ogbene and Broadhead -
Imagine Nathan could be going.

PS - one mild clanger from Muric, then a great save, sums him up a little. I though it was the Charlton fans booing him as he approached the away end… some fake news about perhaps

I hope it was Charlton fans booing him. Although I don't know why they would single him out.

Some pre-season banter for a new keeper coming on and heading towards them?!

Just seemed to come from that direction. Would have had to be from the town fans in the main stand that end of it was indeed blues booing our own… which is very sad indeed

"13) OMARI! Wowsers is he going to stay?! Hirst, Philogene/Clarke, Szmodics, Hutchinson - it almost doesn’t seem fair!!"

I think if Omari stays then we might see Clarke - Omari - Philogene.

Guess we will see. I don't think we can really have Clarke and Philogene competing for a place.

Thought there was a huge step up in quality on the right hand side when Young and Hutchinson came on. I'm desperate for Ogbene to succeed, but I still haven't seen him go past anyone since we signed him.

Bang on

First off the way Omari and Young started linking after what a few days training together, was very very promising

Ogbene did have moments, but he’s not terrifying defenders as Omari and Clarke did at times

I’d suggest Charlton had brought some better players on at that point as well

Young really does a look an upgrade on Johnson, who did OK, but I’m still not convinced. Great back up player and sub though due to his energy

I’m firmly in the ‘Szmodics must start at 10” camp

He just brings some real nouse, a few dark arts, but crucially puts another real finisher in the team

I also think sammie needs to start to get the best from him

Fair enough.

That would mean one of Clarke, Hutch or Philogene on the bench and I don't think we will keep a young talent of that value on the bench.

I think Hutch might play 10 for a season if he stays in preparation for the role higher up the leagues.

I could be totally wrong though.

I hear ya

Not starting Clarke in the Championship is criminal but I fear that’s where we’re heading

BUT it’s a long campaign, Broadhead is seemingly going so you need a quality sub/back-up… at a level higher than Ogbene/Chaplin.

Johnson is a superb athlete, with a great touch and technique, but I'm not convinced he has a lot of football intelligence. Young is a very, very clever player.

No chance all four of them will stay fit for 46 games, so injuries will make picking 3 from those 4 easier at times. Then we can probably get away with a little bit of rotation before any of them get too upset (saturday-tuesday etc). Then, if we go up, no-one's complaining about game time if they're premier league players again.

Fingers crossed.

I was East Stand towards the South Stand end, loud and clear BOO’s from there and then sarcastic cheers whenever he kicked the ball up until his save.

We used subs pretty early in the championship if memory serves? Each one of them will have a chance to stake their starting place once they get on the pitch but I get what you’re saying almost an embarrassment of riches at this level and hard to keep everyone happy.

What was the 'mild clanger' from Muric.

Thought he looked far more comfortable then Walton

Might be wrong but if we are clicking and stay relatively injury free I’m not sure how much of a say he will have at ITFC anymore. Just seems like we are thinking a level ahead now and for all his amazing press and great cut backs, he’s not like he’s going to play in the PL again.

Of course he might have a part to play second half of this season though.

r.e. 2. The pitch isn’t actually finished yet. It’s due to be ‘stitched together’ some time next week, after the first league game.

With the number of substitutions allowed so high these days, and with proper depth of quality relative to the league we're in, you'd hope that there could be a policy of enough rotation (between games and early second half) to keep a full set of players (two for each position in the front four at least) happy.

I guess there's still big kudos associated with be in the nominal 'best XI' but if the team is doing well in the league and the balance of the squad is good such that subs/rotations don't affect results much, hopefully they can see that what's good for the club is also good for them.

Kipre is certainly a unit and wouldn’t look out of place on a rugby pitch, but moves quicker and has more ability on the ball than I was expecting. He looks like a good addition. I’d be surprised if theres many championship strikers who’ll bully him.

Young added some quality when he came on he may be 40 but I think could prove to be a valuable signing.

Was bit disjointed with all the changes and certainly not the level of opponents we had last season but we have some foreward line just need another striker to support Hirst.

Sadly inclined to agree, on his day though one of my favourite players but fear age, injury and rise up the leagues has caught up with him. That said we've had the best years from him a bit like Morsy.

We may rotate them. Philogene is coming back from a long term injury so not having to play Saturday-Tuesday-Saturday may benefit him. Plus, as you say, he can also play on the right to give Hutch a break (assuming we keep hold of him) too.
