Hey Jude pre match.. on 08:37 - Sep 3 with 764 views
also I cant say I heard the Derby fans singing hey jude, maybe you sit nearer them, but it actually sounded like the whole ground was singing it, because its that kind of song, anyone knows the words to it
as opposed to a handful of people who will sing EEJB, or any other dirge from the past people suggest. because sorry theyre not crowd atmosphere songs, its like Everton playing Z cars, they only do it now because people would moan if they stopped, but it barely has any appeal to people who were born 50 years ago. how is it supposed to appeal to the current generation of fans let alone the next.
and if EEJB was such a popular song, it would be sung on the terraces all the time, and its not is it ? so why should we play it pre match.
as an example I went to see Boston Red Sox last year theyve a tradition of playing Sweet Caroline during the 8th inning stretch, so what according to your rules everyone plays Sweet Caroline dont they, so they shouldnt because everyone does it, its tired, its cliche, and yet everyone knows the words and they had 36,000 odd fans singing along to it and it created a great atmosphere.
fwiw Id prefer we went back to Two Steps from Hell or Ninja tracks pre match, but Im liking the early naughties flavour Chemical Bros segueway into Fat Boy Slim.
I also think the PA does a good job too. but its easy to criticise.
I do feel for the PA bloke, it is a tough job and since Rob Chandler we have struggled to get it right. That being said the current guy is crazy, Its like im at a pantomime.
I've never understood why they haven't asked Ed to create something for pre-match.
You obviously don't want anything forced but I think 'North London Forever' proves that you don't need to reinvent the wheel in anyway. Just a punchy meaningful chorus that everyone can belt out.

I think we do pretty well with hey jude, man utd sing country road ? Notts forrest mull of kintyre???? I thought years ago we would choose thin lizzy the boys are back in town , but we never have. You definitely can't have Edward Ebenezer, that would be daft.

I think the debate shows we lack an identity for want of a better word.
Liverpool have YNWA, Stoke Delilah, Brum Keep Right onto To The End of The Road, Everton it’s a Grand Old Team To Play For etc.
Been going since 1878, Division One Winners, FA Cup Winners, UEFA Cup Winners but no readily identifiable club song.
If my memory is not misbehaving I recall on Ray Crawford’s retirement, his last game at Portman Road he asked that the tons fans should sing “keep right on to the end of the road” If it was good enough for Ray Crawford it should be good enough for every town supporter. Birmingham can do one.

The problem with Edward Ebeneezer Jeremiah Brown is that it's not repetitive enough, with simple lyrics, and the tempo (BPM) is too fast for a successful anthem. There's a lot been written about this, and what makes a successful Anthem.
There's a reason YNWA, IFBB, Jerusalem, etc work well to get a stadium fully engaged.
If you try to force something on people that breaks the rules for an anthem that works for crowd participation, it won't stick.

Rob Chandler was clearly very good at it but I feel like people have forgotten that his style was very similar to the current bloke, albeit this guy dials up the over-excitement a bit. Probably also given some direction from the club on what they want him to do rather than give him completely free rein.
Chandler would 100% do the 'Blue Army' thing for example which does get a big response and gets the crowd going but despite that outcome (what everyone claims to want from pre-match atmosphere) it still gets derided as 'cringe' or whatever. He/the club will never win because some people will always moan about something.
Just because I don't care doesn't mean I don't understand.
Never liked Hey Jude (might be down to a very drunk mate of mine singing it repeatedly at the top of his voice while I had a migraine). Always thought it very down-beat, too, tho I appreciate the "naa naa na nananana" bit is easy for a crowd to sing.
Would prefer EEJB. But not Story Of The Blues.
Heck, if people want scat singing, we could do "I'm blue dabadee dabadoo".
Ah, fair enough. That's a different page to the one linked to earlier in the thread.
If forced to choose an actual song from the list, I would go for This Girl, as presumably Kylie Auldist (the female singer on the song) would get at least some royalties.

Derby fans belted it out, every single one of them. Seems like such an insignificant thing but it is baffling that we have persisted with it.
Surely there is some way we can get it through to the club. I saw so many tweets in the off season asking for it to be ditched as well.
The whole pre match stuff is terrible IMO. The flames, the PA who is like a child that has consumed too many sweets and then Hey Jude.
Going back to THAT night at Barnsley, they played Hey Jude just before kick-off and our fans were belting it out, a truly memorable moment - of quite a few from that night.
A mate was in the home end (as a Barnsley fan rather than undercover) and told me subsequently he turned to his Dad next to him and said "we're going to get battered here" as we were singing it. This was obviously before the now famous "Blue Army" chant that will live long in the memory for all of us lucky enough to be there.
And seeing as I mentioned that game.... let's have a little joy on this wet Wednesday morning.

See also Sunderland away. Turned up, thinking it's going to be a tough place to go first game of the season, big home atmosphere etc, and then they play Hey Jude and our whole away end are in full voice. Won there as well!
