McAteer 22:19 - Sep 30 with 2223 viewsTresBonne

In no way writing him off but he is beginning to echo what Leicester fans told us when he signed.

Struggling to see what he offers on the right at the minute - he works hard, but seems tepid to take on the man and get a cross in. I can’t really remember him doing anything of note in his first five games. Frustrating watch at times.

Hopefully can click soon and nab a goal to kick start him as McKenna is clearly liking him.

I keep telling myself to forget the fee we paid for him. Just going with it being mis-reported or a typo.

I know someone who works for the club reckons a lot of that £12 million is add ons and isn't near what we paid upfront

Alcohol is the answer but I can't remember the question!

There was one moment when he slotted a nice little ball between two players giving him close attention but that was nullified by the moment when he ran at a player and passed the ball to him. A frustrating watch sums it up well.

It's 106 miles to Portman Road, we've got a full tank of gas, half a round of Port Salut, it's dark... and we're wearing blue tinted sunglasses.

Not seeing a million pound player in him yet let alone a multi multi million pound player. No real pace, no trickery, no positional awareness or clever runs to at least give the defender something different to think about. I would rather ogbene, Johnson or even young over him at the moment as literally doesn’t even look like providing anything of note each every game and any time he has got to a one on one has passed it straight to the defender or played a poor short pass and given it awa. A massive disappointment so far and think he needs some time away to be coached on what we want him to do as literally looks loft when we play.

Makes it seem an even weirder transfer when you remember we shipped out Ogbene in order to fit him into the squad. Hopefully Sindre can find his feet and nail down that starting position.

I'm struggling to think of a direct comparison but he feels very much like a Mick type player to me. Puts a shift in and does his defensive stuff but has no idea what he's doing in an attacking sense and no ability / confidence to run at or go beyond his man. I saw him a number of times before we signed him and thought he was lucky to be a squad player at Leicester. We've been absolutely done by them unless we have some reciprocal deal lined up for PSR where we sell them Harry Clarke for £10m in January!

Maybe McAteer could develop in to a right back as we're currently short of them!

Don’t bet on it!

He’s had a very serious injury and is the wrong side of 30. His game is built on pace, which might not be there at the level it was now. Time will tell but I’d be surprised if he plays that many more games for us if I’m honest.

As i said last night, if Mendel is putting in performances against top prem u21 players, then he's got to start training with the first team imo.

Going forward , so frustrating, countless times the attack broke down with him , and it got to the point where we kept going left away from his side of the pitch.

We have so many better wingers in our squad and I also include some full backs in that too Young Johnson Clarke Furlong.

However I think he played last night,to help Furlong nullify the threat of Bristol’s most creative player Mehmeti , and in that he did very well. Very like Burns would help out at the back.

Bit early to write Wes off as yet but yes a horrible injury especially at his age but others have come back from it .

Burns cost us a packet of crisps from the lower leagues, and yet his technical ability is miles ahead of McAteer. Burns can also beat his man, and has much better football intelligence.

McAteer will probably improve but even Leicester fans acknowledged how limited he is as a player. Relatively quick, hard working, but poor decision making and lacking the ability to take on defenders.

He is obviously a worker who puts a shift in and adds physical pressure on the pitch it’s just his end product at the moment is just not good enough.

Quite easy to see why he was a bit part player for Leicester. Doesn’t look good enough. Shouldn’t be starting games. Hope to be proved wrong.

The problem for Burns is that for me he’d lost a yard of pace before his latest horrendous injury. I doubt he will recapture what he had. I hope I’m wrong on that. Wes is a much better player than he looks on the box. A real handful.

I have my doubts as to whether we will see him again for us. Hopefully we will because if fit he offers something a little different and will have a role to play in a long old season.

I'm hopeful he'll improve but he was poor last night. Did the defensive stuff fairly well but as an attacking outlet it's hard to see what he brings. They were doubling and tripling up on Clarke and Davis at times and that left loads of space on the other side of the pitch but we couldn't exploit it because every time McAteer got on the ball he either ran into his man, passed it to his man, or played a simple 5 yard ball to a CM or CB and allowed Brizzle to get back into shape. I imagine he's low on confidence after a tough time at Leicester but he needs to find some mojo somehow.

Poor old Clarke had a rough time of it, constantly being fouled but to his credit didn't make a meal out of any of it.

Does he look like he adds physical pressure ? He has 0 ball retention.

He sort of works hard and that is it thus far.

Yes, there's a very obvious lack of belief about his attacking play at the moment, particularly when it comes to running with the ball. There were a couple of really good passes, one out to Clarke early on and then for the penalty.

Like a lot of players we've signed under McK, he has a lot of good attributes, just at the moment he's not showing more than the hard work off the ball. Given we've seen enough examples of players taking time to settle and grow it's definitely too early to write him off and we really need to ignore the price tag.

Grant Ward is my comparison, I think at the time we paid £500k for him which seemed a lot then...

He hadn't lost pace playing against better players in the Premiership v Chelsea at home he was superb in his role.
