Were we this arrogant when we got into the Championship? 18:45 - Aug 4 with 3191 viewsKievthegreat

So I was seeing what they were saying on the Birmingham forum about Akpom and this one caught my eye:

"Win-win for us. If he goes to Ipswich, then they're getting a player whose commitment to their cause is such that he was happy to go to perhaps 2 other teams until he gets swayed by a team with 1 fluke season in 20 that couldn't give a toss until they found some spare change to throw at him, and would be a deleterious influence on the squad. If he comes to us, he wants The Project."

Reason I find it amusing is that Birmingham are the same project as us, but 2 years earlier. Our "Fluke season" is basically their plan going forward. Now I get that they've splashed the cash in league 1 more than we did, but did anyone here really think that players should pick us over Leicester, Leeds and Southampton when we got to the Championship?

I remember being confident about us being a dark horse play-off team when we got back to the Champ and people pillorying one of the football podcast-y people who put us finishing 3rd (IIRC) and giving them a lot of stick because he was a town fan and obviously biased.

Not really a big deal, but just thought it interesting how the landscape has changed for the teams too big for League 1 when they get back into the Championship.

Think it's just a bellend football fan using bellend logic to make himself feel better about his tinpot football club getting merced by the mighty ITFC.

Football supporters are utterly delusional at times.

Saw some Newcastle fans who were hell bent on Isak staying because there’s no club that could match their ‘project’. God forbid he just wants to win major honours in the prime of his career and earn more.

Can't blame him for thinking we've got a better chance of promotion, sorry Birmingham fans

They have the shouty Americans and we have the quieter ones, it's easy to see how the former might infect a fanbase. Let's see who is happiest in May.

The worst phrase in Football is 'project'.

The Birmingham/ Wrexham project is no different to the other 22 teams in the Championship. Get back to the Premier League and do it in the fastest possible time.

Everything else is just marketing fluff.

And to answer your question, no we were not that arrogant but equally we did not have the money they have. We spent 5M total in 23/24.

Oh football fans are the worst! I should know I am one.

One thing I'll say about Birmingham is that they've recognised the only way to break into the upper echelons and not hit a ceiling is by building a stadium big enough to lift that ceiling. Brentford will always be limited. Brighton too. Birmingham, if they can monetise like Tottenham, could do something. Birmingham's demographics mean they could become a big club if they can overtake Villa (no easy feat).

HOWEVER, that's probably a decade away. The limit they have in the medium term is similar to ours in that they can hope to emulate a Brighton or Brentford for stability or a Forest for having a wonder season. Plus as previously said, they are 2 years behind.

And spent more than us in League 1 too. They've definitely gone for it and I like their business too. However even with the best will in the world, a parachute club of any kind will still have greater resources.

A "fluke season" is scraping 6th with 67 points, then beating a top 6 team for the first time in the season in a Play Off Semi, and winning the Final on penalties.

90+ points isn't a fluke season.

And 90+ points, and Automatic Promotion, two years running is consistency. The complete opposite of a fluke.

The most important aspect he’s missing of course is that Akpom moving to Birmingham would of course mean akpom has to move to Birmingham. Which is surely a huge factor in choosing anyone but Birmingham.

There’s been a LOT of noise from Brum; their club admin was taking a jab at Forest at the weekend, and they were parking buses outside Villa Park saying the “city is blue”. Add in the money/ Tom Brady factor and they’re going to have a lot of attention this season. No idea if their squad is legit but their fans will be rabid and loud for a few weeks at least. Hope they fall flat on their asses, obviously.

Am quite happy to have as much attention of Brum and Wrexham as possible.

Most Brum and Villa players live in or near the village of Little Aston. Nestled in the foothills of the Barr Beacons, and with Sutton Park on the doorstep. Lots of green space. It's a beautiful part of the world. And next to no tourists.

More classics

We can dress this up how we like, but we are missing out on players to rivals like QPR and Ipswich. Nothing clubs.

Nah, down to a straight choice us or ipswich. Only one winner. We are on the up with momentum strengthend our side a club going forwards. Ipswich are on the way down. They've lost it. The place is a dump. If we match the wage offer from Ipswich he signs for us.

If we sign him, he will be a good third choice striker for us. If he doesn’t, thats ok, if he is the starting striker for Boro or Ipswich, I think that shows how much further ahead we are than them.

Admittedly there are a lot of balanced comments but I think some of their fans are as annoying and arrogant as Leeds, and that takes some doing.

Leeds had a slightly greater right to that in fairness, they are going on like they are Premier League heavyweight
