Can anyone explain why Chaplin started on Saturday ? 17:11 - Sep 1 with 3385 views | CopfordBlue | If he wasn’t in the squad, wasn’t close to a starting place then it would be easier to understand the decision today. Yes we’ve got new signings who could potentially play that role but equally we had Szmodics sitting on the bench.

Can anyone explain why Chaplin started on Saturday ? on 17:14 - Sep 1 with 2493 views | GlasgowBlue | I've given my view. We thought we could offload Johnson or Harry Clarke by today. As we didn't and we were one over our limit, Chappers was sacrificed. The squad is imbalanced imo.

Last 'meh' would be more accurate. And I don't for one minute blame Chappers.

Don't see many worlds in which someone comes in for Johnson, but yeah i would have thought Clarke would have been off

Precisely. For Johnson, PL teams won't want him, not even the newly promoted ones. Championship clubs can't afford him. So we are stuck. It beggars belief that this is Johnson's first season playing outside the Prem. So far he looks like some lower league signing rather than a Prem stalwart. | | | | Login to get fewer ads
Can anyone explain why Chaplin started on Saturday ? on 17:24 - Sep 1 with 2221 views | Lanky | Exactly! SURELY we wouldn't start him as a last hurrah in an important league game- so you can only be left with the presumption he was seen as a better fit than Szmodics (unless Szmodics is not fit??) If Akpom, with more training under his belt, is seen as the first choice 10, it still doesn't explain why we'd actively decide to let go of our second best bet there. It just doesn't make sense really.

Second best 10 in your opinion. Second best 10 in KMs opinion is the one that won the golden boot from that position.

You can't be serious? You think in a cut throat business McKenna is treating a league game like a friendly? [Post edited 1 Sep 17:33]

I suspect because he doesn’t see him as our second best option there.

Players are probably a lot less sentimental about it all than we are, I imagine they all knew/know the score. Like to think none of them have genuinely left on bad terms, especially Chappers.

Can anyone explain why Chaplin started on Saturday ? on 17:30 - Sep 1 with 2063 views | waveneyblue | You almost answered your own question.... Add Nunez and the Norwegian lad to the squad - Chaplin probably wouldn't have been on the bench. Its sad, I love Chappers and wish him the very very best - but we've moved on. Its better to have loved and lost, then to have never loved at all.....

In what way? A last chance to prove himself? Ridiculous if that was the reason given he’s been here longer than McKenna and anyway he did ok in a very average team performance on Saturday . A chance to say goodbye? In which case why not as a late sub and why no announcement beforehand ? As others have pointed out, football is now a business with no place for sentimentality. He played on Saturday because McKenna thought he was our best option in that position. Two days later, he’s gone. Time to take the blinkers off, there is no master plan to this. He’s still the right manager for us but he needs to bring some continuity to the team pretty quickly or the season will pass us by.

And clearly on Saturday so did McKenna so why move Chaplin on and keep SS?

Can anyone explain why Chaplin started on Saturday ? on 17:33 - Sep 1 with 1972 views | BlueOsterClub | I think if a player is in your starting 11 his value is higher when selling or negating a loan fee. Lots of football fans seem to forget football is a business as well. However if Chaplin had of had a brilliant game , scored or assisted then perhaps we would not have let him go. But also a nice touch to give him a game. I know someone in the comments has said McKenna would not play a weakened side but I don't think Chappers would be much behind Szcmodics

Can anyone explain why Chaplin started on Saturday ? on 17:35 - Sep 1 with 1918 views | petieboy2011 | I wonder if Chaplin started so that when he was subbed off he would gesture as though he was leaving so we could give him a massive round of applause, but because of the way the game was going, he ended up sprinting off when subbed so didnt get his "moment". If not like you and others have said, its quite strange.

We haven't won a game all season. I doubt very much he was selected for sentimental reasons. If he was then that is gross negligence by McKenna. It's hardly the same as giving Edmundson the last 5 minutes away at City when we were 4-1 down. [Post edited 1 Sep 17:37]

For a couple of minutes at the end of a game that was already lost. There’s no way he started him in an important game for sentimental reasons.
