Truly unbearable.

Parking the question of who is right or wrong, it is a perfect microcosm of the way that we have all been divided into tribes by the people with hands on the levers of power in recent years. Brexit is the most obvious example here, but there are loads more, and it's very evidently a deliberate ploy to divide populations into things they disagree about rather than unite on the things they agree on. The USA over the last decade is obviously another good example.

I try my hardest not to get sucked in, but it's becoming increasingly hard to just ignore stuff that I find almost upsetting at times.

Think im going to go football only on here for a bit. Which is a shame, as I do value seeing different views to challenge my world view.

Appreciate that this is a bit of a look at me post, but wanted to be able to vent a bit.

Maybe - and work with me on this cos I've literally only just come up with it and haven't thought it through at all - a lesson could be learned from another, now defunct, forum I used to be in for English Civil War re-enactors, who can get into a slanging match over wool colours at the drop of a Monmouth Cap.

There was a subsection called, not without reason, The Bear Pit. You posted there in the full knowledge that the level of debate was likely to be much more vitriolic and spiky. Sounds insane, I know. But some people actually enjoyed it, occasionally mods would move threads there when they got overheated and, in general, the rest of the forum was a happier place for it, including more posts from members who had shied away because of the way some people would start a fight in an empty room.

As I say, I haven't thought it through but it did, anecdotally at least, work.

...Phil and young Gavin would be a bit concerned about letting any area be a "free for all"!

Somebody threatened them with legal action only this week because he was being called a racist!

I genuinely think that in the medium term having a separate politics tab would ease the burden on the moderators considerably.

....the intention was obviously originally to separate "football" from the rest, so there's no real reason (other than workload) to not do it with politics, particularly for Phil's sake.

If there was a separate tab for politics then people would have no excuse or reason to moan about it.

Also if you are using "thread mode" then you can't really avoid the threads at all.

And finally, as others have said earlier it's difficult and human nature to some degree to not read all the tosh that gets posted.

A separate section for politics is obviously a solution that should be accepted by all, other than those that enjoy the arguments and love the attention.

The question should really be "why wouldn't you have a separate politics section?"

I always think those that moan about it when they've clicked on it just do it for attention, and don't realise how stupid it looks.

If someone posted everyhting in Football I'd get it, but either read it and get involved/ignore it seems to be beyond them.

Anyone using thread mode gets what they deserve anyway. It's the Battenburg/EDL/Pablo of modes.

I’m fully aware of his views, he’s a typical traditional American Christian conservative who I watched alot of prior to his death – I didn’t say I hold the same views as him, I just said I’m to the right of centre and some of my views align with his on certain topics, so when he’s being called a fascist/racist/bigot etc; upon his death for holding certain views I agree with along with being the same age and same position in life as I am, it’s a bit of a worry.

That’s exactly the sort of language that needs to stop because to me & you, we can differentiate between right and wrong and, but all it takes is one nutcase to feel ‘justified’ for it to turn into a murder.

Don't want to derail this meta thread but would love you to elaborate on this elsewhere. I think the use of those words in relation to Kirk was mostly accurate and don't see how such language can be blamed for his death.

Many years ago in the fanzine, when singing sections were first mooted, a friend of mine posited the introduction of a fighting section for those who wished to partake in football hooliganism. Not sure this isn't dissimilar.

When we introduced the two tabs, at the request of those who were only interested in football, there was opposition as a lot of posters felt the Forum would lose its 'soul' if it was split into sections. As it was, we managed to have our Battenburg and eat it by having the split as we do where you can opt one way or the other or view both. Not sure we'd really want any more specific sections. Think the Forum goes through phases and obviously there are a couple of big news stories which are prominent at the moment, are interlinked and on which posters evidently hold differing views.

my question in return is "how do you define politics?"

pretty much encompasses everything, especially for the culture warriors. i'd vote for a "troll" section, where people are just posting to get a reaction can chat amongst themselves

On your second point, the forum has been going through this "phase" for a long time now!

I'll stick to my original idea, it would save you personally a lot of time and hassle.

Unfortunately we can't currently have our Battenburg (sic) without having our politics as well.

My question is - where do people find the time to be continually posting in such threads?

I’m retired, and am way too busy to even read, never mind post, on most of them! As such, I have to be selective about what threads I click on, which kinda solves the ‘problem’!

I'm on quite a few social media places, I have very varied interests. Only this one has the sheer amount of political posts & the nastiness they bring. Not sure how it has been allowed here? If it has to continue, just put every political post in a Politics tab & let them all scratch each others eyes out, while everyone else carries on supporting a football club.

Really? I find this place a much more pleasant environment for political debates than Twitter or Facebook, where racism is openly allowed. Here you see people posting nonsense and bigotry get called out, dissected and rebutted, which is what I suspect makes political discussions on here deeply uncomfortable for some posters, as they aren't used to being challenged.

Yeah, I am sure everyone else would love it if people were cluttering the board with tones of Telegraph and Mail articles every day about the same stuff.

To steal a phrase, it's like a flood the zone tactic at times! Some posters and the threads they've started over the last few years are just constant about the same topics. Everyone knows where to find those media outlets if they want it, right?

It's all over the news every hour and most on here clearly consume it daily anyway! Everyone is free to post or discuss whatever they want of course but I also free to say it's a bit tiresome if that's all people are here for, especially as it's all from the same sources to just confirm a viewpoint, not real any productive discussion.

At least balance it with some footy, those arguments are much more toned down, fun and less insulting, actually hang on...

Yes and I do, when I can find it. I also contribute to the other stuff as well at times but obviously it's pretty pointless as it's the same all day every day. Fair play though, if that's how people want to spend their entire week.

Yep, record number of ‘ignores’ handed out by me in last couple of weeks- makes me think about when I used to operate a ‘no blocking’ policy and would just constantly bicker with turnips on here- apologies to anyone who was present ten years or so ago who told me I should block people, I should have listened. It’s much nicer on here without wading through the guff.

That thread at times was borderline disgusting - no one overtly said they were glad but blimey, you read the comments about a barely cold father & husband and you'd think he was Hitler or Stalin!

The fact that some on here won't like is that quite alot of people resonate with what he said/believed, so to just shout anybody down as a fascist because they're to the right or hold similar views is exactly why these things happen and why murderers/attackers feel justified in doing so.

Sorry but I think that’s patently untrue.

One or two posters were slightly revelling in it. The rest were pointing out the hypocrisy of how much media presence he was getting compared to other murders/school shootings which occurred at the same time.

Nearly everyone unanimously said that it was awful he died.

Definitely agree we don't want to go down the route of further sub-sections or filters. It's best how it is.

We just need to be better at self-filtering. If you can see a thread is likely to get aggy, and you prefer to avoid it, don't click it. Simples.

Bingo. It wasn’t even within 12 hours and people were on their calling him a c**t and at times suggesting worse.

The board has been going the way for a while but essentially it’s centered around 15 very active rather angry opinionated posters that have no interest in even talking about football. It’s just reposting article after article so a bunch strangers can help their insecurities and confirmation bias. It’s not even to encourage debate because it’s not like you’re charging anyone’s mind. It’s more to actually “out” someone that doesn’t see the world the same way. Surely there must be a sub reddit for all that.

Doesn’t even really feel like an ITFC board anymore.

Phil needs to do more than just have a General/Football section in my opinion. Some people enjoy sport as an escapism from all the crap in the world, especially when trying to follow their team from afar.

I know TWTD has always been a board that discusses all kinds of issues but it’s too far the other way now. Surely others users might feel the same whatever their politics.
